Do not ride the firestorm of students who got waitlisted. Looking at your stats, you are overqualified but you still got in. That means they do not waitlist overqualified people. You must had somethin in your application, that made washu offer you a seat. There are some of you that were surprised that you got in. That just means you are being humble. Cheer up and celebrate. Then wait for the rest of your acceptance letters and decide. Hope you choose the best school for you and not because of what other whined about

Gender: F
Income Bracket: upper middle class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): … white female interested in engineering? I honestly don’t know…
Reflection
Strengths: Grades & SAT scores
Weaknesses: nothing really unique about me. I’m the girl next door with good grades and scores.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think my interview and visit to campus helped a lot - I showed ongoing interest
General Comments: Happy to be admitted! WUSTL is a great school and I am very honored!

My D was accepted and we were very happy for about 2 days. Now she has gotten her aid offer and it is about $2500 a year of work-study. Her father makes a good salary, but I didn’t think he made that much and he is not willing to pay full price. So sad! Does WUSTL give little aid usually or should we expect the same result from all schools? Worried now!!

Decision: Accepted

[] Essays: I wrote about learning to love learning and about learning to try new things at a program I attended this summer. I’d give it an 8.5/10. My short answer was about how much band means to me. I’d give it a 7.
[] Teacher Recommendation: My 11th grade history teacher’s is phenomenal. He said I was the hardest working student he’s ever had. My science teacher of 3 years wrote a preety good one. My math teacher’s was so-so.

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): I sent them the first chapter of a novel that I’m writing.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Writing, definitely. Lots of varying ECs.
[] Weaknesses: No AP Scores, Weaker courseload than some applicants (due to availability at my school)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really think the first chapter of my novel pushed me over the line between waitlisted and accepted. I’m a pretty strong writer.[/li][/ul]General Comments: Shocked that I got in, honestly. My best friend has almost identical stats as me but more ECs with more leadership positions (He’s Student Government President.), but he was waitlisted.

Decision: Accepted @ Olin Business

ACT: Did not take

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.5/4.5

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Nat Scholar in gr.10, 11; none major academics

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): International MUN Conference founder and Secretary General (700 del. participation), incorporated non-profit (+12 countries participation), prominent sponsors, keynote speakers, 60 volunteer staffs (60 hours/week volunteer) etc; Piano (14 years), international comp (8th place ranked), associate diploma from U of T, many state championship first places (sent sup. CDs to everywhere); MUN leadership multiple secretariat/staff postings; 3rd degree blackbelt, assistant master for 2 years; state debate championship awards (1st place, top 5, etc)

Job/Work Experience: Only volunteered.

Essays: MUN as common app, Taekwondo as extracurricular paragraph, additional info (about MUN and uni courses)

Teacher Recommendation: eng. and socials dept heads (should be good)

Counselor Rec: 10/10 (he showed me - many superlatives used XD) plus, he talked about thousands of dollars school’s financial sponsorship of the non-profit

Additional Rec: Piano teacher’s rec (sent to HPY)

Interview: Did not do interview with Washu

Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Political Economy
State (if domestic applicant): where polar bears and glaciers preside eh
Country (if international applicant): see above
School Type: private
Ethnicity: asian
Gender: male
Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): none

Reflection

Strengths: Scores and rigor fit the routine academic calibre; EC’s, as my uni counselor would say, “in a galaxy far far away”

Weaknesses: my mid-term report had 2 b’s out of 7 courses (due to 12 hours of MUN work per day - safe to say i’m already workaholic)

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: This is where it strikes me strange. Here’s my hypothetical ponderings: 1. I was accepted because I had unique extracurriculars that set me apart from other asians with the same academic calibre I had. (this is what I truly, truly hope). 2. I was accepted because Washu thought I would not go (or be accepted) to the higher ranking Ivies, and thus will end up at Washu (which, please excuse me if I offend anyone, would be a severe bummer - I worked my ass off because I want to end up in the Ives (and please no mischaracterization, i have enough reasons to wish going there)

General Comments: I am very happy to be accepted here (my first acceptance). I am waiting on 13 more. I was deferred from my dream university (hint: my name). Fellow CC’ers, let it be my paranoia, college admissions anxiety, but what are your views on the Tufts syndrome, and how does this play out in my case?

I did not have an interview nor a campus visit, and submitted my app on Dec 31st.

I’m getting really tired of a few comments. Guys, there is no such thing as being “over-qualified” for WUStL. It’s top notch, you’re either qualified or not, but never /too/ qualified.

It’s just a bogus thing that people console themselves with. (And I didn’t get in either.)

yeah i got a high sat score (2370) and got in so obviously they dont reject you just bc you’re “overqualified”

[] Strengths: Extracurriculars, scores
[] Weaknesses: Not enough demonstrated interest
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Interest level
[/ul]General Comments: Practically everyone else from my school was accepted, including people with much stronger applications and those with lower academics stats. For the sake of my ego, I’ll continue telling myself I didn’t get in because I missed the college meeting when Wash U visited my school…

If your aid is that low, then you ca count on very little aid from most select schools. we are full pay and our son was accepted- struggling at the reality of the price tag at all such schools. I must say though, if you as parents are willing to take on large debt- then you will find no better loan programs that the programs directly from Wash u. we saved for both our sons since they were babies. We saved enough to easily cover an in-state education for 4 years. we thought schools gave merit for some of the difference- we had no clue. It’s sad that it really is not a practical choice to pay close to 250K for an undergrad degree. who does that? you need to be a millionaire plus or make well below 100K to get aid as a discount. I don’t believe in entitlement either. The cost has simply gotten out of hand. not a good sustainable model except for a few at both ends of the income level. The middle class or really the upper middle class pays and pays for everyone else. and I grew up poor and worked two jobs to get through school. Just very bitter!

Hi–(I’m a college counselor without any students in the hunt for WUSTL this year–just curious) Did the waitlist letter include any information about the number of applicants/number of admits this year? I heard it was more competitive than ever…always seems to be the case, of course.

BTW, if there’s a place I’m supposed to find such stats on CC, please say the word and I’ll not be bothering you good students. I just can’t find it for Wash U.

Best regards to all of you. Go where you think you’ll be able to contribute the most. Remember that students are sometimes waitlisted out of concern for a college’s yield, so don’t let a WL letter deter you. If you’ve even managed to apply to WU, you can rest assured you’re smarter than I am. Go get 'em.

Hello,
Well, in my acceptance letter, it states: “This year we received over 27,000 applications for our freshman class of 1,500.”

Then again, only about 1/3 of the students accept the offer, so the percentage admitted is roughly the same as the percentage admitted last year.

There was also a short thread about this here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/washington-university-st-louis/1303193-acceptance-rate-plummeting.html</a></p>

General Comments: I don’t know, WashU was one of the schools I kind of expected to get into. I know it sounds arrogant, but I never thought I would be waitlisted. I don’t really understand how they made decisions the way they did because one girl at my school who is as close to Ivy caliber as you can get was also waitlisted but another much less qualified girl was accepted.

Very, very helpful, desktrokk! Thanks and congratulations!!
