I guess there's no telling, because a couple of years ago my son applied with a 4.6 and a 1400-something and did not get anywhere near a full ride scholarship. He had no desirable "hook" however. (Sorry if that's bad news for you sophie4.)

i know, i don't get it. she's involved in all sorts of activities and has over 500 hours communitiy service, won many recognition awards throughout the years. she'll graduate probably as one of the top 3 in her class. yet pitt hasn't said a word about any merit money.

Oooo, I just noticed that you are from Pittsburgh. I have come to think that might be a negative, as we are local too. All of the chancellors scholars I know of are oos.

Maybe you should call the Admissions office and let them know that your daughter meets the honors college criteria, but that you haven't heard from them yet. That should get her at least a couple thousand.

I do not normally post on the UPitt board but I do read the posts. I got my acceptance letter about two weeks ago and I my honors college and full tution scholarship letter this Saturday. :)

STATS
2020 SAT 30 ACT
Rank: 50/642
GPA 3.9
Good recs, essays
Out of State (VA)

I should have posted this a long time ago... anyway...
ACCEPTED for the class of 2011- Honors College, CAS. Full tuition scholarship, still waiting to hear back as to whether or not I'm getting a Chancellor's Scholarship interview.
Didn't take the SAT- ACT 33
Unranked
GPA 3.95 currently, 3.93 at the time
Excellent recs and essays
Out of state- Washington (State, not DC)
Lots of EC's, 300+ hrs community service
Prospective neuroscience/premed major, will also interview for the guaranteed med school acceptance program if I get an interview for Chancellor's- might still do it if I don't get an interview for Chancellor's, but it will take a lot of convincing on their part to get me to fly out for one hour-long interview...

I think you should get it. You have ****loads of ECs and community service. That is important because pretty much everyone who is a Chancellor Nominee has good grades.

Yes, I think you're right, goodbrew. They're looking above-and-beyond grades, gpa, scores. The student offered an interview for the Chancellor's has to have something that catches their attention and makes him/her stand out as a candidate with unique qualities/background, IMO.

Our D did not get the chancellors interview, but she did get the med school interview and that is when we decided to pay the bucks and fly her and H up. It is a lot more than a one hour interview (well, actually, the interview for med school is more like 20 minutes, but it comes after a 4 hour tour of the med school facility).

You are on the 4 hour tour with college seniors who are applying to the med school. You will go on to a short interview while the seniors will get grilled for an hour or more by a committee. On D's tour, she and another girl were the only two who were hs seniors. The rest of the tour couldn't believe they were only in hs. And the college seniors were so jealous! They were going through such agony for the application process that D said right then if she got the offer from Pitt for med school, no way was she saying no.

Alas, she did not get the offer, but by then she was sold on Pitt and went anyway. She's a freshman in engineering. And she also (apparently, this is recent news) no longer wants to go to med school and is switching her major to mechanical engineering. Oh well, at least now I don't have to worry about how to pay for med school (unless she changes her mind again).

But gracello, the Pitt neuroscience dept is first rate and shares faculty with CMU. Some of the neuro faculty is from the med school. The research facilities are fabulous. You can use your visit time to check all this out and compare to your other choices. The med school tour and interview are in the morning. You eat lunch in their cafeteria. Afterwards, you have the afternoon to tour the rest of Pitt, visit the honors college office, and you can set up a tour/meet profs with the neuroscience dept too.

The other girl on D's interview day had done like 6 of these early admit things. She was really going after it.

^^ Since your daughter is into eng. research (i am freshman eng. too.), is she going for the Living research community at Pennsylvania hall next year? i was curious to find out what the program was like. oh ya, ask her if she knows Dan Budny :D

brew - I have no clue what she's doing for housing next year. Apparently she doesn't think she needs to relay that info. I'm just hoping she gets her deposit in on time!

Thanks guys- your comments make me feel much better. I hadn't been truly interested in Pitt before applying, just sort of passively so, but the merit money is definitely enticing and all of the positive things I've been hearing about the school (especially the reputation of the premed/neuroscience programs) have been really helpful. Mercymom- did your family have good impressions of the undergrad research opportunities at Pitt, or was that not a focus? Also, did she have previous medical experience (hospital internship/medical volunteer work, etc) or get the vibe that other students interviewing did? (#2 I ask because my EC's are not medically focused, purely because of the lack of ability to do that in my area).

gracello - no, we didn't focus on research opptys, and no, D did not have previous medical experience. I hate to say it but prior experience is most likely why she didn't get the guarantee. We only met two kids last year at Pittstart who did get the guarantee (there are supposed to be 5, but we only met two). Both of them were bioengineering majors and they both had 100s of hours of hospital research logged at major research hospitals where they lived (both in big cities). The other hs senior on the tour with D had also logged 100s of hours but we never found out how she did.

I really don't want to discourage you with that info. I believe in the "there's always a chance" outlook on life, but I do think that's one reason why the interview is so short, ie, they have made up their mind based on your resume and are talking to you to confirm whatever impression they made. Someone told us last year the decision was based on the resume and they were looking for "commitment to medicine".

Four our D the experience of trying out for it and her Pitt visit is why she decided to go to Pitt and she does not regret it at all. She's very happy. She said that she was glad in a way she did not get the guarantee 'cause then she wouldn't feel guilty if she decided not to go to med school and it looks like that has already happened.

I'd still recommend going for the interview experience if you can afford it, and try to explain in writing ahead of time if you can why your geographic location did not afford you the kind of opportunities that might exist elsewhere. Try to emphasize why you think you want to go to med school, what your research goals are, and why they should take you. Present yourself in the best possible light and be earnest. They have to pick someone, right, why not you?

Good luck to you. Also spend some time on the neuroscience web page and the honors page and see what the ug research opptys are...I know they're there!

If you do go for the med school tour, you are going to absolutely fall in love with the med school facility. UPMC is one of the most popular programs in the country. We were extremely impressed.

Just found out I was admitted (mail postmarked on Jan 24th - gotta love living abroad). I've been invited to the University Honors College! And the letter says that I'll get notification of scholarships, if I'm eligible, in a few weeks. What are my prospects and for which scholarships?

SAT: 2170 (730 W, 730 M, 710 CR)

Most challenging curriculum offered at school.
Top 5% of class.
For essay, wrote about experience of travel. I really played the diversity aspect (hispanic).

Sounds like you stand a good chance to get some $; however, remember that Pitt has rolling admissions, and many students have already been awarded some generous scholarships ( i.e., Honors full tuition; Chancellor's Nominee) over the past few months. Pitt's website can give you more specific details on the individual awards. Good luck!

My first acceptance letter! I similar to other members of CC have been invited to the University Honors College. Since I applied very late I don't know if I'm eligible for a merit scholarship, but I hope so.

Most challenging courses and great teacher recommendations. I wrote a unique essays on my interests and how they would lend themselves to Pitt. I'm actually looking forward to visiting Pitt, although I applied on a whim, it seems to be a really good school worthy of much more than a brief glimpse.

I got my acceptance letter about a week ago and im still SUPER excited!! Ive been accepted to about 3 other schools but I absolutley cant wait to visit the campus....visiting would pretty much seal the deal for me as Pitt was one of my top choices.

You talk to your adviser, who gives you a form you fill out. She then submits it and someone higher on the food chain approves it. You then get assigned a new adviser.
