With the ending of early action decisions being released, I thought it was necessary to create a thread for everyone that was deferred to discuss the deferral process including decision results and where to go from here
Yeah I have lots of questions, like what are our chances and when will we hear?
I’m wondering that as well. Also I was curious whether in-state applicants have a possibly better chance of being accepted than someone out of state? I’m in-state and I got deferred this past Friday with a 23 ACT and 3.8 GPA.
I got deferred and I have a 30 ACT and 4.0 GPA with amazing extra curriculars. I am out of state however many I know have grades lower than mine and got in. Not to mention I qualified for the buckeye scholarship
@Sunandstars - hang in there…
Son deferred OOS here too, 31 ACT, 3.88 uw/4.4w, linguistics, legacy (grandfather). Not his top choice, but is still interested.
Son deferred at Ohio State Engineering. wGPA 4.2, 3 AP courses (4’s on AP tests), 13 Honors level courses, 1250 SAT, 4 years band, 4-years Varsity Ice Hockey (All division defense), 4 Years Varsity Baseball, NHS, Math Honors, French Honors, Many EC’s, great essays and Rec’s, 2 years working at job. Already accepted for Engineering at Penn State, CU Boulder; awaiting RD at Michigan and UMass Amherst. Good luck to all. Just waiting them all out now to determine pros/cons/costs/awards/ etc.
Decisions for deferral come out around march I think.
I got deferred as well. I have a 23 on the ACT, but I had an extra recommendation attached to my transcript from my counselor that discussed how my scores do not reflect my ability as a student. I had another two great recommendations. My GPA is 4.1W. Took 3 AP classes, treasurer of NHS, student council representative, mission trip to Africa, was chosen to be in a pre-doctor like club called osteoscholars, played varsity lacrosse for all 4 years, and more random activities. My dad is an alumni at osu’s medical school. I was told my essay was outstanding by many of my English teachers. So at this point I think it is my test scores that are holding me back. By the way I’m from Michigan…
Go Bucks!
I got deferred a few Fridays ago… In-state with a 3.85 GPA and a 31 on the ACT. I am a varsity athlete, member of a community service club at my high school, have had a job all throughout high school, and I mentor Freshman at my school. Wondering if anyone knows anything similar about kids who got deferred and how the ended up. OSU is my first choice. Curious if anyone would have any guesses as to how I end up. Thanks.
@cle2450 What is your intended major?
I applied to the college of business, with my intended major being accounting. I was accepted into Smeal School of Business at Penn State and Farmer School of Business at Miami (OH)
@cle2450 - congrats on solid options…should be fine, just need to wait it out as others explore other options. You didnt like Miami?
@cle2450 agree with DG that you have two very good options. Fisher is likely one of the capacity controlled majors. From the most recent weekly report, it appears that fisher had a 13% increase in apps this year. It appears that so far this year they have admitted 600 fewer students to Fisher, but last year they admitted about that many more than The previous year (so the target this year maybe be smaller than last year’s). Your stats are really strong, so surprised you were deferred. But It doesn’t appear they will be looking to add a lot more into Fisher unless they get an unexpectedly low yield rate. I am no expert on how that fluctuates each year. I wish I had happier info for you, but you will have to hope for the best here.
I just got off the phone with a friend whose son is transferring into Fisher after one year at a different state school. I know that seems unimaginable to you, but that is extremely common at OSU. Many, many transfer students. Miami is fabulous, but is a very different experience (which many just love) from OSU. Penn State is likely closer to OSU in terms of fit. My oldest graduated from Fisher and is now finishing an MBA at an M7 school, so that is one data point that Fisher is quite strong. He was really pleased and did great in the job market in-between OSU and grad school.
Hang in there! Regardless, you are very fortunate in the choices you do have. Many, many kids are not sitting That pretty!
@cypresspat - thanks for the feedback, what other undergrad business programs did your son consider? Am down to IU and OSU, direct admit at both, seeing Fisher again next week for their visit day.
This was a while ago (10 years). I recall he was considering Miami and Fordham and desperately waiting to hear from OSU. I think he was leaning towards Miami but when he got into OSU, he grabbed it. He speaks very highly of it. He worked for 5 years before starting b-school at an M7. (Now THAT was a brutal admission process). He graduates in June and has had his job lined up for over a year. But he will always be a Buckeye!
Son was deferred and just accepted tonight. OOS, Linguistics
Also deferred and accepted this evening. OOS Business
Deferred and accepted this evening into business OOS
@mcc1970 how do you known if you were accepted for business?
