****OFFICIAL University of Pennsyvlania CLASS OF 2019 ED Applicants Discussion Thread****

Penn has all my son’s scores, but he listed his highest scores on the CA. Listing scores is optional, so he only listed the ones they say they are going to consider.

Hi everyone,
I’m applying to Penn ED with a heavy interest in studying history and political science. I’m trying to figure out a way to write my essay without being corny. Is anyone else interested in majoring in history? If so, what suggestions do you have for the essay? I don’t want to spend 650 words talking about how history can serve as a predictor of the future or how it allows us to better understand human interaction or any of that corny stuff that admissions officers must read a billion times. Should I use personal narrative in this essay or just keep it analytical?

Done. I applied ED to SEAS. Now I can only wait…

Applied ED to wharton. Good luck everyone

I’m applying ED to Wharton with a 3.6 UW GPA, 31 ACT, and letter of rec. from Wharton Alumna. Countless hours of volunteering with biotech work, President and founder of FBLA chapter at my school, 2 captain positions of varsity sports, 2 jobs. In 6 AP Classes this year (Bio Chem Lit Spanish Econ Calc AB) and have taken AP Stats. Also, I have visited multiple times and founds key details about the school and put them in my sup. essay and many teachers said it was amazing.

Do any of you guys think I have a chance…? Everyone keeps telling me they “know” I will get in but I feel like my GPA is a huge downfall. I had trouble freshman and sophomore year because of my parents divorce but I then I received a 4.0 junior year so it’s kind of a uprising trend.

Lemme know!

hey justinn76 !! don’t worry I know how you feel (my grades were great 9th and 10th grade but I got a B in ap cal and now senior year is just a struggle) but Im sure that you have a good chance! Your grades are improving which is a great sign for colleges and it seems like that you are involved with meaningful activities- definitely explain about parent’s divorce
Otherwise good luck! a 4.0 junior year is also impressing!!

@NewportHSSenior‌ I have an A- in AP Calc and its my only non-A and it’s killing me haha

haha @justinn76 i had a B+ in cal and its my only b and its bothering me! im scared that the admissions counselors will see that as bad
but you don’t need to worry about that A- ! That’s already close enough to an A and better than a lot of people!

I know this is just a silly technicality, but should we refer to the College of Arts and Sciences as CAS or SAS? I’ve seen people use both and I don’t want to make a fool of myself on the essay using the wrong one.

CAS is CAS. Don’t call it SAS.

People can be wrong. Penn itself is right: http://www.college.upenn.edu/</a></p>

SEAS is engineering.

is a 31 act score going to cut it??

@izzypraun‌ I have the same question… at my school the average is about a 21 and my 31 is a complete outlier… but at Penn I feel like it won’t be enough’

Hello All! I’m looking to be chanced for ED to CAS (in particular, a Political Science major). (So sorry about the lengthy formatting!)

I was originally intending to go to a local state school (SDSU, USD, UMN, or Wayne State College) and had my mind set on being at one of those four (except for the University of Alabama, that was my wildcard college), until a bit of “soul-searching” this past month. This leaves me with a course load configured for easy transition into my local state school, but not necessarily an Ivy League school like UPenn. That being said, Chance me please!

ACT (breakdown): 32 Composite. History: 32 (W:10), 32, 27 (early Sophomore year)
Best of Each: 29 Math, 33 English, 33 Reading, 33 Science, 10 Writing

No SAT nor SAT Subject (Not a common test around here. If I had know I’d be looking at UPenn/Ivy League, I’d have taken it.)

Unweighted GPA (out of 4): 3.76
Weighted GPA: 3.9 (Guess) Will be a 3.96 at graduation if I get all A’s in my dual credit courses)

Rank: 27/76 (Its going to sound like an excuse, but I have an extremely competitive class. There are more than 34 students taking AP English and a similar amount in NHS.) Projected at 23/76 if weighted graduation GPA is 3.96.

AP/IB: Took AP Economics, did not take test due to track meet on the same day. I intended to CLEP it if the school I’d be attending would accept the credit. There are not a lot of AP courses offered at my high school, but instead Dual Credit courses.

Senior Year Course Load: News Media III (Journalism for Third Year Participants), Band (Marching, Concert, Pep), Psychology , Sociology, Constitutional Government (Government class that partakes in “We The People.”), Dual Credit Psychology 101, Dual Credit College Algebra, Dual Credit Composition 101, Dual Credit Intro to Statistics, Dual Credit American Government, Dual Credit Intro to Literature.

Number of other ED applicants in your school: 0 (I’m probably the first UPenn ED applicant ever from my school. One Harvard applicant (RD) last year)

Major Awards: Eagle Scout, Council Venturing Leadership Award, Boys State (Party Chairman), Vigil Honor (Order of the Arrow)

Common Awards: National Honor Society, Student of the Semester, Student of Character,

Extracurriculars:

Journalism (Senior Editor, Radio Station Founder and Manager, Politics Beat Writer), lettered
Track and Field (competition thrower), lettered

Band (although a class, still demands enough to be deemed an EC. Marching band (Aux. Perc./Trumpet), Jazz Band (Trumpet), Pep Band (Sousa/Trumpet), Concert Band (French Horn), lettered

Order of the Arrow-BSA: Chapter (local city, 100 members) Chief, Lodge (state, 500 members) Secretary, Vice Chief, and Chief, Section (Three states, 5000+ members) Secretary, Chief. I am also involved with the content branch of the OA where I write articles and serve as a team lead (four years).

Teenage Republicans (Work with local GOP campaigns as a volunteer and also attend Teenage Republican events)

Debate/Poli. Sci. Club (only did one year, Freshman year. Not offered at my current high school.)

HOSA Member (Not going into a medical field, but I have an interest in anatomical/biological sciences)

Destination Imagination: Participated from 2nd to 8th grade, competed at Global Finals three times, presently volunteer as an Assistant Team Manager and volunteer at the Regional and State competitions.

Job/Work Experience: Three summers at local Boy Scout camp, I’ve been working at a local pizza restaurant for over 1.25 years now.

Volunteer/Community Service: Volunteered with National Park Service for a week in 2014. Volunteered with National Forest Service for a week in 2014. Staffed at the 2013 National Scout Jamboree (was in the field helping WV communities about 12 days I was there), Will have donated a gallon of blood in December, Volunteered 3 years at local Christian music festival (Lifelight). Volunteer with South Dakota GOP (2014 Election Season)

Teacher Recommendation #1: Government Teacher: Good
Teacher Recommendation #2: English Teacher: Good
Counselor Rec: New Counselor this year. I’ll be interviewing with her to aid her in her recommendation. I’m willing to say it’ll be good.
Additional Rec: Haven’t turned in yet, but am looking to have a long time scouting leader do it for me. (Likely good)

U.S. State/Territory or Country: South Dakota
School Type: Public High School
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $75,000

Note: I don’t feel like I have the strongest academics, especially when I look at my class rank (not knowing how my class actually is). I also feel like I’ve put all my eggs into one basket with the Boy Scouts, but try to keep in mind that this is small town South Dakota and the only other real alternative is playing football/basketball (or drugs).

I’m also feeling a bit lost in writing the supplement essay as I only have rough ideas as to how UPenn, and the east coast academic environment, is. However, I know that I want an academically challenging school with a diverse student body in a large community. From what I’ve seen, UPenn is a perfect fit for me and I’m willing to put my word to it (ED).

Not taking an AP exam due to a track meet usually means you take it on the alternate date. South Dakota is a hook. I hope you mean donating a gallon of blood as of December, not in December considering most people only have six pints total.

I don’t think 2nd through 8th grade counts.

Do we get a financial aid packet with our acceptance letter if we are accepted ED? Do I have to fill out a CSS Profile or anything?

Look at Penn’s FA page: <a href=“Submit My Documents | Penn Student Registration & Financial Services| Penn Srfs”>http://www.sfs.upenn.edu/finaid-checklists/checklists-pro-us</a>.</p>

The dates are all there.

That link is not quite complete, and won’t work. Here’s the entire functioning link:

Hi I’m planning to ED @Wharton. My SAT is 2260 and un weighted GPA 3.6. I’ve good EC with 6 leader ships. what are my chances to Wharton? Thanks for your advise.

Y’all looking for chances should be using Naviance and Parchment. They both have really good information, and if your school uses Naviance, they will have results from your school posted (unless your school is really small).

Sorry about the wrong link!

@ababias‌ I’m in the same boat as you. High test scores and EC’s but 3.6 gpa
