Official Yale SCEA Decisions- Class of OHLEVEN ('11)

is the admitted student website up? what's on it- messageboard? facebook?

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] Fee Waiver Used?: nope. half a week's pay, right there.
[] SAT I (by section): didn't submit
[] SAT IIs: ditto
[] GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: 4.8 W / 4.0 UW (my school is pretty easy)
[] Rank: 2/130
[] ACT: 34 w/o writing (35R, 35E, 36S, 30M) and 32 w/ writing (34E, 35R, 28S, 32M)- even though Yale requires the ACT with writing, I submitted both
[] APs (including this year's):
Sophomore Year: US History (5)
Jr Year: Euro History (5), Calc AB (5)
This year: govt/comparative govt, statistics, environmental science (all three online b/c there aren't classes for me in those subjects at school), and language/composition
[] IBs (including this year's: n/a
[] Senior Yr Courseload: AP govt, AP Environ. science, AP stat, AP lang/comp, Advanced creative writing (double period), Advanced video cinema arts (double period- also happens to be the class where i got my yale decision!)
[] Number of Apps from Your School: Just me. we're not big on the ivies.
[li] Other stats (Awards, etc.): [/li]national scholastic art/writing gold award in novel writing (as part of the award, my novel is currently being edited for publication with scholastic)
two NFAA ARTS merit awards (writing and filmmaking)
national history day- 1st place (06), 2nd place (05), 3rd place (04)- and first in the state of CO all of those years.
some local poetry/essay contests
AP scholar (lol)
Natl Merit semifinalist

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Documentary filmmaking, independent creative writing (my awards section backs up these first two), gay straight alliance (president), literary magazine staff, amnesty international
[] Job/Work Experience: 20 hours/week at a drug store near my house
[li] Essays (subject and responses): my main common app one was about how a lot of my main interests (history, writing, social justice, etc) relate back to the first time I read To Kill a Mockingbird, and also how everything I do is really related to storytelling. I liked this one a lot.
[/li]

The yale supplement was about going to the telluride association summer program (TASP) this summer and how the experience affected me. not a great essay, but passable.
[] Teacher Recs: excellent- one of the teachers has had me for seven years. both were english teachers though, which worried me a little.
[] Counselor Rec: awful, awful, god awful. i mean, she didn't say anything terrible, she just made it very clear she didn't know me at all and was just making random characterizations that she pulled out of nowhere. also, there were a bunch of grammatical errors in it.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): she was a lawyer with the dept of labor, went to yale back in the '70s. The interview was okay. we talked a lot about local politics. I didn't get a great vibe from her though. it almost seemed like she didn't like yale that much?
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): well, i don't know if i'd call it a hook, but I did go to TASP. I've done a lot of independent research, though of the historical (not scientific) variety, that has landed me several documentary awards.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Colorado
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): public magnet (for the arts). I think our average ACT hovers right around 22 or 23.
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: the not-getting-any-financial-aid one
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): geographic location maybe? there were only 5 EA admits from my state.
[] Strengths: some national awards, clear passion for a few specific things, strong essays
[] Weaknesses: TEST SCORES OMG. I did not know a white, upper middle class female could be admitted to yale with a 32 on the ACT. seriously, that blows my mind.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: hard to say really, especially with soooo many amazing people being deferred/rejected. but i think it was because i showed a lot of passion and enthusiasm in my app (in addition to the normal good grades, teacher recs, etc. stuff)[/li][/ul]Other Factors: ?
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I am completely elated! I was not expecting this at all, and it feels great. I will almost certainly go to yale, though i'm applying a few other places, but now the pressure is totally off. and the outpouring i've gotten from friends and family has been incredible.

also, random, but three people from my TASP got into harvard EA, but i was the only one who did EA to Yale, so it looks like i'm going to be defending yale's honor alone!

I'm at a weird computer so I can't post S's stats but he was accepted. So unreal! Congrats to all others for 2011 and to the deferred -- you'll end up somewhere great!

WOOO vegangirl congratulations to you

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I GOT IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and do you want to know the ironic part? if i had started one of those ridiculous chances threads, people would have said probably not because i'm not a super applicant. but i do do what i love, love what i do, and LIVE MY LIFE FOR THINGS OTHER THAN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS, and i think THAT is what got me in! that's my reason. i'm not even going to bother posting stats, because stats don't matter. i think i got in because i love my life, and i clearly live it to do the things i love and the things i want to do, NOT the things i think yale will want to see. my app was probably somewhat atypical because my ec's were not their standard ivy-league-go-getter ones. but they were intellectual and passionate, and so am i, and i guess that's the kind of person yale wants at their school!!!!

oh my gosh. yale yale yale yale yale yale yale yale yale yale

i still can't process it. and i keep thinking they or i made a mistake.

oh my gosh

i didn't find out till 11:30 last night, because i had been at a dance at school, and then i screamed soooo loudly

i still can't believe it

but i cannot WAIT to meet all of my fellow admits at bulldog days!!!!!

I <3 Yale '11 already!!!

Welcome to Yale, everyone. I can't wait to meet you all next year! Yale is really an amazing place. For those of you who were deferred, you still have another chance. And those who were rejected, there are other schools just as wonderful as Yale (maybe even better, depending on the person...). CONGRATULATIONS!

[] Counselor Rec: I have no idea.. I hope it was good, but we got a new senior counselor this year.. (eek!)
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): His house, it went pretty well and had some common interests, but he talked about was how he didn't really use his time wisely at Yale and ended up not doing much with his life?

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]

[] Strengths: essays were pretty strong, great recommendations, come from a usually unrecognized area of Virginia, lots of leadership displayed
[] Weaknesses: I'm horrible at standardized testing, no national awards/research
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I'm probably in that middle 50%, and there are many other students with better stats than me but maybe not as many extracurriculars or job experience, etc., so they want to see what comes in with the RD pool.
[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
I am very grateful for not getting rejected, and wish the best of those who were accepted early! Hopefully many of us who were deferred have a good shot in RD.

[] Teacher Recs: Glowing
[] Counselor Rec: Glowing
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): His law firm. Felt okay, even though afterwards I had a really scary dream that he wrote to Yale saying I shouldn't be admitted. He was a history major and I want to be one too so we had a lot to talk about.
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): Big debate awards on the national level, being from an underrepresented state (Kansas)
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Kansas

[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: female
[] Income Bracket: very high
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): see above
[] Strengths: essays, ECs, being from KS
[] Weaknesses: my math scores (I was 100% positive that these alone would get me deferred, but I guess not)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Again, my essays, debate, and being from KS.[/li][/ul]Other Factors: yayyy yale
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I can't even begin to describe how happy I am. When I read the letter, I cried and cried and cried because I was so happy. I'm 98% sure I'm going there. I look forward to meeting all of you. For those of you who were deferred or rejected, don't let it get you down. Everyone knows that Yale admissions are incredibly subjective and that many of you were equally if not more qualified. And good luck in RD or with your other colleges!

Oh, and does anyone know anything about the DS program? I'm really interested in it -- I wrote something about it on my app, too.

i heard DS is direected suicide =(

me too, lol. but i'm still intrigued

[] Job/Work Experience: tennis instructor for two summers
[] Essays (subject and responses): 1. "my inner cheerleader": how, even though I lost a tennis match, I was able to cheer a teammate on to victory (essay demonstrates my writing style). 2. requisite embarrassing high school experience combined with 'why i don't get embarrassed easily' (shows my sense of humor as well as personal philosophy)
[] Teacher Recs: haven't read, will at end of year: 1. English teacher who encouragd my writing and nominated me for co-editor of school newspaper. 2. Chem teacher for two years who can attest to the fact that I worked hard for my grades in her classes even though I failed every quiz and generally hated that class.
[] Counselor Rec: haven't read, but we have a good relationship
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): it went well enough... a few awkward pauses, but we got going on a few subjects. I stressed how much I want to go to Yale, how the visit in April '06 immediately affected me, what I'd like to do there re: writing, etc.
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): don't have one?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: CA
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Catholic/parochial school of 704; in the past fifty years, it's gotten only one kid (out of 20 apps) into Yale :( Doesn't have the best relationship with East Coast schools
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: not sure atm...I live in Marin County, so upper-middle class
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none
[] Strengths: strong showing in English (taking two courses this year) and Spanish classes; show passion with consistent involvement in school newspaper, Darfur Action club, Peer Education group; well-traveled thanks to parents/grandparents (who are German); I'd like to think that I'm well-rounded, as I get good grades but also enjoy the 'high school experience' -- lots of friends in different groups, some boyfriends (not at the same time, of course :p), Homecoming princess
[] Weaknesses: SAT scores don't match grades; lower grades in math and science (admittedly, they're AP courses); not enough ECs?
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: see Weaknesses...also, my school doesn't have a good relationship with East Coast schools[/li][/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: A huge congrats to everyone!!!! You're all amazing people and definitely deserving of a spot in Yale '11. To those rejected, I'm really sorry; everything happens for a reason. To my fellow deferees: well, the same as I say to the rejected...but also, don't lose hope. We'll all end up at schools perfectly suited for us. I'm just glad that I've been able to celebrate/commiserate with everyone here. :)

wow... looks like lots of people got deferred...

61.4% of 3594 is around 2206 deferrals

[] Job/Work Experience: Lifeguarding and Babysitting
[] Essays (subject and responses):Common app essay--it was okay, about my trip to Germany and how I'm really determined but I didn't personally like it that much. Supplemental essay--I thought it was pretty good, about me being independent, but again, nothing outstanding.
[] Teacher Recs:One really awesome from a teacher I've had for three years for German. One pretty good as well from my sophomore chem teacher.
[] Counselor Rec:Eh, don't really know him, he doesn't really know me, but I guess it was alright.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location):Felt alright, about an hour long, and the guy's house (he was a doctor).
[] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.):First generation college student? Sucky area? Really focused on German it seems through my application?

Decision: Deferred

Stats:[ul]
[] Fee Waiver Used?: Nope
[] SAT I (by section): 790M / 760V / 720W (2270C)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Latin / 800 Math II / 770 Math I / 680 US Hist
[] GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: 4.79 W / 3.99 UW
[] Rank: My school doesn't rank officially, but my guidence counselor told me I'm #2
[] ACT: Didn't submit it
[] APs (including this year's): US Hist (5); English Lang (5); Latin Lit (5). This year-- US Gov, Physics, Calc BC, Stats, English Lit
[] IBs (including this year's: None
[] Senior Yr Courseload: As heavy as my guidence counselor would let me make it--the five APs listed above, plus an elective I was forced into.
[] Number of Apps from Your School: Three (all got deferred)
[li] Other stats (Awards, etc.): Dartmouth Book Award (11), NMS Semifinalist, Field Hockey League All-Star (this year), subject awards in practically every subject in 9th/10th (11th they mainly do the BAs), 2nd place in the Southern division of my Math League conference 2 years running, National Latin Exam Gold Medalist three years in a row, Girl Scout Silver Award (working on Gold), Art award last year, Math Team award all three years, various other academic/non-academic awards
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Math Team (Captain), Mock Trial (2 yr Captain), Alliance for Acceptance and Understanding (2 yr Co-President), Literary Magazine (2 year Secretary), NHS, AFS, Set Crew (for school plays), Model UN (Founder & President), Field Hockey (2 yrs Varsity), Tennis (Varisity 4 yrs), Basketball (2 years, managing another 2 years), Girl Scouts (since Kindergarten), Student Council (12th), School Council (10-12), NEASC Board (11th), Relay for Life Planning Committee (10th), Dollars for Scholars Class Rep (11+12), Peer Minister at my church (10-12), coaching Middle School Science Olympiad Team (10-12)
[] Job/Work Experience: This past summer, I ran a snack bar for a yacht club (6 hours a day, 6 days a week). Basically, I (along with two other girls) ran the place as our own business--we had an overseer, but not a boss--and I had to do all the cooking, cleaning, supplying, accounting, ordering, pricing, and every other detail involved in running your own business.
[] Essays (subject and responses): One was on how I was forced out of taking AP Chemistry last year and into a Ceramics class so that I could fulfill art requirements, and my teachers loved it. The other was about a nickname I've had since middle school, and in all honesty, wasn't too great--it's probably what kept me from getting in.
[] Teacher Recs: Two teachers who loved me.
[] Counselor Rec: Exactly what I -thought- I needed--she talked about my intense level of involvement in the school and community, and how I'm anything but one of those kids who gets involved in everything just to put it on my transcript. Essentially, she discussed how the only problem I had was that I simply didn't have enough time to do all the things I loved to do.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): Student interviewer--happened to be an EPE major (the exact major I wanted), so it went amazingly, and she was really encouraging/enthusiastic. Alumni interviewer--at a local library, and it was a bit odd. He asked me mainly about my stance on very controversial issues (War in Iraq, Stem Cell Research, Abortion, etc) and I felt obligated to tailor my responses a bit--he was a doctor and a Professor at Harvard, so my conservative stance on the issues probably wouldn't've gone over well.
[li] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): I thought it'd be Girl Scouts & my Gold Award. I talked about the Gold Award project I'm currently working on, which is an initiative to get my community more clued into the internet. Web Design is a huge hobby of mine, so I'm working with all the organizations and clubs in my community to help them set up web sites / learn how to use them to their organization's benefit. It also involves working with senior citizens and teaching them how to use computers.
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: MA
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Very small (but very elite) public school in a wealthy community. About 500 kids (130 in my class).
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: 100,000+
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Nothing for Yale, sadly. ><
[] Strengths: Well-rounded, top of my class, involved on all levels, dedicated
[] Weaknesses: My essay, the fact that I'm from a public school in MA that Yale seems to dislike
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: As much as it'd probably be fair to say it was my essay.. there's also the simple fact that Yale truly hates my school. No one has gotten in in six years--no one has even gotten wait-listed. Yes, that happens, but my school is also a school where it's not uncommon for 20 or more kids in a class of only 130 to end up at an Ivy/NESCAC/Other elite school. This year, THREE kids got into Harvard early, and yet all three Yale applicants got deferred.[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Oh, I got a B+ in Calc BC first term. First non-A grade EVER. ><
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Kinda wishing I'd applied to Harvard early (my GPA's higher than two of the three that got in), even though Yale is my absolute favorite school by far. Congrats to everyone that did get in, though! And hopefully the rate for accepted deferred students is higher than the 10% I hear it's rumored to be...
