in terms of prestige wake forest really isn’t in the same league as NYU. in terms of USNWR it is.

if i were to tell people i was going to wake forest they’d probably have no clue what i’m talking about. everyone knows NYU though.

i don’t know how the academics are at wake forest… so i couldn’t even say if they are in the same league academically… but they’re probably really similar?

I REALLY don’t see why people are so adamant about schools like Wake Forest, Georgetown, etc moving up in the rankings by 5-10 spots. Sure, they are good schools, but do you REALLY think they are better than schools like Northwestern, Duke, Brown, Johns Hopkins, etc?

I think the only schools that deserve a higher ranking are Berkeley, NYU, Michigan, and Carnegie Mellon. Each one of them is highly underrated by a lot of people, especially some of the youngsters on this board who base 70% of their opinions on US News and hearsay.

Hope2getrice: I agree with everything you said.

Called me biased if you wish, but I think NYU deserves go up 5 or 10 spots. The Class of 2012 acceptance rate dropped 8 percent to 24%, if that means anything in terms of the rankings.

And with the strength of its Arts and Science programs, and law/business/arts programs being at the levels that they are, it should definitely be ranked higher. Best case scenario, I can see it breaking Top 25, but not much beyond than that. With all due respect, I don’t see how places like Brandeis, Wake Forest, and even W&M or UNC are ranked as highly as they are. I mean… they’re all great schools, but are they really on par with internationally renowned schools like Berkeley, NYU, Michigan and such?

clarification: Clemson will be in the top 20 public schools
people usually take the top 20 goal as meaning top 20 school overall but it’s just top 20 public schools which means top 60 overall

I expect the ranking for Boston College to move down slightly. Selectivity for the Class of 2013 hasn’t been as high as it was for the Class of 2012.

I believe that Princeton will regain its spot as the world’s #1 university. As for everything else, I am completely apathetic.

^Well sorry to burst your bubble pal, but NYU is about as well-known as Berkeley / Michigan around the world. I agree that Berkeley / Michigan are probably better in most areas, but NYU’s in the same category in terms of int’l renown. No need to get aggressive. Try talking to international students. They know a thing or two about which universities are well-respected around the world since they’re from… around the world. Oh wait, you can’t, because you’re not in college yet… Well, I’m sorry Tufts isn’t as well-known around the planet.

I would imagine that a big part of NYU’s name power may come from the “New York.” Would a similar school(in academic quality) operating as “Memphis University,” for example, have as much renown/prestige?

um you clearly are extremely ignorant. and you probably shouldn’t be so aggressive when you have absolutely no knowledge on the subject.

name another university that has main campuses in both NYC and Abu Dhabi… exactly. not only does it have another main campus but it has so many satellite campuses throughout the world. i think the only continent nyu doesn’t have campuses on is australia and antarctica (obvs)

NYU and UMich are definitely peer institutions. internationally and nationally - so cut it.

HADC10: It could also have something to do with the fact that NYU’s a top university. I don’t think the City University of NEW YORK (CUNY) has the same recognition that NYU has.

It really is amazing how underrated NYU is on these forums. Unfortunately, the children on CC can’t see past USNews Rankings and outdated Collegeboard statistics.

NYU is definitely a top 25 university. If I said that in person to all of you, I would not be stuttering. I mean it for many reasons. The best job market in the world( not during an economic meltdown) is in New York City. I have lived in NYC for over 5 years, and the opportunities are rampant like no other city - LA, Chicago, DC - nothing compares to New York City. The reason why I want to go to NYU so badly is because of the city. There is no doubt that the city is what makes the university. ( Why do you CCer’s think they called it “New York” University.) Of course there are pros and cons of going to every university, but in terms of job placement, salary potential, and lifestyle, there is none other than NYU. NYC offers the best lifestyle out of any place. Restaurants, Culture( The multitudes of it), nightlife, Museums, Art galleries ( Chelsea :X), and sight seeing cannot be beat anywhere else in this world. I have experienced a lot in my life - I have lived in many places, I have seen many things - but nothing is like NYC.

Also, I see a lot of people are talking about “international prestige” and let me tell you something, people know NYU like they know NYC. Just look at all of the cultures represented in Manhattan. How many people do business in NYC??? MILLIONS of people: tourists, artists, musicians, actors, celebrities, etc etc.

Also I see people mentioning how other universities that are close to NYU in USNR rankings are similar quality. I feel ashamed for you guys. The only reason NYU suffers a little in rankings is because sport teams and the like are part of the methodology of rankings. Even with this sort of vice, NYU will be a top 30 university soon, and it will only be climbing the collegiate ladder.

There is no way you can even begin to compare the research that comes out of Berkeley/Michigan to NYU. Its not that any of those schools are better than the other, they just are in completely different categories. Maybe in terms of name recognition world wide, they might compare. But the focus of the schools seem a lot different.

And I have family around the globe, and relatives in academia and the sciences. Berkeley/Michigan are pretty much golden when it comes to anything research related. NYU? not so much. Not because the school itself is worse, but its different.

I never said anything about research. But skateboarder is correct that Michigan and Berkeley is much better in research and get much more federal aid to do research. But let me ask you: Can undergraduates do research at Berkeley/Michigan/NYU? (This is a rhetorical question) The answer is no.

Your argument is thus invalid. We are talking about undergraduate rankings.

As a personal aside, I feel like a decent amount of people have a problem with NYU because it offers a different experience. Since it’s not a traditional undergraduate experience, it’s therefore inferior to your typical gated campus.

NYU offers more than an excellent education. It gives college students the opportunity to live in the real world. Going down the street, students aren’t the only people you pass. One day, you might be walking past a celebrity and the next day you could be passing drunken homeless men. The same can’t be said about a gated campus.
