OFFICIAL University of Maryland Class of 2017 DECISIONS Thread

Hi, yeah I’m still waiting like you kumbavu, umd is now the only university I applied to which haven’t notified me of their decision…

Accepted for the fall back in January. 30 ACT, 3.6/4.0 GPA. Out of state. Personally I think Freshman Connection lowers the overall quality and prestige of a UMD education, since some not-as-qualified students still go. I worked very hard in high school and some people with far lower grades and test scores “can still say they go to Maryland.” Does anyone understand where I’m coming from?

emshi230, state schools usually favor SAT scores over grades, and I bet there are a lot of kids who get in for the fall at UMD with great SATs and mediocre grades and extracurriculars. And kids who get in for spring with very good grades and extracurriculars but not so great SATs. It doesn’t devalue anything.

I understand that mentality but you have to look at the people individually. I have some friends who were phenomenal in terms of grades but just couldn’t bring it test-wise or otherwise had a weak point in their application and they were given Spring Admission. This wasn’t a rejection. They were still admitted. Just not for fall. Freshman Connection isn’t for rejects. Its for people who still want to graduate on time but weren’t able to be given housing in the fall. I understand how it must seems on the surface like a depreciation of regular admits but it just isn’t the case.

@emshi230. I also have a 4.0 gpa and I am ranked 2nd in my class but I dnt agree with your argument that UMD should only be for people with extremely good grades. After all as a state school that wouldn’t be fair. It aim should be to provide higher education for all state residents who have reasonable grades.

General Comments: So excited to be going to UMD!! I’m also kinda still hoping for scholarships…

@emshi230

you elitist prat…since when does a 3.6 GPA allow you to look down your nose at anyone who is seeking an education at the same school to which you were accepted. I am sure that all those lesser beings who managed to get into UMD with lower GPA’s feel just terrible that they are dumbing down the prestige of your acceptance to the same.

According to the Common Data Set for UMD-CP for 2012, 77.6% of that year’s Freshmen class were admitted with a 3.75 GPA (on a 4.0 Scale) or higher. 11.7% were admitted with a 3.50 to 3.74 GPA. By those standards, you would be solidly in the lower 22.4% of that year’s Freshman class. Still feeling comfortable sitting high on that horse? By your thinking they should all be feeling slighted that you are dumbing down the prestige of their school experience.

@kumbavu I applied regular decision. I sent my application back in January. I am aware I received mine earlier, I am not sure why because admissions had told my mom that decisions would be release April 1 in the portal. Good luck!

I have a 3.57 GPA
SAT READING 520 MATH 800 WRITING 520
and got into engineer
I actually have no community service/awards/sports activities
I believe they look at the SAT a lot
My rank is like 125/500
Sent from my Nexus 7 using CC

Ok so…

Parents are against UMD because they think it won’t provide as good of an education as some other schools I got into. I’m leaning toward MD personally. Ways to convince them?

I mean it’s ultimately your decision. If your leaning UMD tell your parents that and why. You just have to show them your serious about it.

Does anyone know when we get our snail mail acceptance letters? I was accepted this past Thursday, but am anxious to see FA, info about registration, etc.!

idk about the actual letter, but you can actually find most of that info online!. FA can be checked on umd’s financial aid website. also, the undergrad admissions and orientation websites give detailed information about steps to take regarding accepting/declining to signing up for orientation.

I applied to U Maryland in late December. I have been logging into the portal all day, and there is nothing there. Has U Maryland released all of their decisions yet? When are they going to? Should I just expect to hear by snail mail?

It’ll be available through your application before they send it. Decision Status should be visible under the submission status on the main menu. If its not there patience. I’m sure it’ll be up soon.

It would help to know
-what is your major
-what are your parents’ specific concerns/objections
-what are the other schools that you got into which your parents prefer
-what are the reasons you are leaning toward Maryland

I’m currently deciding between UMD and Lehigh, both of which are comprable in cost and (to me) quality of education in my major (ECE).
I just have a few questions regarding the school to help my decision along:

 1. How many classes are taught by professors vs. TAs?
 2. How is the general demeanor of the professors in ECE?
 3. If I’m in an honors program (ACES), do I get access to small classes of, say English 101 or something like that?

I just haven’t looked into that stuff too much yet, so I’m curious.

3) Yes you get H classes. English 101H is included. maryversity will probably give you all the details on that as well as your other questions. She’s been on a roll as long as I’ve been here. :)

Thanks for all the responses. I really appreciate all the help

@maryversity
Unknown major
Other schools that they are pulling for are BC and Wellesley
They think it is a) too big and b) not as good of a school in general as the other I was accepted to
I am in the Honors program though, so that is an added bonus
I’m also in-state
