Hi, I am a student at a California Community College. I just completed my first year here with a 3.9. My high school grades and sat scores are nowhere near impressive. I need help choosing schools to apply to next year. I am a sociology major. I would do best in a small to medium sized school. I am open to all parts of the country, but I definitely want a beautiful campus. I would like a tight knit school with a lot going on on campus. Any suggestions?

based on your gpa, major(the ones i listed have excellent sociology departments), and preferences, i'd suggest...

safeties:

ucsb
ucsd
indiana u-bloomington
u wisconsin-madison

unc-chapel hill
ucla
u michigan

reaches/matches:

stanford
berkeley
u chicago

i recomend UCLA and SB. Both beautiful campuses,

Those are huge campuses. This person is looking for a small campus...

yea but they have the active greek systems and great business schools. anyways thats why i put em down as safeties too.

safeties:

NC State, Occidental College, San Diego State Univ, UC Santa Barbara

UCLA, CAL, Pepperdine, USC, UC San Diego, U Maryland, U Florida

Reaches:

U of Virginia, Duke, Stanford, Yale, Swarthmore, Princeton

would it be wise to apply to san diego state with a 3.9 GPA? talk about a sick safety.

how can this person go to stanford if she has weak HS stats and low SATs?

im in a similar position as far as stats, good CC bad HS. i really would like to go to stanford but ruled it out because people have been telling me my SATs are too low to be consdiered.

Small to medium? You should maybe try a liberal arts school. Also, Columbia is actually pretty small - the campus is 36 acres. I would say UPenn, with about 250 acres, is a medium sized school but some people might disagree. I love Penn's campus, BTW. I live pretty close to it. Brown is not a huge school with a campus that is about 140 acres. But yeah, try looking at liberal arts schools and toss a couple of those into your search. :)

CC2UC, FYI, there's a thread about transferring with a crappy hs GPA. I was pretty surprised but it can happen. These people are going to UPenn, G-town, and even Yale after completing 1 year at some other college. It's pretty amazing.

If you really want to go to Stanford, I'd urge you to apply if you've got excellent CC grades.

xhohosntwinkiesx... wouldnt i still need to retake the SAT?

You probably should...what is your SAT? You could also try the ACT. I didn't bother with the SAT and took the ACT instead. I got a 33/36. That converts to a 1460-1500. However, it has been proven that people generally score higher on the ACT too. Like...I know someone who was ranked 3/350 and was obviously bright. 1200 on the SAT and then a 34 on the ACT.

thanks twinkies.. i just called stanford, im gonna go there hopefully sometime this week to speak with a counselor. i need to get all the specifics and if need be begin studying for SAT's!! and... SAT2's.... thanks for hte tip about ACTs, i will look into that. however, with the new SAT that divide between ACT->(old) SAT may be gone.

You would think so. But...the ACT now has a writing section. woot

Good luck with getting into your dream school!
