Ohio State NMF availability

Does anyone have any idea how many NMF half tuition awards that OSU has?

It makes a huge impact on our decision, but we can get no definite answer. If they "run out" of NMF awards, then we would rather be somewhere else. Do they run out?

In the past years, OSU has had over 100 NMF attend. Do they really have that many awards?

Thanks for any guidance!

Penney

Why not just apply to a few schools that give NMF scholarships so that if OSU doesn’t work out, you’ll have other NMF options.

How much is the OSU NMF scholarship for?

It’s the NMF offer that pushes OSU to the final list. If no NMF, then OSU is almost the same price as Case Western - her first choice.

Ahhh…

Is your D a junior?

If she is, I would still have her apply to a few big NMF schools…kids change their minds during senior year and it’s good to have choices.

onecent…One other thing to consider with OSU’s NMF scholarship is how they would incorporate any other merit scholarships your D would receive. From the OSU website: “The amount of any other university-wide merit scholarships awarded to a Distinguished Scholar will be included in the Distinguished Scholarship”. There has been quite a bit of discussion and confusion (including conflicting information from OSU FA office directly) about whether or not they would “stack” other scholarships or roll them into the value of the Distinguished Scholar (currently about $4863). I’d strongly recommend trying to get a firm answer before committing one way or the other.

So, is the OSU NMF scholarship for about $4900? Is that the cost of instate tuition? or is the instate tuition more?

^mom2…The Distinguished Scholarship (the unofficial OSU NMF award) is for half IS tuition (about $4863 currently). They, like many other universities, also have the official college sponsored NMSC scholarship valued at $1K-2K per year for 4 years (anything above $1K per year based on financial need).

onecent…I’m guessing from your first post you’re aware that neither of these scholarships is guaranteed for NMF’s. They’re both listed as “will be considered” or “given priority consideration”, and the Distinguished also requires top 10% class rank. Hopefully you’ll be able to maximize NM money from OSU and be able to do a solid comparison with Case Western. Good Luck to you and your D!!

We have confirmed that the scholarships that OSU can be stacked (one for merit, one for music, and NMF) but Wolverine is right that they do not guarantee the NMF.

OSU gives us the impression that it is a first-come, space-available basis. They will not say how many spaces are available or if some were turned down in past years. I sounds like they have kept that info closely guarded.

Daughter is a senior, and has until tomorrow to put her “first choice school” for NMF - as that is the date she would lose her Case scholarships.

I’m a bit frustrated because I feel like I’m making a commitment to buy a small house, but no one is able to tell me how much it will cost. Just that I’d better hurry or I might lose out on this “deal”. I’ve heard that at car dealerships and furniture stores, but I didn’t expect it for college.

Thanks for the replies, any more thoughts are appreciated!

^Wow…that really stinks!! If the $20K-ish difference is affordable for you it sounds like Case Western is where her heart is. Given our experiences this college app season with scholarships offers/invites I’d be hard pressed to count on anything that they won’t put in writing before important decision dates arrive. God Bless the University of Minnesota and their straightforward approach to NMF scholarships!! I don’t envy you the decision you need to make tonight, but I do wish you and your D all the best. Whichever school she attends will be the better for it.

I hope that you will come back and post your end result. My dd has a good chance of being a national merit finalist for the class of 2012 and she is interested in both OSU and Case.
Best of luck to you and your student!

*

What is the Case NMF scholarship?

Case is also vague about any NMF offer, but they said anywhere between $500-$2000 per year. BUT, they start pulling names of students that have Case listed as their first choice school today, April 15th and start awarding. I don’t really think it’s necessarily the first people who get the higher money, but they did say a limited number were available. We just looked at any NMF $$$ from Case as icing on a cake - didn’t really incorporate into any money decisions.

My daughter opted for Case! It boiled down that OSU and Case were $8000 apart, and much less if OSU didn’t come through with the $4500 NMF. She didn’t want to be stuck at her second choice for a difference of $3500/year.

She also hates making decisions; she has researched, visited, auditioned, agonized over this. Now, I think she is glad it’s over and is ready to move ahead and get excited about it!

She will love Case.
