Official University of Rochester 2015 Decision Thread

So since the first wave of UR decisions has been released, I figured it was time to put up a decision thread.

[ b]Objective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] SAT I (800 Reading, 730 Writing, 730 Math, 2260 Composite Though I honestly cannot remember whether or not I sent my SAT’s):
[ *] ACT: 36
[ *] SAT II: Not sent
[ *] Unweighted GPA (Only know weighted, 4.2 on a 4.5 H scale (though the scale in actuality maxes out at ~4.3 because of mandatory non honors classes)):
[ *] Rank (Top 3%):
[ *] Senior Year Course Load:AP English, AP Calc BC, AP Gov, Econ, H Orgo/H Anatomy & Physiology, World Geography (total blow-off class) (It’s worth noting that I signed up for AP classes that ended up not being offered for lack of interest, BUT my counselor is fantastic and put something about that in her rec so what might otherwise be a less impressive course load ended up looking not as lackluster.)
[ *] Major Awards (National Merit Finalist):

[ /list][ b]Subjective:[ /b][ list]
[ *] Extracurriculars (CC and track 4 years, V letter in CC):
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Worked part time in school year and longer hours in summer since 8th grade
[ *] Volunteer/Community service:School mandated 60 hrs + ~20 extra
[ *] Summer Activities: Internship at a local college in a microbiology lab
[ *] Essays: Pretty good I thought, I’m gay so I had plenty to write about with regard to coming out and stuff. I feel like the reviewers would love that subject matter (I hope)
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: One was probably fantastic, I trust that teacher implicitly but I didn’t get to read the letter. The other I read and was fine, but not spectacular.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Great I’m sure. The counselors at my school are outstanding with regard to the pains they take to get kids in their colleges of choice.
[ *] Additional Rec: None
[ *] Interview: None

[ /list][ b]Other[ /b][ list]
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yessir
[ *] Intended Major: Tentatively molecular bio
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): Michigan
[ *] Country (if international applicant):
[ *] School Type: Parochial
[ *] Ethnicity: White, unfortunately
[ *] Gender: Male
[ *] Income Bracket: ~80,000 but I’m from an affluent area so that may work against me.
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Gay? Other than that nothing in particular.

[ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list]
[ *] Strengths: Test scores for sure, essay topic if not strength of writing, grades, lab work over the summer
[ *] Weaknesses: The one teacher rec, maybe. Also my lack of community service hours. I have a decent amount, but that may not work for me if they see that I basically did the bare minimum required by the school.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted: Probably because I have a pretty strong academic record. I’m guessing that the struggles with homosexuality did not hurt.
[ /list][ b]General Comments:[ /b] Congratulations to all who have made it already, best of luck to those who haven’t YET. Now I’m just crossing my fingers for the Renaissance scholarship or some serious money through something else.

Sorry for the double post but I realized my formatting error and this is a lot easier to read…
I hope I’m not breaking some rule or another

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 610 CR, 740 M, 700 W (2050 total)
[] ACT: 22 Reading, 24 Science, 34 Math, 32 English, 28 Composite (I hope this encourages people to look beyond test scores)
[] SAT II: 720 Math I & II
[] Unweighted GPA: 4.0, 4.23 Weighted
[] Rank: 1/200
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Chemistry, Advanced Speech, Physics, AP Calculus AB (Independent Study BC), AP Environmental Science, Academic Chemistry Mentor, Creative Writing, Independent Study Tennis
[li] Major Awards: QuestBridge Finalist, Ralph Waldo Emerson Scholar of the Year (school award)
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[li] Extracurriculars: Student Council, Academy of Science & Natural Resources, Track & Field, Tennis Organization For Teens (Founder & President), Red Cross (Treasurer), Speech & Debate, IGNITE Student Mentor, Key Club (Vice President), Site Council Student Representative
[/li]

[] Job/Work Experience: Tutored math
[] Volunteer/Community service: Outdoor School Student Leader, STARS Student Counselor, helping my mom rehabilitate from her stroke
[] Summer Activities: TrackersNW Counselor-in-Training
[] Essays: For the common application, I wrote about my public education and how its truly diverse environment has shaped me into a better person (also about being an immigrant). My additional essay centered around my mom’s stroke, my home foreclosure, and how I dealt with these events.
Supplements were average. For the first essay, I wrote about my experience being a first-time student leader for Outdoor School, reflecting on personal growth and achievement. I made it clear in my second essay that I had an eclectic mix of interests, and by allowing me to be at the center of my own education, I would be able to pursue and study all that I love.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably amazinggg! My chemistry teacher loves me XD
[] Counselor Rec: I don’t remember sending one…
[] Additional Rec: I thought about it…then forgot about it…
[] Interview: Went very well! I talked more about my commitment to helping my mom rehabilitate. Was asked how I would handle going so far off for college. I think I said something along the lines of being ready to embrace my independence and that I had the support of my mom and many friends. Other than that, I was very brain dead that evening and am unsure of what came out of my mouth! (I think I’m brain dead right now too)

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: YES
[] Intended Major: Engineering? Dentistry? Environmental Science? I have little clue >.>
[] State: OR
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Vietnamese
[] Gender: M
[] Income Bracket: $0
[] Hooks: First generation, loads of involvement (2000+ hours?), passion.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Definitely my essays and activities, but also overcoming hardships.
[] Weaknesses: Test scores
[li] Why you think you were accepted: Probably because I ROCKED my essays!! I let several people look over them and half of them cried after reading so I’m confident they are good quality :)[/li][/ul]General Comments: I would normally not post such private information, but I feel like it would be a confidence booster for test score paranoids, first generation applicants, and students who have taken on unique struggles. But other than that, good luck to those who are still waiting!

[] Volunteer/Community service: School requires 180 hours; I did a bit more than that at a library over 4 years.
[] Summer Activities: Slept a lot.
[] Essays: I thought they were really nerdy.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was really generic and badly typed. The other one I didn’t read, but everything that teacher does tends to be fantastic. I brought up a 62 in her class to a 77 (final grade), so she probably wrote about that.

Objective:
SAT: 2000 (CR-600, W-690, M-710)

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Cross Country-Varsity Letter, All-Academic Team; Chorus (Treasurer); Blood Drive (Student Coordinator); Mu Alpha Theta Math Honors Society (Vice-President); Peer Natural Helpers (Elected Peer Support Group); Drama; Track & Field; National Honors Society; Tri-M Music Honors Society; Cool-It Team; Orchestra
Job/Work Experience: Lifeguard at Town Community Center; Lifeguard and Counselor at a summer day camp; Teacher at my old elementary school’s Before/After-School Program
Volunteer/Community service: Local hospital volunteer
Summer Activities: Day Camp Counselor/Lifeguard
Essays: I wrote about my trip to Italy.
Teacher Recommendation: One was from my junior English teacher–I didn’t particularly enjoy the subject or teacher, but that class taught me the most out of any class I’ve taken. I read the recommendation, though, and it was fairly bland. My other recommendation was from my junior Biology teacher, who is also in charge of our school’s blood drive, for which I also assist organizing. I have no doubts that she wrote a fantastic letter for me.
Counselor Rec: She knew me pretty well, and seemed to put a decent amount of effort into collecting information from me.
Interview: I thought it went well. However, I left feeling as though my interviewer talked way more about his Rochester experiences than about who I was, and what I planned to do. It wasn’t what I expected, but I nonetheless learned a lot about Rochester!

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Biomedical Engineering. I also want to try to minor in mathematics and Italian.
State (if domestic applicant): CT
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male

Reflection:
Strengths/Weaknesses: I am fairly well-rounded collectively, but because of this no one category particularly stands out as amazing.
Why you think you were accepted: Because they liked me.
