Oh No What Do I Do Now?!?!

When I asked my dad if I was going to apply for financial aid, he responded probably not and told me to check the "I do not plan on applying for financial aid" box on all of my applications. Just recently he decided that he would in fact apply, but now I realize that out of the 10 colleges I applied to, a bunch had special financial aid forms due on January 1st, like UPenn and Cornell. In addition, schools like Yale say "All applicants applying for financial aid must answer "Yes" to the financial aid question on page 1 of the Common Application."

My dad is going to be insanely mad that I didn't stay on top of things and missed all these deadlines, and I'm freaking out here because even if I get all this stuff in right away, it's still very late. WHAT DO I DO NOW? Do I call all the colleges and explain to them what happened? Will they accept my financial aid apps at all? HELP!

I have not gone through this, but my first reaction is to make the phone calls right away & explain your problem. You will have to confront it sometime. The sooner, the better.

What I recommend is that your father call these schools because it was he, not you, who caused the "I do not plan to apply" box to be checked as it was. Your father should not be "insanely mad", because there was no need for you to "stay on top" of something that was not going to happen in the first place.

Now, just stay calm. Your dad needs to find out if there is a way to get a financial extension or workaround. If there are special or extenuating circumstances then he should bring them out in discussions with the finaid people.

Perhaps, a better way for this to have played out would have been to have always checked YES to the finaid desired question, because you can always decline finaid more easily than you can add it on later.

Good luck.

Thanks for your "sage" advice ;)

Well he didn't yell too loud...just blamed me for procrastinating and not taking care of business as usual. I'm going to call up all the schools tomorrow and beg them to consider me and change my "no" to a "yes". How come I have this terrible feeling I'm going to end up at UConn? :)

I think they'll do it...if a school wants you, they're not going to turn you away over a miscommunication over financial aid.

People in adcom seen it all so your problem won't be first.
You might not get best package you could have if you applied on time but you still get something. Now it is not too late.
