Hey guys, I was really confused about housing so I talked to someone at admissions. Even though we have to fill out housing forms, all transfers are assigned to Stony (which is great because we’ll get to know each other very well). I’m really not sure why they give us the option. I put down my 3 choices just to be safe (I really want to live in Max!!) but it looks like we’re all going to be there together next year so I would try not to get too attached to any particular dorm. Also, Stony has doubles only within the apartments so be thorough about who you think you’d room well with because it seems we’re all going to have roommates…

Hey! I just made the group:
University of Chicago Class of 2012 Transfer Students (there’s already a 2011 group so if you’re a rising junior you can join that group).

I guess everyone knows my real name now lol. But I think it could be good to get to know each other better, and also to try to find roommates (either we choose each other, or they choose for us). I have never made a facebook group before so please anyone who wants to take it over go ahead…

Hey, I’ve been creeping this thread for a while now. I was just wondering, do you guys know anything about rescinding admissions? Like if you got 4.0s consistently but then fell to a 3.5-3.6, what would that do? I know in the transfer credits thing it says that a C- is the lowest score they’ll take for transfer, but does that impact the admissions decision at all?

It works the same way it worked senior year. If you apply with midterm grades to a school, and they accept you, and then you drop a lot between your acceptance and when they see your final grades, you can have a problem. A .5 drop is NOT a big deal, don’t worry.

I wouldn’t worry about a slight drop GordonFreeman. It would be one thing if you started getting all Ds and Fs, short of that, I wouldn’t worry about it.

btw, I know that transfers are pretty much all going to live in stony, but I was informed by the housing adviser that we ought to select 3 dorms that we would most enjoy living in, just in case there is the slightest chance that there is an opening in one of them (chances are, there will not be). From what I hear though, stony is pretty nice. Also, I am pretty sure the rooms are singles but they are set up apartment style. Meaning four people share a bathroom and kitchen, but each student get’s his or her own room… although, I may be mistaken.

Yeah, from the pictures Stony doesn’t look that bad, and apartments beat doubles and triples anyday. The only thing is, its kinda far from the main quad, like 20 minutes (?) and from what i’ve heard, it gets pretty scary after 9 or 10. So obviously the closer to the main quad the better…
Btw thanks for answering my other question, I was freaking out

no problem GordonFreeman.
Yea, thats also my issue with stony island. lets not kid ourselves, uchicago is on the south side of chicago, and although stony sialnd is in the north eastern portion of hyde park, it is still in (or at least surrounded by) an urban area that has quite a few instances of crime. Now, this doesn’t really frighten me, but it certainly makes me alert and aware of the area; that is why I would prefer to live closer to campus. Then again, this issue is easily fixed by simply traveling in groups when it gets late.

btw, I joined the facebook group. ya!!

Hey Rhode! I was told that it’s 4 people to an apartment in Stony, and that all apartments are “doubles” so 2 bedroom apartments, 2 people per bedroom (by a dean and a housing adviser). You’re right though that there is a slim chance we’ll be allowed to live somewhere else… I also talked to a transfer student who transferred in last fall (I can direct anyone’s questions to her if you’d like) who confirmed that transfers live in Stony and that (at least last year) no one had the option of living anywhere else. Given how full UChicago’s classes are it is very likely that we’re all going to be living together. The facebook group is still there… there are a few people in it but I think it could be amazing to get to know each other before the fall. I certainly am nervous to start over at a new place and knowing you all before hand would be a comfort. I also think, just to be safe, it would be good to put down roommates on our housing apps (which can’t be changed after June 1st) since Stony rooms are without a doubt doubles.

hey cookiemonster23, I also think the facebook group is an excellent idea.
After reading the description of stony island on the uchicago housing site for a second time, I see that you are indeed right that each room is a double ( which is disappointing considering that the apartments are the most expensive dorms on campus, so you would think we could at least get our own room. But at the end of the day, it’s not that big of a deal )

I guess I agree that at the end of the day it isnt that big of a deal but I wish they would just randomly disperse us into our current classes. Stony island is a bit removed from campus but I hope it won’t remove us from campus, I guess. I want to feel like a uchicago student, not like a uchicago transfer, if you know what I mean >_>. Ohhh well…and what SCAV team are we on?!

Non transfers live in Stony Island, too. Stony is for upperclassmen, too…

Scavteam: THIS is the important question. How do you choose teams?

that’s an excellent question girigiri!!
GordonFreeman, like cookiemonster23 said there are also upperclassmen that will be living in stony island, so it is not solely reserved for transfers. Also, stony is not the farthest dorm from the main campus, so we will not be isolated to the periphery (broadview is an example of a dorm that is farther from campus) and therefore I think that we will have ample opportunities to become a part of the greater campus community. One great thing about stony is that it is very close to Jackson park which, as I understand, has some beautiful scenery, this park is also located right on the bank of the Michigan river, so that should be interesting. Also the metra is very close to stony so getting into the city will be fairly easy from stony.

This might be an odd question for this discussion but I was also accepted to a few other schools, one of which is Columbia. Columbia’s deposit is due tomorrow and I didn’t think I was confused at all (was so certain I wanted to go UChicago) but I’m now having second thoughts. I guess as a transfer I’m so scared that I won’t make the right choice this time around, and I was wondering what everyone thought?

I guess it would really depend on your interests/major right? I am a physics major, probably doubling in math as well so Uchicago is definitely my top choice. But, if I were, say, a BioE or a MechE (basically any E), I would probably go with some other school. Again I guess it really depends on what you want to do with college.
…
But Uchicago has scav. Shouldn’t that settle it? :P

I’m pre-med. I’m actually from NYC so it’s exciting for me to conquer a new city. I would have a humanities major (enough science as a pre-med that I want to try something different to balance my schedule). Socially I’m a little nervous for UChicago… it has a reputation that is hard to avoid (that I think for the most part won’t be true) but I’m still so nervous about making the right choice this time.

*be a humanities major
