dont forget to apply to the honors dorms! they are a great place to live your freshman year! Congrats to all, and hope to see you next year :-)

Accepted :)
Hope to see you all there next year!

Regarding Honors College, my son was accepted to it with 1410 Critical Reading/Math SAT but second decile high school rank. (His high school does not give exact rank). So, they must be able to bend that top 5% rank rule and look at other factors when choosing students for Honors.

I've said it a million times...DON'T WORRY ABOUT NOT GETTING INTO HONORS!

I just want to make it 100% clear to everyone applying right now that you CAN get into honors after your first semester pulling a 3.25 (B+) average.

There was not a snowball's chance in **** that I would have gotten into honors out of high school, but I was an honors student after my first semester at Pitt. All it meant was that I wasn't eligible for honors housing my freshman year. There are many places to live other than honors housing to meet academically interested students, believe me! :)

/rant off!

Ophiolite, how are the freshman dorms for non honors kids? Are they bearable?

They are the same dorms as the honors kids, just different floors. Worst case, if you don't like your floor, hang out with the honors kids on their floor.

I actually quite enjoyed the freshman dorms at Pitt. They aren't luxurious, but they get the job done.

hey everyone, new member here

just wanted to say that I got into UPitt's School of Nursing =]...don't know yet if i'll be going there next year but i'm just excited that i got in

adavc6,
Welcome and congratulations. My daughter will be going to Pitt in the fall and majoring in nursing, too. She is also OOS.

Congratulations adavc6! Pitt's nursing school is in the top 10 USNW. It was also written up in Newsweek along with the UPMC hospital system as an innovator in nursing education. You're very lucky. btw, I think there is special student loan financing available for nurses due to the nationwide shortage. Be sure to look into that.

thanks mercymom and stowmom =]

Congrats to all that got into Pitt's Nursing program. It is a a challenging program. Definitely one of the best and most prestigious nursing schools.

DD was accepted! She received a letter about two weeks after all requirements were in which notified her of her acceptance to engineering and to the honors college. A week later she got a packet of info about the Honors College and a separate letter offering automatic acceptance into the graduate program. Two days later she received a letter offering her a full tuition scholarship!! It's been a very exciting ten days!! She has yet to visit so that's next, but she says it feels nice to be so wanted and that it's high on her list right now.

Basic Stats: 790m, 690v, 710w (one sitting) 97 weighted gpa, 2/450 rank. Almost all honors and 6 AP classes.

SLMOM - What kind of auto acceptance for grad school do they have in engineering? I didn't know they had something like that. Does it depend on your proposed specialty?

Mercymom,

DD received a letter from the School of Engineering which said "..we would like to extend an additional admission offer - that of guaranteed admission to the MS graduate engineering program of your choice at the University of Pittsburgh" She'd have to stay in engineering and have a 3.5 QPA.

I didn't find anything on their website about the guarantee program.. but in the letter the person's name to contact is Lauran Byland in the Freshman Program Office.

DD hasn't even thought about graduate school (just getting through 5 years of undergrad and co-op seems like long term planning at this point) but it sure was nice to to get the offer.

Thanks, SLMOM, and congratulations to your D. Mine is a freshman at Pitt in engineering; I guess since she was considered for the guaranteed med school thing last year, maybe she wasn't considered for the masters thing. (or maybe she was - yikes!)

Anyway, that is awesome news for you. D's older sister is looking at grad schools now, and prepping for the GRE, etc (in audiology). That process is a lot of pressure, let me tell you, and if you had a chance to avoid it, what a plus that would be. That said, our Pitt D turned down just such a guarantee at U Miami in bioengineering. Mostly 'cause she didn't want to go to school in Florida after all.

Good luck to you and do go visit Pitt. It was the campus visit and interview for the med school that made the decision for D. Of course, now she is thinking about doing mechanical engrg instead of bio, so med school may never happen. At 18 it's very hard to really know what you want. Good luck!

My son recently got accepted into the bioengineering program at Pitt. He also got into UConn and Binghamton. Any advice? Thanks

i got a $10,000 dollar per year scholarship today

qrd567, what was your SAT score?? my D got into the honors college with 4.4+ GPA, and i believe about a 1350 on just math/verbal. this was shy of their 1400+ SAT requirement to be invited for the scholarship competition so i'm wondering what kind of merit money she may be given (if any).

a lot of ppl on here who had those type of scores and GPA got full tuition or close to it. I think the only reason I got money was because I am a URM. My ACT score was a 27.
