[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): student council (secretary, program director), MUN (president, best delegate, assistant director), orchestra (principal violist), debate team (team captain, Best Debater Award), Prom Committee (Head of Programs Department), school TV station
[] Job/Work Experience: summer tutoring
[] Volunteer/Community service: started a branch of community service at our school
[] Summer Activities: EPGY (summer ‘09)
[] Essays: personal statement about MUN; supplement essay kinda generic; did the optional one; the huntsman one was about US-China trade/currency issues
[] Teacher Recommendation: english teacher & econ teacher (who is also debate team faculty advisor) - should both be pretty great
[] Counselor Rec: great
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: went for 30min, but that seems to be pretty short compared to my peers’. the interviewer also never said anything like ‘ur a great match’, etc. it was amiable, but i wouldn’t consider it stellar [/ul]
Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant): studying in China (US citizen)
[] School Type: int’l school
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: qualify for fin aid
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none…[/ul]
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: pretty numbers, great recs, dedicated to ECs, penn is beginning to like our school
[] Weaknesses: ECs seem pretty commonplace, not many significant summer activities
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: rejected from Huntsman (as expected) because target language (Chinese) is way too competitive - should’ve taken another language outside of school, and also because i’m good but not the best; accepted into CAS because top of my class and our students have had a good record at Penn
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: no idea, sent app to USC, UCLA, and paid the app fee for Georgetown already - gotta withdraw soon![/ul][/li]General Comments:
hasn’t quite sunk in yet. i feel some parts of my app could’ve been better. but oh well! everything turned out okay

for the people who got deferred or rejected - keep up the faith. i believe that if penn doesn’t happen to you, then theres something better out there for you. and remember, if you were rejected, it makes no sense to stubbornly undyingly love it - you’re still amazing. :)

General Comments:
I have dreamed of going to Penn since 8th grade!! This feels so surreal.
Congratulations to all my fellow classmates, and my deepest condolences to those who did not receive good news. You all are rockstars in my book.

I just realized something quite silly that I did.

Long story, short:
I created my template about myself the night before decisions, and expected to get rejected. Thus, I filled out the whole thing as though I was getting rejected. So when I got accepted, I only filled changed “rejected” to “accepted” and never fixed any of the other brooding at the bottom.

Thus, to most people that probably looked and sounded so confusing. Here’s my revised version:

Decision: Accepted

Why Penn?: A little bland, but very passionate.
Common App Activities: Again, very passionate, about my advisory role on the Board of Ed.
[] Optional Essay?: Yes, loved it. It was my favorite essay to write. I wrote it in poetry form about all of my quirks and obsession with being meticulous.
[] Teacher Recs: My math teacher loves me, and I’m sure it was phenomenal.
Spanish Teacher: Ditto to above, although didn’t read. She’s a wonderful writer, and thinks highly of me, so I’m sure it was fantastic.
[] Counselor Rec: Was pretty generic, but called me a “treasure” and said I was always a pleasure to have around.
[] Supplemental Rec(s)?: My school principal wrote me a supplemental rec. it was absolutely fantastic, and made me cry. She made me sound perfect.
[] Hook (if any): None!
[] Interview?: Yes, about a month ago. I felt it went very well. There were never awkward silences, and I thoroughly connected with my interviewer. Went for almost 1.5 hours.

[/ul]Other Factors (weaknesses, strengths, etc.):

General Comments/Congratulations/etc:
I’m beyond euphoric and excited. Although it hasn’t quite set in really, I am the happiest I’ve ever been in my entire life. Best of luck to everyone, and I am excited to see my fellow 2016 Quakers in April.

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2270 (780 math/ 700 reading/ 790 writing)
ACT: 32
SAT II: 800 math, 710 Biology M, 700 English
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 5.00 weighted; Unweighted: 4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 1-5%
AP (place score in parenthesis): US History (4); Biology (4); English (5); Calculus BC (4); Calculus BC Subscore (4)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none really

Job/Work Experience: Research Internship
Volunteer/Community service: Hospital Volunteering, Cancer Center Volunteering, Fox Chase Cancer Center Volunteering, Science Olympiad Captain, Newspaper chief editor, ASAP- student founded club, Sunday school teacher, Debate captain, etc.
Essays: Pretty good. My common app one was really unique, my supplemental essay had a typo in it and was pretty bland and my short essays were both pretty good. I wrote my first one about Debate and the other about why I love physics.
Recommendation: I had 4 recs: one counselor, one from the doctor who ran my internship and two teachers. The counselor rec was really good and so was the one from the doctor and my teacher recommendations were pretty plain.
Interview: I thought my interview was disastrous because my interviewer asked me a total of three questions in 50 minutes, but he called my house to tell me that I was the best so I guess not?

General Comments:
SOOOO excited!

@loldanielol
I know, I also applied early and got accepted,
but some people already seem to know to what other schools they have been accepted… Like cuteycat02 for example…

^ shakalaka, those other schools to which people have been accepted are schools with rolling (decisions rendered shortly after applications are submitted)–or, in some cases, nonrestrictive early–admissions programs.

^^ Oh, now that explains a lot! Haven’t seen any of those at any of the schools where I was going to apply if Penn didn’t want me…
Thanks 45Percenter! :)

^ You’re welcome! Many of the public universities and colleges in the US (and some of the private schools) have rolling admissions.

ED schools allow you to apply anywhere else as long as it is not REA. The REA restricts you to apply ED to any other school. ED schools just require you to withdraw your applications everywhere if you are admitted early. So someone could have applied to Penn, Chicago, MIT, Caltech, NotreDame at the sametime if they wanted.

[size=+2]Decision: Accepted/size

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2230 (800 math, 800 reading and 630 writing)
SAT II: 800 math II and 800 chemistry
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 98/100 (I graduated in June,2011).
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/216
AP (place score in parenthesis): ): N/A. I went to a government school in the Middle East, so I only heard of the AP exams very recently
Senior Year Course Load: Historical and Structural Geology, General Chemistry 3, Biology: “Anatomy, Physiology and Genetics”, Calculus, English as a Second Language, Arabic Literature and Composition 3, Electricity and Magnetism, Islamic Studies 3 (all of them are yearlong courses)
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): International Mathematical Olympiad participant, 3rd on nationwide math Olympiad, 1st in nationwide chemistry Olympiad, 3rd in Emirates Young Scientists Awards and other little achievements

Subjective:
Extracurriculars: practiced a martial art for 8 years (I’m a brown belt. Never got black because my instructor is ruthless), forensic program at school, tutored peers for TOEFL, an unbelievable number of Olympiads (because I was afraid that admissions officers would think that I’m a science student, I only mentioned math and chemistry. I did very well in geology too- got 7th nationwide)
Job/Work Experience: 3 month full time internship in my state’s (well not really a state) government office
Volunteer/Community service: : I didn’t do this yet, but I did state, as part of my gap year plan, that I would volunteer at a local school
Summer Activities: Olympiad training hell- both for math and chemistry. English/IT Program in Canada
Essays: spent over 40 hours on them
Teacher Recommendation: one was awesome; the other was nice, but its English was…bad. I guess the gibberish language made the letter authentic
Counselor Rec: my school doesn’t even have a counselor, so my vice principle wrote one. I never saw it, but I’d say it wasn’t very good- the man wasn’t interested in extra work
Additional Rec: 2 superb letters
Interview: Good

Other
Country: UAE
School Type: Middle Eastern government school
Ethnicity: Arab/ White
Gender: Male
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): brother is a Wharton alumnus, I’m a fully funded student by my country’s presidential scholarship office, one of the very few Gulf Arab applicants, chose Arabic as my target language.

Reflection
Weaknesses: fit issues ( I think I mollified them through very strong essays), SAT writing is not too impressive.
Why you think you were accepted: I played the game strategically+ tremendous support from family and friends (these guys rock).
General Comments: Dear prospective Huntsman applicants, don’t be afraid to choose your native as your target language if it is underrepresented- such as Arabic, Korean and Japanese (to a lesser extent). It won’t harm you as much as you think, and it is better than facing fierce competition in the overrepresented pools- Mandarin, Spanish and French.

@Lambda UPenn takes the ACT w/Writing OR the SAT and 2 Subject Tests. Since I submitted the ACT, I didn’t have to take the subject tests. And I know the ACT score isn’t that high, but it’s in the middle 50% and I’m sure my transcript more than made up for it.

@ Cardgames
Impressive stats.
You don’t speak Arabic yet?
Haha, don’t worry about the SAT Writing, apparently they don’t mind so much if you’re not from an English speaking country. I also only had 640… blush

Does anyone know if there’s any way to print out our decision letter from the website? Or do they send you one via snail mail eventually?

Thanks guys!

^ Hard copies of acceptance letters were sent out this past Friday (same day decisions were released online). They’re the same as the online version, except they have a raised Penn seal at the top instead of the photo of the Ben Franklin statue in front of College Hall.

I don’t know whether hard copies of deferral and rejection letters were also sent out by snail mail.

After looking through all of the acceptances/deferrals, I’m not exactly sure why I was deferred (you guys can see my post on the second page). I spent months working on my application, and apart from a minor spelling mistake on my essay and minor errors on my activities sheet, I thought everything was fine. Oh well, I will find out in March/April. But I would really love to be done with high school right now.
