That’s cool. What kind of stuff do you write? I take fiction/poetry classes for my department but my senior thesis has ended up being a lot of nonfiction-- personal essays and stuff.

I havent had much time to write because of all my activities and sports and whatnot… but I took a creative writing course last year and wrote a bunch of stuff, mainly poems and short stories. I really like the essay that I wrote for CommonApp and think it may help my case a little bit.

That’s cool. Yeah I sort of adapted part of my thesis to be my CommonApp essay. So hopefully it’s good hahah

what was your thesis about?

Yea i think i might want to do a engineering/business double major. So Allison, do you want to go into writing too? and do you go to a private school? I’ve never heard of a high school requiring a senior thesis

Sorry about that, I was at work.

It’s a public school, but I had to audition to get in. I’m in the creative writing department, so to graduate I have to have to have a senior thesis and a senior reading. The reading’s going to be in April, at 7 on a friday night. It’s a big deal hahah. And my thesis is hard to explain-- essays and poems examining families and change. It sounds really lame but it makes more sense in the actual work.
And I’m interested in law and international studies. And writing, obviously hahah

sounds pretty sweet… what else is there to talk about to take our minds off of the wait?

Nate- My daughter is thinking of applying next year for engineering. Do you know anything about the program? Are you doing physics&eng, or chem&eng? Do you have any idea of how big the programs are? I just looked at the W&L common data set, and it said only 2% of the students are engineering majors. I’m afraid that wouldn’t be enough to justify offering some of the engineering classes. Seems like that would be about 8 juniors and 8 seniors - I guess if they all took the same basic engineering classes that would work. Any comment?

I have a greater interest in chemistry and engineering than the physics-based program, but I haven’t really made my decision about that yet. It does not surprise me that only 2% of the students are engineering majors either, as it is definitely not an engineering school. As for the class offerings, I know for a fact that W&L has many classes, especially as you get deeper into a major, that only have 3, 2, or sometimes even just 1 student in them.

At the same time, the program is not as extensive as it would be in a larger state school or a college with a greater focus on engineering. The reason for this is because W&L has a strong emphasis on the liberal arts, and that would be compromised if the engineering students were completely immersed in engineering because they’re trying to get a BS in just four years. My tentative plan is to get my BA from W&L (which is the highest they offer) and get my BS with a year of grad school somewhere else.

And this link on their website has some good insight on their philosophy regarding engineering:

aswagga… found a link that you may find very interesting…

hahah oh cool… if I don’t get in they’ll let my dad know early… hahah I guess that’ll be helpful. I just went downstairs and told my dad that if they call him saying I’m not in, he has to tell me ASAP so I don’t get my hopes up before I get my letter hahah

well also the attention they seem to give legacy applicants… haha yeah well hopefully that wont be neccesary!

hah yeahh that’s definitely a good thing. At least I know they won’t just ignore my application hahah.

right…and hey maybe you will hear back earlier if they contact your dad about you getting in!

I don’t know how it is for you guys, but whenever I tell someone I applied ED to Washington and Lee, most of the time they haven’t heard of it. Is that just because I’m in New England or do you guys get a similar response?

I hadn’t actually heard of it until like halfway through last year… but I get what you mean. However, whenever I tell people about it they seem to know it. My high school generally has 1-3 kids go there every year.

thaaaat would be nice hahah.

aswag, what about you?

Yeah, absolutely no one from my school has gone to W&L, but a lot of people at the school that I’m zoned for end up going there. So people in my neighborhood understand but people at my school don’t always.
