[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: dont really know, maybe little leadership? Also an admissions rep called me and asked about my reasoning for wanting to go to med school with an EE degree; I feel like I gave good answers like my interest in physics and calc, but the fact that I was called about that made me feel like I shoulve talked about my declared major more
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: drexel, havent done any other supplements yet

[/ul]General Comments: At least I can still say that I have some hope left for an admission in spring

Tally

52/84 Accepted - 14 Deferred - 62% Acceptance Rate

To those deferred: About 300 less applicants were deferred, and about 50 less accepted. This means that the acceptance rate for deferred applicants will likely go up. Best of luck when RD comes around!

Objective

[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2160 (CR-660, W-710, M-790)
[] SAT II: Math II-800, Physics-700
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.071

[] AP (place score in parenthesis): World History(4), Calculus BC(5), Physics C:Mechanics(4), Physics C:Electricity and Magnetism(4)
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Chemistry

[] Volunteer/Community service: Public library and animal shelter over the summers.
[] Summer Activities: Calculus 3 at the local college over summer break.
[] Essays: Talked about my research in alternative energies and my interest in math and science. On the why Penn essay I tried to get across how much I loved the actual school and campus.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One from my calculus teacher and the other from my physics teacher. Both teachers made it a point to get to know me and make the essays really personal.
[] Counselor Rec: Average counselor template probably.
[] Additional Rec: One from my mentors at the lab which emphasized my interest in the research.
[] Interview: Went extremely well. My interviewer was more like a friend by the end of the interview. (To be honest though I think every interview goes well)[/ul]
Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): New Mexico
[]School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: >150,000[/ul]
Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Experience in research from my lab internship.
[] Weaknesses: SAT score was average for Penn. Few AP classes and few extra curriculars.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Do what you love and love what you do (corny I know). Apply to a school, or program because you are genuinely interested in it, not because of its name. Then proving why you want to go there is easy.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I only applied to Penn.[/ul]
**General Comments: For anyone who is planning on applying to VIPER, try and take as many math and science classes as you can. Also try to get an internship in research because I really think it made all of the difference.

Anyone who’s already been accepted to VIPER, message me! I want to meet you! :)**

@ shakalaka
I know Arabic (native) and English (also native), and I’m learning a third language: Mandarin ( currently an advanced beginner). I targeted Arabic because I knew it was an underrepresented language at the Huntsman Program, and because I’m not that good at Mandarin (I hope to reach intermediate when I matriculate).

I agree with you on the SAT writing point. Ironically, I believe that my 630 writing score helped me more than my 800 in chemistry. The writing score showed that I’m not an obsessive test-taker (I could just boost it through a retake), but the chemistry score made me seem like a science nerd (well… I used to be a super science nerd).

@ Cardgames
Oh, so that’s how it is!
I will prob study Mandarin. I’m half Chinese, but don’t speak it… -.-

Yes, that’s prob true. You only took it once?
I took it a second time last week. I wasn’t expecting Penn to take me… :p

@dfree124
How do you know that less people are accepted and more deferred?
Have the stats been published already?

General Comments:

Can’t wait to get to Philly!

Decision: Deferred

Stats:[ul]
[] School applied to: SEAS (Digital Media Design)
[] ACT: 34(English), 30(Math), 32(Reading), 27(Science), 30(Composite), 31(Super scored)
[] GPA weighted: My school says they only report 4.0 weighted…which makes no sense since I have a 4.0 or like 3.97 unweighted.
[] GPA unweighted: Like a 4.0
[li] Rank or % estimate: 4/165
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I think my essay was good. Common App was about a Physics video I made using special effects programs in my junior year. My supplement essay was about how Penn’s DMD program is so unique.
[] Optional Essay?(Y/N): Wrote the optional essay about my parents and how I have learned from them. I also thought that turned out well.
[] Teacher Recs: I asked my Calculus teacher and Physics teacher for recommendations. This is my second year having them both, so I’m pretty sure the recommendations came out well.
[] Counselor Rec: My guidance counselor has been very helpful to me throughout my years in high school, so I also believe this was good.
[] Hook (if any): Nope
[] Interview?: Not really sure…thought it went fairly well.

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: New Jersey
[] School Type: Public…very small school
[] Ethnicity: Hispanic
[] Gender: Male
[] Financial Aid?(Y/N): No
[] Legacy Yes/No: No
[] Recruited Yes/No: No
[] Important ECs: Taekwondo is my most important (Junior Instructor, Judge, Referee, Coach, Black Belt, Performed in demonstrations, attended Junior Olympics and fought against student coached by Jean Lopez lol), Interact Community Service Club (Began video/board game drive for the Valerie Fund Center at Monmouth Medical Center), Hospital Volunteer (Volunteered in the hospital every summer, Sometimes I got to teach new volunteers), Piano (Playing since second grade, perform at biyearly recitals), X Factor Martial Arts Club (Founding Member). Also, I tried to make it clear in my common app essay that I have taught myself to use programs like adobe after effects and 3ds max since my school doesn’t have any classes that teach this, and all the classes that taught similar things were to simple.
[li] Awards: National Hispanic Scholar, Dwight D. Eisenhower Leadership Award
[/li]

[/ul]Other Factors (weaknesses, strengths, etc.):
Looking back on everything, I didn’t have a 3000 SAT score and I didn’t cure cancer. Besides those two weaknesses, I felt like I was a fairly strong applicant, and I am very passionate about the Digital Media Design Program at Penn. I found out about the DMD program only a couple of weeks before I decided to apply ED. I didn’t have much time to submit a portfolio, so I sent them a link of a video I made for my physics class junior year on youtube. In addition, I also made an extra short special effects video to send. I never got a reply from them as to whether or not they received the email.

General Comments/Congratulations/etc:
Well, only like 800 people got deferred, so I’m happy about that, and apparently they are going to try to accept more deferred students than in previous years. Congrats to everyone that got in, and sorry I posted so late.

@lambda-no clue actually!
