Spelman vs Indiana @ Bloomington

I got accepted to both of their colleges and was wondering what were the pros and cons of both institutions. Financially they are both giving me the same money and cost about the same ( Spelman is a little bit more expensive). Also, I got into both of their honors programs. I plan on majoring in Psych with a Biology concetration ( pre-med). If any of you know anything about both institutions that will be very helpful. Thanks

go to spelman if you want a southern black experience! they have an excellent program in conjunction with morehouse school if medicine..if thats the direction ur heading! If u don't want the all black souther experience, go to Indiana..although i haven't heard much about their psych or bio programs.
Good Luck with your decision!!!

I would do Indiana's Honors College.

The only thing I know about Spelman is that the Commy Author Howard Zinn taught there. So I suppose that would be a pro or con, but it would depend on your beliefs.

hmmm, I visited Spelman in the fall and what turned me off was the fact that the campus was not as nice as I would have wanted (the dorm rooms were small and only a few had air conditioning and they had community bathrooms that were absolutely appalling). it also seemed to me that Spelman was too much of a party school for me. (the area code that spelman is in has the highest incidence of AIDS in the country). i also sat in on an english class and they were discussing a book i read in my freshman english class in high school, so i'm not sure about the curriculum difficulty.

but on the flip side, spelman is one of the best places for black pre-med concentrators. it has an excellent placement record into med school, etc...

Hotpiece, you need to narrow your focus. While it is true that some of the immediate neighborhood surrounding Spelman has it share of social malady such as AIDS, I don't think you'll find that Spelman and the AIDS problem in Atlanta have much of a connection.

And there are plenty of "nerds" to be found at Spelman, so parties wouldn't consume all of a underclasswoman's time. LOL. Yes, the dorms are not spacious and some don't have air conditioning. But students are only on campus from September to May, when the climate in north Georgia is typically gorgeous and mild.

Hey, Indiana-Bloomington is a great place too. Strong in Biology and Music. Pretty campus. Fine overall reputation, particularly in the urban Midwest; Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis.

Lake Washington, the OP asked for cons and I gave her cons. and, when i went to Spelman in September and then again in April, it was far worse than "gorgeous and mild." maybe it was atypical, but i found the weather to be really hot and humid. but whateves.

Spelman is a great, great school. I seriously considered it myself when I was a junior. I applied and got the Presidential Scholarship (tantamount to a full ride), but no one ever told me about the dorms and the incidence of sexual activity around the campus, that is until I visited and an upperclassmen told me that Spelman, Clark-Atlanta, and Morehouse are well known in Atlanta for being hook-up schools. but you know, that was just my experience.

i don't know, but for me, the campus was a big factor in deciding what school to attend. i hate cramp spaces and the idea of a community bathroom disgusts me, but that's just me. maybe the OP is not as germophobic as I...

The only thing I know about Spelman is that the Commy Author Howard Zinn taught there. So I suppose that would be a pro or con, but it would depend on your beliefs.

Howard Zinn isn't a communist

He's not a true communist. However, I recently watched a documentary on him and he has some communist ties/won a communist book award. I don't like Howard Zinn regardless.

Then I guess you hate Boston University since he taught there for 14 years.

BTW, I like Howard Zinn especially his book on SNCC, The New Abolitionists

Haha, I don't HATE Zinn, I just don't think of him as a historian. He's way too slanted. IMO he's like Michael Moore. Very interesting, intelligent, but has too much of an agenda. He's interesting and I like to read his works, but he is delusional if he considers himself a historian.

Lol @ germophobic

Thanks for the pros/cons everyone

Also about the whole "hookup" situation yes that is true but I'm not even goin' to attend Spelman for that. Too much is on the line just to mess around in school. Congrats on you attendin' Harvard @ hott

oh, thanks pristine. but yeah, i really loved Spelman besides the dirty campus and the "hookup" scene. it was definitely a close number 3 behind Harvard and Columbia. I'm sure if I had attended i would have somehow gotten over the germs and still managed to have a great college experience.

Spelman has a good rep in Atlanta, so if you want to work in the South I would choose Spelman.
