[li] Extended essay(which topic): this is what got me in. answered the Waldo prompt but made sure to focus on MYSELF and not Waldo. this is key if you are answering this question. they probably read tons of essays that were all about Waldo and didn’t really communicate anything about the writer. *I don’t mean to sound arrogant or anything (sincerely sorry if I do) *
[/li]

[li] What would you have done differently?: nothing since I got in! :)
[/li]

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: After I was deferred from Columbia ED, I realized that God had a plan for me that required me to have other college options.
**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: I’ve read enough of these that I felt I should give something back. Congrats to those admitted, good luck to those deferred. We will all find our place. Relax, have fun, and try to enjoy the journey! **

Would anyone be kind enough to post the actual text of their deferral letter?? Wondering if they vary…

does uchicago reject anyone in early action? i haven’t seen anyone rejected so far on cc…

^^What do you think? You should be intelligent enough to answer this yourself. It is called “pride.” People who generally get rejected from Chicago for some reason don’t want to post like their peer schools…Maybe many of these individuals who apply feel “entitled” to at least be deferred??? I hope not. People please wake up…it is hard to get into Chicago. Let’s face reality. It is not the Chicago of 5 to 10 to 20 years ago.

Pretty sure they’re all the same but just in case:

Thank you for your interest in the University of Chicago. The Admissions Committee has reviewed your application, and while we are unable to offer you a place in the class at this time, we would like to review your file again in the spring.

The Committee will reconsider your application and any new information you send in the Regular Decision pool. Please arrange for your mid-year report and an updated transcript to be sent to our office as soon as they are available.

If you would like to update us on your recent accomplishments, we would be glad to review additional materials. We prefer that you submit these materials through the Portfolio in your UChicago Account. Materials must be received by February 25, 2013. Decisions will be sent by April 1, 2013, and if admitted, you will have until May 1 to reply.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu or by telephone at 773.702.8650. We hope that the University of Chicago remains high on your list and wish you the best as you continue your college search.

Subjective:[ul]
[li] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses):[/li]Peer Mentoring: I help incoming freshman trying to adjust to high school by providing assistance and advice.

QuarkNet: We work with Fermilab on experiments that utilize Cosmic Ray detectors in different scenarios. We built the detectors ourselves. We also occasionally go to Quarknet Masterclasses at Fermi.

Math Team (Leader for 2 years) I have a lot of scattered achievements for this, but the biggest one so far has been helping to lead the ENTIRE team to qualify for state in junior year (for the first time in our school’s short history).

Science Olympiad (Leader for 2 years) Main event is Astronomy. I also partook in technical problem solving, protein modeling, optics, and Fermi questions. I am currently in Astronomy, Thermodynamics, Fermi Questions, MagLev, and Circuit Lab. As a new captain last year, I brought our team from an abysmal 15th place finish to 6th at regionals (WE WON A PLAQUE!!) to clinch a spot at state over our crosstown rivals. We went on to finish 5th at State.

Scholastic/Quiz bowl (Varsity player 3 years. Captain this year.) Started off as a reserve JV player, worked my way up with lots of studying and the like. I have attended a couple of camps, and I have improved a lot. I have a ton of awards for quizbowl, ranging from 1-10th place finishes at tournaments to being the reigning conference champions with an undefeated last season.

[li] Job/Work Experience: I write quizbowl/academic competition questions for National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC. Incidentally, Ken Jennings writes some questions here too…woohoo, I am his coworker  It has been really great so far. It’s awesome to know that the questions I’m writing are played on by people of all ages all across the nation, and are helping me improve at the same time [/ul]
[/li]

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):[list]
[li] Common App Main: Wrote about how learning Chinese has had an enormous impact on my life and my educational career 8/10[/li][] EC Short Answer: Wrote about my experiences with Scholastic Bowl…too small of a space for a good essay, though 6/10
[] Extended essay(which topic): Made my own prompt. Honestly, the best essay I have ever written. It took a while but it came out perfectly 10/10
[] Optional Essay: I kind of made a gallery of my favorite artwork and novels to share with the admissions department, turned it into a PDF, and used that as my “essay.” 10/10
[] Why Chicago: I wrote a really unique math/sciencey explaination of why slacking off is very useful for college applications and why it will be useful at Chicago…I thought it worked pretty well. 9/10
[] Other:[/ul]
[] Teacher Recommendation #1: The physics teacher for whom I TA. Bound to be awesome.
[] Teacher Recommendation #2: My Chinese teacher who’s known me for four years. I don’t know if her essay-writing skills were as good as an English teacher’s, but I have full faith that she represented me as best she could. She’s the nicest lady ever.
[] Counselor Rec: Doesn’t really know me too well, but she wrote me a rec for National Merit and reused it.

Reflection[ul]

**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Congrats to everyone else who was accepted! I’m honestly elated that I got in.
Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):

Essays: (I liked most of my essays pretty well, but not sure how admissions felt!)
Common App Main: 5/10 It was the definition of meh. It’s not gonna hurt me, but not gonna help me.
Extracurricular: 10/10 math club related
Why Chicago: 6/10.
Extended: 10/10 – choose own question: Make your own course. Okay, I seriously thought I was completely toast after writing this essay because I wasn’t very creative with it. Apparently it worked out though.
Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Teacher Recommendation #1: 11/10. My AP Calc teacher loves me. I haven’t read it and will likely never get to, but I am extremely thankful to him.
Teacher Recommendation #2: IB English 11. Not sure how good it was. I asked her to do it at the last minute though, and she really saved me. Not just here, but at every last one of my universities (there’s a legitimate reason why though. Basically, I decided not to major in music, which is why I had to change teacher recs at the last minute).
Counselor Rec: Was probably unbelievable, but I won’t get a chance to read it.
Additional Info/Rec: None
Interview: Never had one.
Art Supplement: Nope.

Other

Date Submitted App: You know when hurricane Sandy hit? Well I sent my app an hour before I lost power (I’m serious).
U.S. State/Territory or Country: NY
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White

Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Nope

Reflection

Strengths: essays, recommendations, awards and extracurricular
Weaknesses: Ethnicity
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Was just a good match.
What would you have done differently?: Not been scrambling immediately before hurricane sandy to get my app sent out before I lost power.

Other Factors:

General Comments & Advice: You don’t have to write an insanely creative essay to get in. I know it’s stereotypical, but be yourself, and that’s true in general, not just for UChicago, because the fact is that you’re going to get into the right school if you just be yourself.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Honestly, to all those sophomores and juniors please do not take high school as seriously as some of my peers. School should be a time where you learn about your favorite subjects, not a time to overload on stressful, uninteresting courses. You don’t have to go to the best university, just make sure, whatever you do, you pursue your passion. If you do that then no statistics about yourself will hinder your path. I suggest watching this video, it really inspired me and I hope it does that same for you: [What If money didn’t matter?.. - Alan Watts - YouTube](<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube)
I know all that is easy to say because I was accepted to my dream school, but make sure, wherever you want to go for further education it is somewhere you can actually see yourself attending, not some school in a league of plants that is ranked really high.

[ *] Extended essay(which topic): Waldo! I actually found my app written up in the LA Times, which was bizarre. Apparently the university thought it okay to defer me while using me as an example of how quirky applicants’ essays can be. This was (I think) very well done. Maybe the most proud of a single piece of writing that I’ve ever been. I wrote about libraries being the place of hidden things (stories are hidden in books and people get lost in stories) and then connected this to Waldo being a hidden thing. I literally purchased a Waldo doll and had him hidden behind the Ralph Emerson books at the Reg. (10)

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
Uhh… so here is my weird situation that I would warn others who are looking at Uchic not to do. I applied/ showed interest as an engineering major, which I thought was ok since there seemed to be some word about an egineering program at Uchic that I remembered. Turns out that got canceled and there’s basically no such thing as engineering at this school  I have no idea how I got in… I still like this school though and I definitely advise you to apply if you’re looking for a place to learn but not for a place to get a 4.0 or name recognition from. Just if you want to do engineering apply as a physics major >.< Also to the people who are looking at US news and thinking about applying here simply because it has the same ranking as Columbia and stuff. No =.= This place is a great school. You’re going to get the same rigor as Columbia, but there is not the same kind of prestige. Don’t come here if you’re looking for prestige. Just my opinion though. Best of luck to you guys :D

uchicago has plenty of prestige if you ask me…haha
