Accepted CAS

Objective:
SAT I superscore (breakdown M/CR/W/Essay): 770/800/780
SAT II (subject, score): Chem 750 Math 2 740 Lit 740
Unweighted/Weighted GPA: UW 3.78 / W 4.38 (weakest area, I’ve gotten my fair share of B’s)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t rank. Top 15% for sure, pretty sure around 9-12%.
AP/IB (place score in parentheses): Calc AB - 5, WHAP - 4, Chem - 4, ELit - 4, Physics B - 4
Senior Year Course Load: Spanish AP, Physics AP, Calc BC AP, and an English Honors class. Small note - due to a good amount of extracurrics i have 12 grades on my transcript but only 7 classes, which is way more than usual for any in my grade
Number of other ED applicants in your school: 5 including me, none stand out that much though.
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): Some service awards
Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): AP Scholar w/Distinction, National Merit Semifinalist

Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description):
Job/Work Experience: None in the school year
Volunteer/Community Service: About 500 hours done so far (which I believe is the most in my year). Majority have been with this program for lower-income kids - since Junior year I have tutored or taught about 4 hours a week. Also helped with shelters, about 2 hours a week from frosh-2nd semester junior year. (I actually have about 650 hours done but I didn’t enter a lot)
Summer Experience: After soph year, I was a graphic design/marketing intern at a startup. Designed website, made strategies, etc.
After Junior Year - taught at same program for lower income kids. Paid small stipend. Very intensive program, about 8 weeks but the general clock in/clock out was from 7:30 AM - 6:30 PM. It’s a pretty well recognized program.
Teacher Recommendation #1: English teacher, fantastic rec. He’s known for writing great recs, and I TA for him - he knows me really well, we’re very close.
Teacher Recommendation #2: Calc Teacher, Great rec. Also known for writing good recs, and we’re also pretty close.
Counselor Rec: Pretty Good
Additional Info/Rec: Very good, from employer I worked with over the summer. Factors well into my essay.
Interview: I thought it was pretty good - guy right out of Penn, but it might’ve been a little bit informal.

Other stuff
Speech and Debate, 4 years, various awards. VLD captain.
Link Crew, 2 years.
Leader of immersions at my school - I wrote about some of these in my commonapp.
Various clubs and stuff at my school, I just put down 2 that I’m the president/co-president of.

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Why Penn: 9.5. I did a lot of work for this essay, and everyone that read it really really liked it. Written about service - I’m applying to PPE with the intent of getting a law degree to do government work, it related pretty well.
CommonApp Essay: 8. It was alright. Lot of work put in, and certainly good - friends that read it said it was a 9 or 10, but it was not near the quality of my penn essay. So, 8.

Other:
Date Submitted App: 10/25
U.S. State/Territory or Country: California
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Pakistani
Gender: Male
Income Bracket Range: Pretty high up there
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Uhhhhhhh

To anyone who got deferred, keep up the fight. To anyone who got rejected, do not worry you are all fantastic amazing people who deserve to be happy so go be happy

@chancemaster - Yeah, you’re totally right. UPenn admissions officers are a bunch of idiots. They literally have no idea what they’re talking about, accepting valedictorians and whatnot, pshaw. Maybe you should have learned to balance your “rigorous” sport and challenging schedule better. The type of kid UPenn would accept could probably handle just that and not have their GPA take a beating.

I’m done with this conversation - obviously there is a clear, concrete reason as to why UPenn didn’t think you’d be fit at their school while that other girl is, but I sure as heck don’t know, lol.

Decision: Accepted - SEAS

Reflection:
I am so elated right now. Everyone around me was telling me I would get in and I thought so too but I was getting a little discouraged over the past couple days. But I got in and I couldn’t be any happier. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t succeed because there have been plenty of people on CC that said I wouldn’t get in. And there have also been plenty of people with better scores/grades than me that have been rejected. Just trust your gut. And just to be clear, the fact that I’m black is NOT the reason I was admitted. Iv’e been working my butt off since I stepped foot in a school. For those who have been rejected, there IS somewhere out there for you and you WILL succeed. For those who have been deferred, keep your head up, you still have a chance and you will end up at a great school regardless of what happens in March. And for those who have been accepted, I’ll see you at Penn!

Weaknesses: TEST SCORES, Volunteer Work, and AP Scores,
Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I’ve Also applied to Duke, Cornell, UCSB, UVA, Johns Hopkins, College of William and Mary, U of Richmond, and UNC @ Chapill Hill. Penn is the only school I’ve heard from so far.
What would you have done differently?: I would have spent more time volunteering during High School (I did some little things in Mid. School that don’t matter). I would have studied for SAT/ACT a lot more and practiced harder (particularly the Science section). Taken Harder Classes Freshman/Sophomore year. Cared more about AP exams at the end of the year instead of brushing them off as “unimportant”.

Reflection
Strengths: ECs were all long term commitments. Essays and letters were strong too. I think my essays really showed Penn who I was and that I had done my research into their school and found reasons that it matched what I wanted and I matched what Penn asks for. Course rigor + predicted grades was a side my school liked to encourage me with. SATI and SATII weren’t too bad I guess
Weaknesses: Low grades were sent to Penn. The transcript got sent off before my huge improvement and that’s what worried me.
What would you have done differently?: Worked harder in school during my junior year.

Were else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: accepted to Rutgers; Still waiting on 14 other colleges which come out in the spring so I’m still hopeful
What would you have done differently?: I honestly don’t know. Should’ve probably participated more in HS, but wayyyy too late for that. Maybe I should’ve identified with a minority to get some affirmative action? Sorry if I sound bitter, just super angry/sad/depressed. Penn was my number 1 choice. I thought I would atleast get deferred if anything. Whatever, penn literally just went from #1 to #15.
Other Factors:
Honestly, I’m really surprised I got in. Among the IB diploma candidates at my school, I’m not the strongest, yet almost nobody has gotten into their top choice school. I think the fact that I skipped grades and have a legacy did impact the decision, because I’ve gotten a lot of Bs in high school.
