Reflection

Strengths: My acceptance letter said I was chosen due to my passion for engineering and my desire to use film as a tool. I was surprised cos I demonstrated these two things to a high extent. Surprised my acceptance letter was specifically for me. It also mentioned they had a 25% acceptance rate so that is for anyone
Weaknesses: SAT scores. The test does not fully show academic strength and is very winnable to those who can game. Amean seriously, obscure words and all!
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:I can grow there and contribute to their community. Part of the chosen 25%

ACT (breakdown): 35 (35E, 34M, 36R, 34S, 9 essay)–taken once
SAT II (place score in parentheses): 770 US History, 710 Chemistry

Subjective:

Summer Activities: Mini Medical School at the UR (2015), volunteering, working
Essays: Common app essay 11/10, this essay I took a lot of pride in and my English teacher loved it. It was about what I’ve learned from participating in robotics. 10/10 for the supplemental essay, my teacher loved this one as well, and this was about having major back surgery and how that’s inspired me to pursue medicine in the future.
Teacher Recommendations: 9/10 for my PreCalc teacher, I’m just concerned she could’ve put in a comment she made to me about “being very bright but lacking a bit in confidence.” 10/10 for my Spanish teacher, we have a very good relationship and she knows me to be a hardworking student.
Counselor Rec: 8/10. She seems to really love me but since my school only has three counselors, they’re all quite overloaded and I just don’t know if she put enough effort into it to call it fantastic.
Additional Rec: 10/10. It came from a family friend who has known me for a very long time and was able to accurately portray me as a person.
Interview: 8/10. I only say this because I had a student interviewer and we did not talk very long. However, we connected pretty well as she’s from Rochester too.

Won’t give these a number, because I have no idea how one can do that! I tried to emphasize my passion for linguistics and my intellectual curiosity/general nerdiness. As my supplement I sent in a video of myself doing two monologues and explained why I wanted to pursue the unique stage management certificate.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to UMass Amherst Honors EA, Hampshire EA, Wellesley EE. Still waiting for Swarthmore, Haverford, Brown, and Yale.

@NICE8x , I suspect they personalize the letter for everyone. I am sure 99% of the letter is the same for everyone though. There was a sentence that mentioned unique aspects my daughter had very specifically mentioned. Probably each rep just plugs a sentence like that into the letter:-) It was a nice touch though.

@NICE8x I agree with @Lindagaf, I think they do that for everyone. I have not heard of other colleges doing that.

Case Western does this also.

@DOLIKEIDO @iocbobby10 My friends think that I’m crazy for applying to 15 schools. It is nice to find people on the internet who make you feel less insane

@DOLIKEIDO @iocbobby10 @NICE8x
Now that the applications are complete, do you feel like you applied to too many? I only applied to 10 (which is still more than most kids at my high school), but it took a lot to convince myself not to apply to a whole bunch of others, and immediately after I kept regretting not applying to more. Now, though, I’ve heard back from one match and two safeties (I applied to an excessive number of safeties…) and I feel like I seriously could have cut back.

@usualhopeful it was stressful applying to a lot of colleges, but in my case; I’m an international and I needed a lot of fin aid. I guess what I’m trying to say is, whenever I wanted to not apply to a certain college, I would say to myself, “why not”… so it’s just a decision you make for yourself and know if you need to cast a wide net or a short one or if you just want to feel safe with too many safeties. Now, I’m happy I applied to every single one of them because the hardwork is over, it’s decision and money time!
