"...since the path is clearly for a lucrative profession that will pay back the loans? If my kids would only want to be doctors, I'd be glad because I'd assume the loans would pay themselves back by the time they are 40 anyway."

Not neccessarily; while I payed off my med school loans awhile ago, H is 45 and still paying. We will be paying my D's school and H school loans at the same time!

Thank you all for the responses. They are all very thought provoking and have helped me very much.

To answer a question or two: She has applied and been accepted to all the colleges she has applied to except NC State she has not heard from yet as they don't send their acceptances until the end of this month. I imagine she will be accepted there. She applied to 3 in state universities (unc-w, unc-chapel hill, NC State) as well as Campbell and 2 other out of state Christian colleges. She was accepted to all. Chapel Hill and Campbell are her top choices. I feel she would have been accepted to DUKE, but she chose not to apply as the tuition is 40K a year and she did not want to put that kind of hardship on the family or take on that much loan and we do not qualify for financial aid.

My daughter is very bright and she needs to be academically challenged or she gets bored. I want to send her to the right college and I, personally feel that UNC-Chapel Hill would fit the bill very nicely. Hopefully, it will all work out and she will attend the best place for her.
