Might as well start this, applications are already in
My stats:
SAT: 1540
GPA: 4.0
9th & 10th grade: homeschool
Including 2 AP exams (Calculus AB, Computer Science A) in 10th grade
11th & 12th: running start, full time
About 60 credits so far from Bellevue (by the end of fall quarter)
Applied for CS, trying to get direct admission
Question for the CC community: Do you think I’m pretty much in for CS because of the changes to direct admission this year, or if it’s still important to consider other universities? (UW is my top choice.)
If it’s relevant, I have ok ECs (tournament chess player for 4 years, won a few championships; working as math tutor in community college; small amount of volunteer work). I think my essay is ok.
Hi!
My stats:
1560 SAT (770 R&W; 790 Math)
Not sure about unweighted GPA, I think it’s around a 3.95, 3.96? I got one B in freshman English. (My weighted is a 4.39)
I’ve taken 3 AP exams, scored 5s on all 3 (World History, US History, and Calculus AB) and am currently taking 6 APs (Economics, Government, Literature, Environmental Science, Calculus BC, and French)
Applied as a history major, hoping to get in and join their marching band
Hi, I just got the email asking me to set up my Net ID, but when I sign in (I have all the right credentials) it says I’m logged in as an account which can’t authenticate my affiliation? Dunno what to do
I have the same problem with the “can’t authenticate affiliation”
I clicked around and got to a page that says Application Account Menu, but it has things about winter 2018 deadlines and sending in materials by September 2017?? Mega confused
According to the NewID page, they know about this issue and are working on fixing it
@stockfish101 You think you have it in for CS? I’ve heard that last year was <10% acceptance rate. Even with double the amount of admits this year, that’s still under 20%, not to mention the rapidly increasing number of CS applicants to every college in the country. As an in-state student with similar stats to you (1560, 3.84) and UW as a top choice I am still planning to apply to about ten other colleges.
@bandgeekwriter My son has 1580 SAT, two subject SAT of 800 (Math2 and Physics), 8 AP tests (one 4 the rest are 5), and 4 dual enrollment math courses at the local 4-year University, 3 of which are Upper Division Math. And we do not think he is an automatic “in” for CS.
@stockfish101 , @w00pw00p, @ElenaParent , of course there’s no “automatic in” for CS, but you guys/gals should relax a little bit. I like your odds. Think about your competition. The top California kids and top east coast kids will not compete against you. Your competition is mostly Pacific Northwest kids and UW has stated that they favor Washington State residents. Plus the doubling of the direct admit spots this year. I share @stockfish101’s optimism for you guys.
For other applications, try a few moonshots, such as Stanford, CMU, MIT. (Not recommending Berkeley, since it has not much advantage over UW and cost a lot more.) As absolute safety, you still have WSU, which will be an automatic admit with scholarship. Not bad at all.
@bogeyorpar Thank you for that, it feels like this whole site is filled with negativity…I’m not applying for computer science or any type of engineering (not because I’m too dumb, but because I genuinely love history), but I wish you all the best of luck!
@bandgeekwriter Well… My son is one of those, say, “top east coast kids.” He is competing in this pool, with his stats as stated above, for better or for worse… Yes, Wash State favors Washington State residents (as it should), especially in Comp Sci, and my son applied Comp Sci… So do you like his chances, as an OOS?
@ElenaParent Unfortunately, I cannot say anything as I’m only applying now and not even to the computer science program, sorry. Most of what I heard was that Washington was supposedly an easier school to get into than UCLA, Berkeley, Michigan, etc. (I’m from California), but it probably does vary by program.
Hey @bandgeekwriter good luck to you in your applications! As a side note, I am under impression that it is harder to get into UW than into Berkeley and/or UCLA, at least in STEM/computers. Not sure about UMichigan. I may be mistaken though.
@ElenaParent Michigan is usually known for Mechanical Engineering, if I remember correctly, but from what I hear, all computer science programs across the country are overly competitive
Good luck to your son!
Ahhhh I’m so nervous
mine does that too and i also have difficulty logging in
Did anyone else receive the email to create the UW NET iD
@Singaporekid99 I received it a few weeks ago
