Oh shoot!

So yesterday at 11:00PM I went to submit my completed Johns Hopkins
University application which was due at 12:00AM. I assumed that JHU
like all the other universities I applied to would allow for two
letters of recommendations so when I proceeded to add my teachers
recommendation, I just added them in alphabetical order.
HOWEVER, the first teacher I added was my English teacher's
recommendation letter and once I added it, I COULD NOT add any more
and I could NOT remove it no matter what I tried. I struggled for the
whole hour trying to contact someone for help but no one was
available. I'm Applying to JHU for a Biology or Biomolecular
engineering, I would have preferred to give my science recommendation.
This whole situation is extremely frustrating to me. What should I
do? I know JHU is adamant about only receiving one letter of
recommendation and I do not want to sound careless since it was the
common app that did not allow me to remove my recommender even BEFORE
i submitted. I know my English teacher's recommendation could not
have been bad but do you think handing that one in to JHU will hurt my
chances? Or maybe sending my English teacher recomendation so will
show I am a more well rounded person and i should just leave it as it
is. Please help! I don't really know what to do.

first of all.. I had no idea about JHU being adamant about just one recommendation. So that's something to look into for S come Monday. Second: How is it that you have your recommendations? All of S's are sent by the school and.or teacher writing it. He has no idea what any of his recommendations say, but assumes they are good things.

Just checked the website. I suggest you snail mail the second recommendation as it says that supplementary materials are welcome. Not sure how this fits now that it is past the deadline so to speak, but another teacher rec is not going to put you on the naughty list as far as I can tell from the FAQ's under admission.

Madadunn, I have no idea what you're talking about. And since you obviously didn't know that the Common app has all the teacher recommendations already in them, I don't think you can help much. And I've talked to ppl who have said that there is a reason John Hopkins only asks for ONE recommendation. And how can I not assume my english recommendation was good, I never said they were superb or anything, just that they wouldn't be bad. So any actual suggestions would be helpful. thanks

okay thanks, but the only problem now is, that it's after the deadline... still anything i should do?

Stumbled across this, and since I helped an acquaintance with sorting out application requirements, I remembered reading the following on the JHU website -

Recommendation Letters
Hopkins requires a recommendation letter from your secondary school counselor and from one teacher/instructor. Although we require only one recommendation from a recent instructor, we welcome additional letters and encourage the submission of two two teacher/instructor recommendations.

Why not simply submit another letter of recommendation directly to admissions to be added to your application package?

Yes, I know the common application has the teacher recommendations on them, but I also know it is NOT common for students to have access to to these and they are TYPICALLY sent off site.

It says on the website to contact your area representative if you have questions or concerns. This is what I think you should do. They might not be in the office today, and is why I originally said that the one recommendation rule that you mentioned should be something my son looks into come Monday.

From everything I've heard, MOST schools welcome things that will add to your application or otherwise differentiate you from the general pool of applicants.

once again, I can still do this after my deadline? If not, leave it alone?

My inclination would be to go ahead and supplement after the deadline.

im just afraid of a penalty :(

Post #6 just showed you that there is no penalty for submitting more than one letter of recommendation from teachers.
I just submitted both of my teacher recs to all of the schools that I applied to regardless of whether they required 2 recs or one rec

btw, where on the application did you have to write which teachers would be writing you a recommendation b/c i just looked through the common application and could not find one?

What penalty? The website seems to encourage more than one rec - they are not looking for ways to penalize you. It's good to be rule oriented, but don't be paranoid. Send the rec you want from the teacher you want - worst case scenario is that it doesn't get read. Better than that - call admissions and tell them you submitted one rec through the common app and would like to submit another one and ask the best way to make sure it gets in your package. They are there to help with applications - not hinder them.

If you think the recommendation will help enhance your application, then send it--if it's redundant, don't. In this case, I think you've made it clear that you think it'll add to what JHU may think of you, so I suggest you mail it/fax it. Also, if all the required things are in by the deadline, anything that is out of your hands (school forms like transcripts, recommendations, etc.) can arrive a little after deadline (I was told 2 weeks for another college.) NBD.

I know JHU is adamant about only receiving one letter of recommendation...

Absolutely not true. No where do we state this. Our official letter of recommendation policy is:

All applicants to Johns Hopkins University are required to have one letter of recommendation from their guidance or college counselor. This should accompany the secondary school report and high school transcript. All applicants are also required to have a second letter of recommendation from an academic teacher. Applicants may submit additional letters of recommendation but we request students not submit more than four total letters of recommendation. Additional letters of recommendation can come from anyone, including another teacher, extracurricular advisor, coach, boss, etc. Supplemental recommendations do not require an evaluation form.

(If you had just searched a bit on the JHU Admissions site, the Hopkins Forums, or old CC discussion threads you would have found that answer.)

What should I do?

Have your letter of recommendation sent in as soon as possible by your recommendation provider. Request that they include a cover letter explaining why the letter is being sent after the application deadline. Make sure this is done prior to Jan. 15.
