****OFFICIAL University of Pennsyvlania CLASS OF 2019 ED Applicants Discussion Thread****

@Peezus. How modest of you.

Does anyone else think that the listing of grades and scores on CC is a waste of time? In the words of the UPenn college representative who visited my school, “we look for what you love, how much you’ve achieved in what you love, and how what you love will enrich Penn.”

Almost anyone, with enough time and effort, can be that 4.0/2350 student. But how many high schoolers can win international competitions, create a successful non-profit, be exceptional in their sport/art, and bring something truly special to Penn? It really comes down to personal qualities, passion, and who you are as a human being. No GPA or test score can put a stamp on human potential.

In an effort to change up the crazy and paranoid atmosphere of this thread… let’s list the single weirdest movie each of us has ever seen. I’m gonna say that “There Will Be Blood” starring Daniel Day-Lewis was the most awkward film I’ve seen.

Teeth… no doubt… scarring movie

Just my thoughts on admissions regarding things like sat, act, and gpa… I agree with most people. I’ve spoken to one of my friends whose relative used to be an admissions officer at rice. She couldn’t tell me the details because they aren’t supposed to but she told me that applications are roughly divided into two piles like the admitted group and the rejected group based off of numbers. You then either go up or down from your initial group based upon things such as essays, interviews, recommendations, etc. I would estimate that for the College of Arts and Sciences a relatively loose threshold would be around a 3.9 GPA and a 2150 SAT. If you have a 4.0 GPA and a 2100 your pretty good. If you have a 3.85 and a 2200 your still probably pretty good.

And if you have a 3.6 GPA and you have a 2000 SAT but you are some sort of robotics champion or something your probably still pretty good. If you have a 3.7 GPA and a 1900 SAT but you have double legacy and your dad donates tens of thousands a year your still pretty good. Just kind of spewing random combinations. Nothing is clearcut. That is obvious. I think just to give everyone reassurance… No matter your scores you can get in. No matter anything you can get in. I think the most important thing and what will give you the biggest advantage is if you have a combination of strengths which outweigh your weaknesses.

literally so nervous for monday! how many other people are applying to CAS? I feel like most ED applicants apply to Wharton… I’m hoping the legacy advantage will work for me!

I’m really curious what percentage of people who are applying ED to UPenn actually view this website.

I personally applied to Wharton.

2260/3.8 GPA applying to CAS for International Relations. I am so scared about my GPA :(

@HvePassion I wouldn’t be worried about your GPA at all! You’re definitely in the ballpark, and that’s really all that matters. How are your ECs?

@iamarower‌ I am the Secretariat for three national and international MUN conferences with over 600 participants. I was recruited to help a famous women’s right advocate research and write a book. I am on my city’s youth council and am in the process of organizing a city-sponsored conference. I am the co founder of a registered non profit that focuses on setting up inner-city tutoring programs. I am the elected Premier of my regional youth parliament and am a youth representative of a federal political party. A lot of debate, speech awards. I am a public speaker for an international women’s right organization and founded a local branch. I also founded a girls rights conference and volunteer at a rape relief shelter.

I am really really hoping that my extracurriculars make up for my GPA. I also self studied five AP courses and got fives on them all…so hopefully that’lol show that I’m academically competent.

@HvePassion tbh I would not worry too much… I mean, I’m not an admissions counselor or anything, but you definitely have substance to your application. Grades aren’t everything, but a 2260 and 3.8 isn’t shabby at all. I would say you have an upper hand on many applicants. Only time will tell though… good luck!

@iamarower‌ thanks! I am sure you’ll do great too. And plus you have an upper hand with legacy and everything!!

@HvePassion haha I hope so… I’m in a similar boat as you… my grades aren’t incredibly strong (95 GPA, 33 ACT) but I’m hoping other things will make up for it! :)

@HvePassion is your GPA weighted or unweighted?

@iamarower‌ A 95 GPA and 33 ACT is definitely very strong. Mine is unweighted. Our school doesn’t calculate GPA/rank and we don’t have AP/IB. I’m Canadian.

I say we try to discourage “Chance?” and “GPA SAT?” posts. who agrees?

@HvePassion‌ are Canadians considered internationals?

@indorilnerevar‌ Well, we are technically internationals, but admissions is need blind for us and Mexicans.

I need a new hobby for the next week…so nervous about decisions :|

so, it is released on monday, dec 8?
