A D3 coach has invited my son for an official visit. Is there anything we need to know about those? Is there a limit to the number of visits a student can make? Are there any rules we should know about? Thanks!

Our son went through the recruiting process with DI and DIII schools 2 years ago. My memory is that you are limited to 5 official visits (though it can be hard to fit that many in, particularly if the athlete plays a fall sport). However, DIII schools cannot offer “official visits” in which the school pays for transportation to the school, etc. Thus, I don’t think the limit of 5 visits applies to DIII schools. Our son went on some other “invited visits” to DIII schools - they were essentially the same types of recruiting trips except that we had to pay for transportation to the school. As a recruit, he stayed overnight with current team members, attended classes and practices, met with coaching staff, etc. Hope this helps and hope he enjoys the process!

Thanks, Runners2! I appreciate the info!

This should help you with some info. No limit for DIII.

ML:

It would be a good idea for you and your son to read the pamphlet put out by the NCAA for recruited student athletes. Much of what is in here is targeted at D1 and D2 - but pages 17-20 provide info on D3 as well. You also never know - your son may get some interest from a D2 or D1 school and it would be good to know the rules:

The good news is that most of the onus is on the schools to behave properly.
