Handala92… just because you got into Stanford, does not mean you are entitled to get into Rice. Admissions officers are looking at FIT also, and they probably saw you aren’t going to come here. And, be honest, it seems like you already committed to Stanford (as your status shows) or Harvard (if you get in… I saw your post on the main board).

The world isn’t fair. I applied to Stanford last year, spent the most time on their essays, and I got rejected. Be happy about your acceptance to Stanford and don’t think that you are “better” than Rice… because that attitude is coming out quite clear (claiming Rice is practicing Tufts Syndrome). And, please don’t put yourself on the WL if you know you are not going to attend Rice just so you could get gratification for the time spent on the Rice essays… that takes away a spot from someone who really wants to attend.

Good luck to all those on the waitlist… I hope you end up being accepted if Rice is one of your top choices!

I was waitlisted at both CMU and Rice this weekend; pretty rough.

ANyone have links to the 2009 waitlist data?

I don’t know how Rice’s waitlist policy works. Is this, for the most part, a rejection?

Do they have 2 waitlists? I know some schools have priority waitlists and whatnot.

Anyone get the waitlist email yet? I’m curious as to what it says

The Committee on Admission has just completed a most careful evaluation of your application for admission to Rice. You have been selected as an alternate for the class of 2014, and I have been authorized to offer you a place on the waiting list for the fall of 2010. While we recognize this is not what you were hoping for, we want you to know that the decision was not easily reached.

trebleclef, the Committee was impressed by your overall record and qualifications. Our inability to offer you admission at this time is the result of a large number of outstanding candidates vying for a small number of spaces. This year, we received 12,400 applications for only 940 first-year openings.

Your official letter will be mailed March 29. Our selections will be made from those who accept a place on the waiting list. Therefore, we ask that you reply online (User ID: -----) as soon as possible, certainly prior to May 1.

For now, you should secure a place at one of the schools that offered you admission. If we offer you admission later and you choose to attend Rice, you can withdraw your application from the other school. We will complete all wait list movement by July 1, 2010.

Also enclosed with your official letter, you will find some information about the waiting list at Rice. It is impossible for us to predict space availability at this time. We will contact you by the end of May, if not before, with an update on the progress of the waiting list.

Thank you for the time you took to prepare your application and to explore the educational opportunities at Rice. We look forward to receiving your reply and we will hope for the opportunity to contact you with better news in the future.

Yours sincerely,

Julie M. Browning
Dean for Undergraduate Enrollment

Noone was accepted from the waitlist last year. I think they actually got t 200 more students matriculate than they predicted, so they kinda underestimated themselves.

Idk what will happen this year, though. Good luck!

PS. I agree. If you aren’t serious about attending Rice, then don’t take a spot in the WL from someone who REALLY wants to attend.

Is it possible that they thought some of the applicants might not attend based on them listing the other schools they applied too?

I listed my whole list (which included Stanford, MIT, and Yale), even though I didn’t stand a chance at them. Rice was the only one I thought I had a shot at. My essays definitely showed that I was interested and my credentials are in range.

waitlisted at Rice, but then again…my essays were horrible. i got accepted to top colleges with the best essays and rejected as lower colleges with sucky essays…

Important lesson: ESSAYS ARE IMPORTANT AS HELL!!!

There are a myriad of possible reasons why you guys got waitlisted. As for that Princeton guy, maybe he was an athlete or triple legacy (100% hypothetical, I have no idea). Or his parents have close connections with an important board member. It could also do with possible school history with Rice. It could be anything; you don’t know. Don’t waste time agonizing about things already said and done, that are out of your control now. There are always going to be those outliers–and the truth is, you’re never really going to know the full story behind every unusual acceptance (or waitlist or rejection).

If you truly consider Rice to be your #1, then I suggest you advocate that strongly to admissions. Otherwise, perhaps it would be wise to cut your losses and stop being bitter, and instead be happy with your other acceptances.

Both of you got accepted to top schools and should be absolutely proud of yourselves.

Sure, a waitlist/rejection will sting for awhile, but you guys (and others) have fantastic alternatives who want you.

@ Handala if anything you should be glad at getting into a great school Stanford

Personally, I received a likely letter from Yale, then got wait listed at Stanford, WASHU, and Emory, and accepted at Rice. I don’t think it’s Rice’s suspicious admission standards its simply the unpredictability of the college admissions process.

waitlisted at rice too…i thought i had a chance but no…im going to hope for the best! if you are not planning on going to rice in the end, please please please don’t put yourself on the waitlist!!! i really really want to go there but i guess i’ll have to wait!

handala92… if you gonna end up turning rice down if they accept u off the wait list, dont pursue it. there are others that actually want to go to rice (like me, i got waitlisted too). thats a really ****ty thing to do

@hotasice, can you tell me how do I send a strong signal to Rice Admissions that I want to get in? I had a really great Interview (lasted 3+ hrs) and the Alum sent me an email commending my candidature. Is she able to help in any way?

Waitlisted at Rice. I would have seriously considered attending, but I don’t think I can wait until July 1st to get a definite response back I hadn’t showed any interest because my parents weren’t willing to spend money for a plane ticket. It’s too bad but maybe it’s better that I didn’t visit since I could’ve become quite attached
I’ve already been accepted at UChicago, Northwestern, and Amherst, so maybe I’ll end up at one of these schools instead!
Waiting on Brown, Duke, Vandy, and Cornell now…
And I got waitlisted at WUSTL :/
