My son is interested in both schools…which computer engineering program best? OSU combines comp eng degree with electrical eng degree. Pros/cons? Also concerned that after freshman year will get closed out of that degree track at OSU…had friend whose daughter who did not get into her chosen biomedical engineering at OSU and had to choose other. Northwestern has said they never cap once admitted to school of engineering so always get your choice. Any input appreciated…pls disregard college cost in your reply
I’m sorry I don’t know a lot about engineering, but the biomedical engineering is extremely competitive at Osu and requires a significantly higher gpa than the other disciplines. If you go to osu’s r e d d i t page, a lot of people will know about the cse program. Good luck
I feel Northwestern is overall stronger engineering school and overall stronger school, for those who can be accepted and can afford the school. The student body is superior and faculty to student ratio is vastly different than Ohio State.
You mentioned:

OSU runs electrical engineering and computer engineering programs as electric and computer options, respectively within one ECE degree (ECE is also the name of the department). This has been done, as far as I can tell, to simplify some of the approval processes from Board of Regents. ECE-computer option is the same as computer engineering degree from other schools in its contents. In fact, computer engineering degree programs at any school are created by requiring some of the basic electrical engineering classes, some of the computer science classes, and then adding couple of computer architecture and VLSI classes .
Go w/ NU
Thank you, can you give me some reasons why you feel that way?
Thank you very much!
Thank you that’s very helpful
Then why does he have his mom asking questions? Is this actually his decision to make?
^^^I had no idea parents weren’t allowed to ask questions! Good to know.
At OSU, every engineering student does have to apply to their major. I can see why that can be viewed as a negative.
BME at OSU is much more competitive than ECE. ECE requires that you’ve taken the core classes and met the GPA requirements.

On the other hand, BME requires:

That is a huge advantage - it’s nice not to go through your freshman year with the pressure of not knowing whether you’ll get into your major or not. I’d go with NU on the strength of that alone. On top of it, NU has a higher reputation in engineering than OSU.
