@israelifun Thank you. Which scholars group do you belong to? What is your major? Is the scholars workload heavy?
@STEM2017 I’m an international affairs scholar and a political science/public policy major. The scholars workload is really a chose your own adventure in that there are minimum requirements but you can put in a lot more. For my group we need 20 arbitrary points a semester (points are through different campus events relating to the program or put on by the program) and that’s it (outside of a 1 credit class first semester) but many programs have a service requirement. I would recommend it over honors as it’s only available to incoming freshman and it’s much more of a community since you all live with each other and go to events together. I’ve made a lot of my friends through the program and also had many more opportunities available to me.
^Very helpful. Thanks!
@GAcollegemom6 She ranked her top 3 choices on 2/15, and got her placement offer on 3/29 via email.
Thank you @mom1girl
@israelifun Do you recommend International Affairs Scholars?
@schoolistoohard Yeah it’s a pretty good program, I’d pick either IA or PSL if I had done it again. Both are Smith-Steeb which is an incredibly res hall and both have plenty of good opportunities. IA seems to get a lot more kids from other programs while PSL seems to be much more poli sci oriented. Either way you can’t really go wrong.
Just heard back from scholars… got into business scholars my top choice :))))
Same here… top choice, Business Scholars!
@israelifun : Hi, my son got decision today and got into STEM Exploration and Engagement Scholars Program. I don’t know too much about scholars program, my son’s intended major is Computer Science, so my question is, will this scholar program conflict with his CS major, or distract him from learning those CS classes? what about this STEM Exploration and Engagement Scholars Program, is it good? Thanks very much for answering.
@lab99 From what I know talking to other people It shouldn’t interfere at all… it’s not a academic environment, it’s more of a living and community environment.
Hi guys I just got accepted into the International affairs scholars- top choice. Does anyone know how much it improves the experience
My D got into Mount Society Scholars… her first choice was actually Business Scholars so she is wondering if Mount is a good alternative. It seems very service oriented which she does like, but she felt that Business would be more supportive of her major. Does anyone have any input on the Mount program?
Just received the email–got into Health Sciences Scholars (first choice). Does anybody know if this can help lead to research opportunities?
S was accepted to STEM Exploration and Engagement Scholars. I like the guaranteed housing component in Houston Hall - looks like a brand new dorm.
@pop424 - my D is a Mountie. AWESOME program, and a great experience! The good thing about Mount is that it caters to all majors. And yes, very service oriented.
My D just got into the Humanities Scholars program, but will be a chemistry major. She did list Humanities as an interest, but this was not her top choice. Does it make any sense to be in the program or is she better off housing in a learning community focused on science? I am aware that the scholars notation on her degree would look good.
My D was accepted to the Mount Leadership Scholars (her first choice). She is thrilled. If anyone in MLS wants to start getting to know one another ahead of time, I can send you her info. Maybe you all can create a group me for Mounties?
@STEM2017 my son also got into the STEM scholar program, good to hear our sons will be living in a new residence hall.
I didn’t get my first choice, so now I am a computer science major in the Green Engineering Scholars program. I really wanted to be in STEM. How does it work if my program doesn’t relate to my major? Is it just a waste of time? Also, GES is a two-year program but STEM would have been four years. How does this affect my experience? Do I lose the scholars benefits after two years?
