Official UNC 2014 Applicants

The only reason the school board over-prepares for snow days is its track record of not canceling or releasing early and bad things happening.

I still remember 7th grade, when I was stranded at school until 8pm because too many of the buses slid on the ice trying to get home and my parents were stuck in traffic. (It was 1/8th inch of snow and the rest was freezing rain.) Rather make up a day later than risk that.

Was that the one day where traffic was like, 6 hours for a 45 minute trip? My dad is from Kansas, so we made it home since he can drive well in snow, but some of my friends were stuck in the car for the entire rest of the day (we let out late, too).

I remember when I was really little… and there was that massive ice storm and it felt like school was closed for three weeks! We had no power for about half of that time and I was nearly crushed by a huge falling branch when my mom sent me to get the paper. True story.

^ If we’re thinking of the same storm that would have been when we were in 5th grade, and it took 3 hours to make a 30 minute journey home.

Oh, and why people were making fun of the school board was because the dismissed in the middle of a Stats test, and we had to do the harder make-up test the next Monday.

@TonyBallioni: I’m sure that the percentage of Stats students in relation to the entire WCPSS population is minute, and it was a chance they were willing to take.

Hah… I actually have no idea. 5th grade sounds about right, because it was the first winter in our new house, although I thought it was around 6th grade-ish. All the ice storms sort of blend together in my mind. There were maybe three that were particularly memorable, but they all seem pretty similar and routine.

I think the other really bad one was when we were in 7th/8th? I have such a horrible memory.

Which is why I love snow but hate ice. With power in tact, you can still warm up in the house and dry your snow gear in the dryer.

Without ice, you’re SOL for a week or more.

Just to lament… We officially have 4.5" of snow here at school and… nada. I tried to tell my Lit teacher that “as a North Carolinian, I fundamentally believe that snow is God’s way of telling people to get off the roads,” but he kept everyone in class. Bah, humbug.

I don’t live in Wake County, and yeah I realize that it was a minute portion of the population, but there were a lot of people who were mad because there were multiple sporting events and other extracurriculars scheduled for the day, and all we got was rain. I understand the thinking behind the early dismissal, but the way my school board handled the situation could have been better.

Yeah, I went to private school in NC, so luckily we never had those sorts of problems. I don’t even really know how the whole school board thing works for weather delays.

Does anyone in NC remember in middle school when we had this huge hurricane threat? I think it was either 7th or 8th grade. Anyway, my county got let out of school early because of this huge threat of a horrible hurricane…and I ended up going to the park with my free time. It was sunny and like 70 degrees.

That reminds me of 2 years ago when we thought we were going to have a pretty bd hurricane. It pretty much just rained. I’ve seen worst storms on regular days lol.

I swear people in NC are so paranoid about the weather. In NY, one wouldn’t think about closing the school for rain or anything less than a foot of snow.

I live far enough inland where we don’t have to worry about hurricanes, though we do get flood days every now and again whenever it rains too much and creeks overflow, blocking the schools.

lol, I was looking on facebook at the class of 2014 for UNC and I think I see some of you on there haha. I want to join that group, but I must wait lol.

I’m not writing anything college related on my facebook until I send in the deposit slip May 1st. I looked through some of the members though, because I’m a creeper, apparently, but I didn’t see any that looked like CC’ers. Maybe I’m just bad at matching up usernames, though.

question: on MyUNC, has the “MyHousing” link always been there above the “Housing Information” link in the box that says “Student Life” ??

I’m just paranoid I’m sure, but I just wanted to make sure that didn’t mean anything!

I don’t see any box saying student life…! I just have a welcome and directory tab, and on the welcome page, there is (left to right) “Account info,” “Undergraduate Admission” “Checklist,” “Help and Support” “Visitor info” and “Event portal”

ArtemisDea: It’s the box in the middle of the page underneath the box that says “Academic Services”

Of course, I could have this because I’m a part-time student there (i’m a senior in HS and take 1 class there)

Yeah, I don’t have that box at all.

I have never had a box that says “Student Life” or “Academic Services”. Have thse always been there for you?

yes, but as i said before, i’m sure it’s just because i’m a part-time student there.
