Senior Year Course Load: APs (chem, psych, lit, stats) calc, government, consumer ed, Debate/forensics
Number of other ED applicants in your school: 0
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): Debate State 4th place, and I guess maybe two-time national forensic league All-American
Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): National Honor Society</p>

<p>Subjective:
Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description):
FBLA (Chapter prez two years)
Class President (soph-senior)
German Club: President, plus some state-recognized speaking awards
National Honor Society (Chapter president)
Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout)
Debate (literally spend 5hrs/night there)
Job/Work Experience:
Volunteer/Community Service:Boy Scouts and NHS = 200+ hr
Summer Experience: 3 wk debate camps, Boy Scout trips, boys state
Teacher Recommendation #1: Didn’t see any of them, but Awesome! from my debate coach!
Teacher Recommendation #2: from my German teacher who really likes me, so I bet it was also very good.
Counselor Rec: Probably pretty good, but probably not great. I don’t really know.
Additional Info/Rec: n/a
Interview: not contacted</p>

<p>Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Why Penn: (8/10) About the UG mgmt consulting club. I thought it made a pretty good argument.
Ben Franklin Quote Essay: (6.5) Quirky. That’s it, really. I thought they would either like it or hate it. I wrote about a 4th grade kickball tournament, and how I showed leadership.
CommonApp Personal Statement: (8.5) Probably the most well-written of the four, which is good now I guess, since it goes everywhere else I’ll be applying.
CommonApp Activity Essay: (7) wrote about debate, and I thought it was pretty good, except I originally wrote it thinking the limit was 1000 words, not characters  so I had to cut a bunch of stuff.</p>

<p>Other
Date Submitted App: 11/5
U.S. State/Territory or Country: KS
School Type: Public, ultranon-competitive–last person to go to an ivy league school was 7 years ago (cornell)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket Range: I don’t know, but probably 250+
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): None. maybe location: 2nd poorest county in a pretty mediocre state. Also, my schools avg ACT scores are below the national and state averages. Don’t know if that helps or hurts.</p>

<p>Reflection
Strengths: Leadership, GPA (they probably saw straight through this though.) SAT writing
Weaknesses: Math scores!! they were bad by Wharton standards. I also may have overstated my essays above, I wrote them one month before, so I just don’t know.
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: KU honors, Minn-Twin Cities Honors, UT-Dallas—all my safeties
What would you have done differently?: The “I should’ves”: I should have articulated my leadership and extracurriculars better and explained how they pertained to business–I didn’t sell myself well enough. I should have spent more time on my essays. I should have started studying for the SAT sooner. I’m just kind of bitter about the school that I go to (not placing blame obviously) but I wish I would have known everything I needed to do to be competitive way earlier. I know I had the motivation. GFD. I know it’s all basically a crapshoot, but I still feel bad. The EC articulation was completely my fault; I should have known better, especially since it was supposed to be a strong part of my app. A sophomore girl in my school just scored a 211 on the psat (don’t know when the last time a soph from my school scored over a 200) and I won’t let her down. Also, winter break just got busier :(</p>

<p>Reflection
Strengths: I’ve got good grades but I also have sports and activities - well rounded.
Weaknesses: Probably still my test scores because even though they’re good, they’re not the best.
Why you think you were deferred: Test scores
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted to all three of my other schools - Pitt, Duquesne, and Bloomsburg… very different from Penn. Penn was my only Ivy.</p>

<p>General Comments: I’ve kind of accepted the fact that out of the 1,000 people that were deferred, less than 100 are going to be accepted, and I don’t believe I will be one of them. It sounds crazy to go in such a different direction, but I’m 90% certain I’m just going to go ahead and commit to Bloomsburg. It’s got a good Speech-Language Pathology program, and it’s a nice campus. It’s not my mom’s alma mater, it’s not nearly as close to home, it’s not an Ivy, and it’s not Penn. But I’m okay with it.</p>

<p>“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”</p>

<p>(I know this is an AA prayer but I’m Catholic & I like it ahah. Congrats to all those accepted, good luck to all those deferred, and to all those rejected, don’t worry. You are smart and you are able, and you’ll get into the school that’s best for you.)</p>
