For any of the accepted students on the Class of 2016 Facebook group, could you check the Join Requests? Another classmate that got accepted and I asked to join but haven’t been added yet. Thanks! :)

Just have a couple questions:
How can you be over-qualified?
And how can you show interest in the school?

Cm2400, here are my totally speculations:

(1) No, there is no such thing as overqualified. You can have great test scores and amazing extra curriculars, but if you aren’t what a school is looking for in a given year or if there are too many applicants like you to fill the spots, then you will get rejected. You cannot be overqualified. To say an applicant is over qualified is to imply that there is an appropriate level of qualification and tthat you have exceeded it. As well pretty much all know, the college applications process is a crap shoot. Sometimes you get in, sometimes you don’t. Being “overqualified” is a fallacy that applicants make up to make themselves feel better when rejected from schools they feel are beneath them.

(2) Showing interest in a school is a little more difficult. Some schools keep track of the number of times you visit, or the number of times that you go an admissions session held in your local area. The easiest way to show interest, I would think, is to email the admissions counselor assigned to your region with a list of questions. Get a dialouge going that shows you want to know more about the school and the community that isn’t available on the website. If I were trying to show a school my interest, I would schedule an overnight visit and interview. Getting your face associated with your applicant is a great way to show your interest.

I hope that helps.

I was talking to a tour guide friend, and she said that admissions actually doesn’t care too much about your scores, a lot more importance is placed on the common app essay. I have a feeling that so called “overqualified” applicants with perfect scores and a million different extracurriculars may get burnt on this point, expecting their GPA to do the talking.
