I have been accepted to Oglethorpe and Morehouse universities. I'm gonna be in Pre-Med whichever way but I don't know which one I should go to. Can anybody help??? Are there any students from one of these schools that's actually in pre-med that can tell me what its like? Any help/advice would be awesome

Between the two schools, Morehouse definitely wins hands downs in terms of name recognition adn recruitment in the work place and grad/professional programs (morehouse even has their own school of medicine). In addition Morehouse is part of the Atlanta University Center
where you will be able to cross register at Spelman. as well as number of joint degree programs.

Have you visited either campus? That would be a start. I think the assets of either place should be clear to you; Oglethorpe University is a small liberal arts college that likely attracts students who prefer the 'classical' education. While Morehouse is also a small college, it's offerings are a bit more broad than Oglethorpe. Of course, Morehouse has a longstanding reputation as a HBCU that greatly motivates its students and gets the best out of them. By the way, don't make your decision based on any hopes of attending Morehouse Medical College. One doesn't depend upon the other.

If I were you I would make my decision based on feel and comfort. Morehouse does have a reputation for 'sink or swim,' and I am bothered by their historically high attrition rate and the value the school places on conformity in the atitudes and beliefs of the student body. Other Morehouse flaws, namely the bureaucracy of the college administration, is present at many schools, good, bad and indiferent.

One element that Morehouse can offer that Oglethorpe can't is access to a network of academic and financial assistance for science and pre-medicine majors that are designated for 'underepresented minority students.'

I think you should visit both schools to get a sense of how you would fit in. Although, Morehouse has the rep. of having "red tape" and etc it is a great school that academically challenges its students. Even though Morehouse is a HBCU, I know people personally who attend Morehouse that are going to top tier professional/med. schools. Also, at Morehouse there is an opportunity to take classes at some nearby colleges so you can interact with other people rather than your Morehouse brothers. I really do not know much about Oglethorpe but I do know at Morehouse during Orientation you get a Spelman sister who throughout your four years, both of you can confide in each other. Morehouse is an insitution that is centered around community, brotherhood, and sisterhood. At Morehouse you will have the opportunity to be with other African Americans ( if you are an African American) or minorities that take education seriously and who will excel in society.
I know many HBCUS get lots neg. comments about their process and whatnot but these schools really do prepare students as well as many top lac schools. I really do hope you consider Morehouse and its many opportunities, as well as Oglethorpe. You wont be making a mistake choosing from both of them!

Folks turn down HYP for Morehouse all the time. I can't think of a single case where I have heard that happening for Oglethorpe.

I don't know anything about these schools, but I would just like to state that Oglethorpe has a far, far cooler name.

I have to say one thing. I used to be a recruiter for a high-powered company, and we only recruited students from a few schools - namely the Ivy league. There were, however, two exceptions. We also recruited from Morehouse and Spellman.

Morehouse has an excellent reputation with employers and graduate schools. Their students are in high demand.

So, unless Oglethorpe has a special appeal for you, I'd say that you should seriously consider Morehouse.
