Official Yale EA Decisions - Class of 2010

I'm still a junior...but the Yale Early admits at my school this year were crazy. 3/5 got in (which is below average for our school). 1 student got a 2390 SAT in one sitting/only took it once, and has one of the highest GPAs ever at our school...DEFERRED. Hispanic double legacy with 2250....DEFERRED. 2190 SAT/decent GPA, easy classes, no hooks...ACCEPTED. (the other 2 accepted were sports recruits)

That sucks - but that's life. Plus, Yale looks for more than just bookworms - were they involved in sports and stuff too? I got a 2190 and got accepted too, but my ACT was decent. Plus, I think that as long as you score 700+ in each SAT category, Yale doesn't really care for your cumulative. Basically, I think a 710 CR, 730 M, 750 W would look just as good as 730 CR, 760 M, 760 W to an admissions officer. Where do you attend?

Decision: DEFERRED

Stats:
SAT: 790 M, 770 CR, 760 W (2320)
SAT IIs: 800 Math II, 740 US History, 730 Chem, 690 Math I
GPA: 4.57 w, 4.0 uw
Rank: School doesn't rank
APs: US History and Psychology- 5s

Other stats: Varsity Field hockey 3 years, Volunteering 150-200 hours with disabled children each year, Dance for 4 years, Fencing for 4 years, French Honor Society 3 years (treasurer this year), National Honor Society 2 years, National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, Bloustein Scholarship Nomination (for kids in NJ, but I can't accept it because I'm not applying to schools in NJ), Eco Club 4 years, took Sustainable Animal Husbandry at Cornell this summer (got an A, I want to be a vet)... I know there's more, but I can't remember.
Subjective: I did two interviews, one on campus, one alumni. Alumni interview went very well, on-campus was okay.
Essays: Common App essay was great (about my volunteer job), optional was okay
Teacher Recs: both should be good
Counselor Rec: okay
Hook (if any): None...

Location/Person:
State or Country: NJ
School Type: #11 public school in state
Ethnicity: White
Gender: F

Other Factors:

General Comments: There were about twelve people applying to Yale EA from my school. One had double legacy (and I'm sure her grades were good). She was deferred. About 5 were National Merit Semifinalists (this doesn't mean much, I guess). All those were deferred or denied. One girl was accepted. She had very strong academics, her brother goes there, and she went to YSS.
I just don't know what to do with myself now.
I think I'm going to contact the field hockey coach, even though I'm not good enough to be recruited.

^ wow... your stats were GREAT... :( geez... it's like impossible to get in..

One thing we all should realize is that this is the largest number of kids ever to apply for college. 1957 was the peak of the first baby boom succeeded 30 years later by the second peak in 1987 and with more people qualified for college than in past generations. Other than Elon in N.C., where are the new large colleges to meet this demand?

from, mathman's mom

Each year, there are over 15,000 NMS Semi's,
and most of them apply to top colleges.
By itself, it's not enough as a major differentiator.

*Decision: Accepted *

[] Essays (subject and responses): I thought my essays were pretty cool. One was about going to camp and being in a room full of different people, each one introducing a different item from their home. The other one was about the beauty of the world and my introduction into space opera science fiction, the first feeling of a the rush of the future going through my mind (spaceships, planet colonization, etc.)

[] Strengths/Weaknesses:
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I think it’s because I seem real but at the same, optimistic. I really do feel that was my key, that my essays really showed a lot about who I was. They weren’t particularly awestricking, but I thought that the one about science fiction, in particular, got me in .
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Woohoo  First one ever to apply to an Ivy League from my school. Condolesences to all those who didn’t get in 

...dont forget urm.

What's URM? :(

under represented minority

Eh, I still say the only reason I even got in was because of my essays:

(And I really do feel bad for thsoe that didn't get in, I seem to have such low scores by comparison)

http://forums.utopiatemple.com/showthread.php?p=1399094#post1399094

Those are my essays.

ferny reyes - you have great essays and i think you "get" the entire concept of the personal college essay - not only does it show off your writing and story-telling skills, but you were also able to convey who you are through those stories.

a question, though.

is the "sometime" in this sentence from your second essay "Yet, sometime about its cover, a ship flying in space, called to me." supposed to be "something?" or am i missing some kind of meaningful nuance in this wording. if it is a typo, i think it just shows that a perfect essay isn't all about perfect writing mechanics.

and do you like orson scott card? he's my favorite author/favorite scifi author.

oh, and good job on getting into yale!

Great, it's a typo. :(

Thanks for the compliments though.
I mean, I had been hoping to get into Yale and I knew going into the process that my scores weren't the best. I logged in once and felt overwhelmed by the presecence of people who had had a chance to do much more than I ever had coming from right next to the border.

But instead, I decided to buckle down and just do what I had always been doing: hoping and striving and trying.

It worked out well :)

Yeah, I like my second essay. I like spaceships. ^_^

Edit: I like Card, but I would like him to keep his mouth shut :)

I just checked the TEA (Texas Education Agency) website. The Zapata School District, from which Ferny comes, is 78% economically disadvantaged and has a mean SAT score of 931. Ferny beat the odds at Zapata and he'll do the same at Yale. I expect great things from him. A heart felt congratulations!

Dallas mom

Thankies, btw. Yeah, my school is very iffy. There's open drug consumption, a disregard for any authority, and the town has a huge unemployment rate. We are also right next to the border, I'm used to hearing guns at awkward times of the night. But that's not important. There is hope with our class and one day, I hope to go back and help in some way to make our town a better place so that future children don't have to lose their parents to the influence of drugs.

Shoutout to my friends Joey, Ben and Jason: the three together probably form a basis of why I got into Yale. Joey, for teaching me it's okay to laugh. Ben, for teaching me it's okay to care about others, Jason, for teaching me I can't BS everything :)

congrats from another mom here. Yale did right by accepting you- you're a most worthy candidate. I wish you the best of luck.

Congratulations Ferny... and for goodness sakes, everybody, his scores aren't even low...

Go Ferny! I know a friend that had to\he same situation and went to yale and is now a really successful opthalmologist :)

Hey Ferny! What's up, man? Nice essays.

Aboo :) ^_^><
What's up man? Nothing much, being very impressed by scores :)
