Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2290 (800 CR, 740 M, 750 W)
ACT: 32 (didn’t send because why?)
SAT II: 770 US History (picked because this was only course I’d finished by then)
740 English Lit (picked just so my critreading score could overrule it)
Weighted GPA: 4.76
UW GPA: 3.97
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 13/417
AP (place score in parenthesis): European History (5)
IB (place score in parenthesis): Economics (7)
Senior Year Course Load: IB Mathematics SL, IB English HL, IB History of the Americas HL, IB Spanish SL, IB Biology HL, IB Psychology SL, Theory of Knowledge Honors, Government
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Finalist, National Achievement Finalist, Social Studies Keystone Award (school), Scottish Rite JROTC thing, various medals
Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): NJROTC (9-11), Chief Editor of Unit Newsletter (10-11), Academic Team (9-11), Commander of that Team (10-11), Orienteering Team Member (11), Public Affairs Officer (10-11), LGBT Activist (10), Track and Field (Letter, State qualified) (9-12)

Volunteer/Community service: Various activities in name of NJROTC unit, about 20 hours per school year
Summer Activities: Mostly work at McDonalds and spending time with family
Essays: One essay about my passion for psychology and being homosexual with antagonistic parents, another about my activism in NJROTC to get gay couples permitted at the annual Unit Military Ball, another about my efforts to win my parents’ love back again. All homocentric.
Teacher Recommendation: I feel somewhat confident that they were good.
Counselor Rec: I’m guessing that it was good
Additional Rec: Got another teacher who I really loved in 10th grade and really loved me.
Interview: No interview. My life was pretty hectic that month.
Other
State (if domestic applicant): South Carolina
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public with 1 national merit every so often (moi)
Ethnicity: African American
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: I’m not sure. I get free lunch at school.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM (African American)
Reflection
Strengths: Test scores (for an AA…), URM status, well-written essays (writing is my ‘thing’), Activism, Overcoming hardship (I’m poor, and my parents basically tolerate me, at best)
Weaknesses: Not too many ECs, no show of academic interests in my ECs, Class rank, — basically everything except my strengths
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m pretty well-qualified, I’m black, and I put a lot of work into demonstrating interest.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Deferred from Yale…
General Comments: I’d feel better, but all I got from my mom about it was an ‘okay’. >.>

My EC list is a bit bigger now than it was when I applied, but that didn’t influence my application.

[/ul]General Comments:
A lot of people on this website put an extreme premium on SAT scores, which I disagree with. Your life should not be dedicated to taking some stupid test (I took it once). Instead, do activities that you enjoy, try to be as involved as possible, and don’t try to be perfect. Many colleges don’t want perfect people; they’re boring.

I used this website a lot for research while a junior and this year, so feel free to ask me questions (although this is my second post, so I guess visitor messages only…). I’d be happy to help, but keep in mind that I probably don’t know much more than you do.

Decision: Accepted by CAS (MOSAIC)

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): Never taken :frowning:
[] ACT: 35 (35, 36, 35, 32, 9)
[] SAT II: 780 Math II, 730 Chemistry
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.94
[] Weighted GPA: 4.45 (after midyear reports it’s 4.53)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1/~70
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): 5 Chemistry, 5 English Lang, 5 APUSH, 4 Psychology, 3 European History
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): 6 Chemistry SL
[] Senior Year Course Load: IB/AP English Literature HL, IB History of the Americas HL, IB/AP Biology HL, IB Spanish B SL, IB Math Methods SL, ToK, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics B
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): I have some obscure awards but they’re fairly solid (state science fair semifinalist, a few creative writing things, and a top-15 finish at a national math tournament in a science category)
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Mu Alpha Theta (Vice President), Chess Club (founder/vice president), Math Team (shared Captain), and Physics Team (Captain) for the school. I’ve done Karate in the past, but I quit after I got a black belt as a freshman.
[] Volunteer/Community service: I only have about 400 hours here; half are in tutoring programs for my school and the other are in forms of work-study required for CAS in IB (I’m doing a business-management thing currently and last year I did some supervised math teaching at a middle school)
[] Summer Activities: Homework and being a lazy piece of garbage ಠ_ಠ We’ve done some summer math team competitions, but that’s about it.
[] Essays: Definitely not my best piece of writing…
[] Teacher Recommendation: Both from teachers I’ve known for 3 years
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor knows everyone at our school really well, so I’m assuming it was solid
[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: N/A

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Alabama
[] Country (if international applicant): N/A
[] School Type: Public–Magnet
[] Ethnicity: Native American/American Indian/whatever they call it
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: $50,000 - $60,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Apart from test scores (which should be a given at Vandy) and my hook, I don’t really see anything special in my app by CC standards.
[] Weaknesses: Extracurriculars, essay (I had a strong supplemental essay but the Vanderbilt supplement doesn’t have an additional writing section)
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Ehh…
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: UNC (Carolina Scholarship)

[/ul]General Comments:
Good luck to all future applicants!

Can someone elaborate on the Mosaic program?

From the email Vandy sent out:

Essentially prospective students lodge at Vanderbilt for 4 nights and get a feel for the campus while attending a ton of informative events.

So, do you only get it when you have connections with Vanderbilt?

Not that I’m aware of; the only “affiliation” or form of contact I’ve had with Vanderbilt apart from my application was a question about ACT superscoring (i.e., their admissions considers highest composite and highest essay). As in my block quote, it’s a multicultural event, so it presumably targets people of different racial backgrounds and not ones of legacy status.

Ah okay. So how did you go about getting an early admission with regular decision?

I guess Vanderbilt mailed out decisions in advance to encourage students to go to the event since Thursday (w/ likely departure on Wednesday for some) to Sunday is quite a commitment to make.

I am gonna assume that they emailed people who didn’t sign up right away…? I never got any email, but I signed up the 17th. When did they send it?

Decision: Accepted by VANDY
