Reflection
I think that my strengths were my grades and scores in all honesty. Some people might say they are too low, but I think that they are solid. I have taken the hardest courses to offer at my school and show commitment to rigor. I speak three languages fluently and have duel citizenship which could help I guess? Weaknesses are not being diverse, not having a real hook ( legacy/connections), and not having a lot of leadership positions.

I’m disappointed, but I expected it. I feel as though everyone needs a hook whether it be legacy, ethnicity, athletics ,or anything of that matter to be considered. I feel like my fate was sealed from the start.

So to any of you white jewish girls like me trying to get into Penn, I wish you the best but don’t get your hopes up.

I cannot give an honest evaluation since I have no point of reference; I am a strong writer, and was told that my essays were also strong. However, I am unhooked, so I am led to belief that my essays were indeed strong since I was accepted.

• Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: None yet. It’s going to be quite a wait.
• What would you have done differently?: Been more specific. Lived in another state.

I am an interesting person, I swear. I am bummed, but I wouldn’t want to be there if they don’t want me. For those of you that are rejected like me, don’t take it personally. It’s not about where you go. Congrats to those of you that got in. Make the most of it.

Other Factors:

Just thought I would step in here because I know some of you could use it. First off, congratulations to those accepted! Last year, I applied ED to Penn and learned on this day that I was deferred, and later rejected. I was absolutely devastated, as I am sure a great many of you are right now. I remember just how difficult it was to look at this thread. In fact, that day marked my last day on this forum, until the round of RD decisions. To those of you deferred, I advise you to move on. Seriously. Take it from someone who was very well-qualified, as all of you are, and who spent weeks writing many letters all in order to prove my dedication to Penn. None of that worked in the end. The process is very random and there is simply no special formula. To those rejected and deferred, you will achieve great things wherever you go! I know all of the feelings you are experiencing now, and I know how many times you will hear this phrase, but it is true. Months from now, even though the decision still may not make sense to you, you will have come to terms with it. It takes time, but it also takes an experience like this to make you realize that life is so much more than a college decision. You may even feel relieved, having been disengaged from this ivy-league-figure that you have had to live up to until now. You will finally be able to discover your true passions, outside of those created from the robot that was made of you throughout this process. Trust me, it feels good. You may find comfort in knowing that you have another shot of getting into Penn, or into the ivy league, once RD decisions come around, but a great deal of you will experience this same disappointment. In fact, this is exactly what happened to me. Even though my dreams of making into these schools were crushed, I was left to choose from a good amount of other top schools, all without that ivy label. Within them, I found my perfect fit, and I know all of you will too! Best of luck to you all!

Teacher Recommendation #1: super strong! i was very happy with it
Teacher Recommendation #2: I didn’t get a chance to read it. I’m assuming it was ok? the teacher and i were pretty close.
Counselor Rec: decent. eh  we really didn’t know each other too well.
Additional Info/Rec: sibling hook? my sister goes there, but that wasn’t something i mentioned AT ALL in any of my essays or extra info stuff. i wanted to get in by my own merits!
Interview: very informal, but went very well! we mostly talked about stuff i already included in my application such as my hobbies, favorite classes, what i do during my free time, etc. we didn’t talk about sat scores or rankings at all, which i loved! it was solely about what i loved to do as a regular 18 year old :)

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Why Penn: ehh~ wasn’t anything too exciting. (5) i mentioned specific clubs i would participate in, but overall, it was vague.

Any dual-degree program essays: N/A
CommonApp Personal Statement: 9 i spent a fair amount of time on this, and i’m extremely pleased with how it turned out! i talked about how when my sister went to college, i had the opportunity to reconnect with my mom, and because of this, i’ve been able to see life through a whole new angle.
CommonApp Activity Essay: 9 i was careful to do more than just state what i did for my “activity”. i talked about how i started skating, why i loved it, and how i am affected when i teach young skaters. I had a lot of fun with this! :)

Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): sibling legacy? but again, i didn’t mention that anywhere in my essays or additional info.

Reflection
Strengths: my common app essays. they were strong! also, my academics i suppose?
Weaknesses: my “why penn” essay and my counselor’s Letter of rec. also, no major awards. i didn’t earn any national or international awards other than the “ap national scholar”
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: none. penn was the first school i heard from!
What would you have done differently?: i wouldn’t have gotten a ‘B’ way back as an 8th grader, but hey, what’s passed has passed, and it helped me realize i need to really concentrate on school if i want to achieve my dreams! also, i would have entered more math and science national competitions. i didn’t really have any national/international awards.

Side note: congratulations to everyone who applied regardless of the outcome! it’s been a long journey, and we should all be super proud of ourselves! remember everything happens for a reason! if you didn’t get into penn today, it may be because you have greater things waiting for you in april and may. never lose hope! we’ve already come so far, and the battle has only just begun! show em what youre made of! :)

@sheepherder- no way, I also did panel! What year were you? I was rejected from Wharton as well, was going to say how I completely I agree wih you about your “if they didn’t want me, it wasn’t for me” statement.

And @youllbeok, thank you for your reassuring words  it still hurts a bit right now, but I do believe that I was rejected because there is another school even better for me. A big and hearty congratulations to those who got in, and for those who didn’t, you (and i) will still achieve great things.

[] Additional Rec: from the boss at my intern. i love her shes so funny and nice and when shes free, she always talks to me. i have very good relationships with the rest of the scientists at the lab, and she knows that.
[] Interview: i was pretty nervous, but my interviewer really understood where i was coming from. i asked him some questions and he gave me a lot of really good advice. he said we’d only talk for about half an hour but we ended up talking for more than an hour. good sign i hope

[] Why you think you were deferred: i think it might be that my essays dont grab their attention? and my extracurrics realy do describe me and my interests, but they arent very STRONG i guess… my counselor was pretty surprised that i was deferred… maybe its cuz theres too much competition for international school students or ionno female asians?
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: dunno yettt
General Comments: well i was pretty disappointed when i saw the letter, but it wasnt that bad because i think i wouldve been more upset if i was rejected. in a positive light, this opens me to other options. hope for the best ^~^

Strengths: Extracurrilars, really business engaged. the fact that I took Harvard classes in finance showed my passion for business, and also demosntrated that I could succed in ivy leagues since I got A’s
Weaknesses: test scores? International asking for full aid and Penn is NOT need blind for international
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: no where yet
What would you have done differently?: nothing

Other Factors: one advice: IF YOU ARE AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT, NOT US CITIZEN, AND WANT CLOSE TO OR FULL FINANCIAL AID, DO NOT APPLY EARLY DECISION TO PENN OR ANOTHER SCHOOL THAT IS NOT NEED BLIND FOR INTERNATIONALS. :)

Ben Franklin Quote Essay: 8? I dont know it was well written and specific
Any dual-degree program essays: None but I had to submit an art portfolio for SAAST
CommonApp Personal Statement: I think at least and 8 or 9. It was unique and I feel like my sense of humor came through.
CommonApp Activity Essay: eh, ok I guess? I wrote a brief statement about my volunteer work.

School Type: Public, but one of the best public schools in the area/country
Ethnicity: White

Income Bracket Range: Upper
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): legacy

Reflection
Strengths: My art portfolio (very important for the program I applied to), my AP scores, my essays, my letters of recommendation (BIG time), my grades
Weaknesses: I guess my ACT score could have been better. Honestly, the only bad part of that was my science score. No school really cares about that.
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: N/A
What would you have done differently?: Nothing :)

Other Factors: My experience at SAAST is what got me interested in Penn. (I got a solid A at the course there and I am convinced that my letter of recommendation from my professor played a big role in helping me get in). I wanted Penn for a specific program unique to their school alone. I wasn’t an ivy chaser. My passion for that program really showed in my essays. I did a lot to make myself stand out (independent art portfolio, experience at SAAST) and show how passionate I was for Penn.
