I checked the status of my Ohio State application, and saw that I had been “deferred”.
I have a 3.5W GPA in almost entirely honors/AP classes, a 2080 SAT I (1410 composite) single sitting, along with plenty of ECs and auditioned musical groups. I suspect that I was deferred due to my lower GPA and because I applied in the middle of December as a mechanical engineering major, which is after the early action deadline.
On the Ohio State admissions website it states that all engineering majors should apply by the early action deadline, which I foolishly did not. What does this “deferred” status really mean, should I be worried, and what can I do about it?
You can chat with your GC to see if thete’s snything you can do. Maybe s/he can find out how rigid that EA deadline for engineering majors is. Do you have safeties lined up?
Deferred status means they will keep your application on file and review it after receiving other apps that are received by the 2/1 date. My son was also deferred after applying in October for Computer Enginerring. We were told we may not hear a new decision till sometime in March
My son was also deferred applying for Electrical/Computer Engineering in mid October. Some of his friends that were deferred have already heard. My son and another friend haven’t yet. Not sure what department the others were applying for though.
Just checked my OSU status and I’m deferred as well. CS major. What exactly does this mean and is there anything that I can/should do? I applied in early January.
I applied for engineering on December 12 with similar stats and I was accepted. I did have extensive service projects and I was a varsity athlete for 4 years so that may have helped me.
Not sure what OSU is looking for. My son was also a varsity athlete for 4 years with 10 years in 4-H and other school clubs and volunteer work in the community. Along with a 29 on his ACT and a decent GPA with AP courses. At this point he has still not heard a yay or a nay from OSU.
@KR1997, I’m not really sure. I know one takes most same courses as my son. The other two there are maybe 2 AP courses. Two are 4 year varsity athletes and I think all three are on NHS. I really think it depends on what major you’re taking too.
@KR1997 I was deferred also and have not heard back. I also know of 4 other people who have been deferred and haven’t heard back either, which makes sense since they review the deferred applications in March typically.
@KR1997, like I had said earlier somewhere possibly in the link that 2 heard a while back. One was a no go and the other was accepted. Not sure what their majors were. I do know 1 person who was accepted into the engineering program, but I don’t think he is going to go toOSU. He will be attending UC.
I’m in the same situation. I applied in January and heard back that I’d been deferred, so I called and asked if there was anything I could do. I decided to send a midyear report since I got a 4.5 gpa for my second quarter so my year to date is a 4.4, do you think that will help me out? OSU is my top choice and I’m dying to get in.
A lot of solid applicants get deferred. At least when I was applying to OSU, deferrals were handled on a rolling basis (i.e. at any time someone could be accepted). If you are proactive you still have a solid shot.
@JakeT501 I was deferred and was told that I should not send a letter after being deferred because it would not be read. I did send in my midterm transcript and they also said everyone will find out at the same time mid March! Hopefully they accepted a lot of us that are deferred
I called the office of admissions, and I aksed if I should send a midyear report. She said it wouldn’t hurt to do so, and we got in contact with my advisor (I think that’s what they’re called), and she was really nice and said they would wait to review my info until after they received my updated grades. So it wouldn’t hurt to give them a call and just double check! Who knows it might end up helping im really hoping it does
The admissions officer at OSU told us that new updated transcripts and any new letters would be put in his file for the admissions people to see. Good luck to all.
