Ohio State University vs University of Pittsburgh

Which one is better academically for someone with a pre-med designation? I've visited both schools, and the atmosphere is about even. Basically, what I'm asking is whether the USNWR Undergraduate ranking is more important for pre-med, or if USNWR Medical School ranking is more important. From the standpoint of a medical school admissions committee, I mean.

I don’t think a medical school admissions committee would see a dime’s worth of difference between these schools at the undergrad level. They’ll look at GPA and MCAT scores and that’s about it.

^ Agree with bclintonk.

Both middle of the road state universities. You could get a great education at either. Just like you could get a great education at most universities-including ivies. It’s all up to the student. Going to a highly ranked school won’t make you smarter.

I’ve never been to Ohio State. However, Pitt is surrounded by many hospitals and medical research facilities, most of which are directly affiliated with the university. There may be more opportunities outside of the classroom at Pitt concerning health care, such as internship and summer job opportunities.

"I don’t think a medical school admissions committee would see a dime’s worth of difference between these schools at the undergrad level. They’ll look at GPA and MCAT scores and that’s about it. "

Agreed!! :)

When it comes to Medical Center’s reputation amongst the medical community, UPMC is ahead of OSUMC overall imho. However, when it comes to Cancer treatment, OSUMC’s James Hospital is a Top-3 specialty hospital in the nation. In addition, OSUMC is currently undergoing a $1.2 billion medical center expansion (Project One). Once completed, Ohio State should have a Top-10 University affiliated teaching hospital on campus. Last but not least, the school has just officially kicked-off its $2.5 billion+ fundrising campaign this month along with numerous top-notch, state-of-the-art facilities that had recently opened on campus. Hence, I’d say…Go Bucks!! :)

**TOSU has been annually ranked as one of the top “Up-and-Coming” schools on USNWR since President Gee’s return from Vanderbilt. Applications up roughly 30% last year followed by another 20% increase this year!! :)

Those are not “middle of the road” anything. Both are excellent universities. I would give the edge to OSU because it is currently “on the move”. Besides, its athletic programs are currently the envy of the Big 10, which is saying a lot coming from a Wolverine!

Alex, the Big 10 is overrated and is doing horribly in football.

Time to give over yourselves bevo 10.

Big 10 overrated in football eh? LOL! It between the 2nd-4th strongest football conference (not as strong as the SEC but certainly on par with the Big XII and the Pac 10). With the addition of Nebraska and the inevitable return of Michigan, I would confidently say that the Big 10 will be the best football conference in the nation. The Big 10 is already the wealthiest conference, makes the most money and has the highest attendence per game. It is also home to 4 of the 10 most storied football programs in the nation.

Either is a solid choice. OSU is a Top 10 research university and Pitt is in the Top 20 by total funding. BTW 3 of the Top 10 are Big Ten schools. None is an SEC school.

It’s only wealthy because it’s the BCS’s little pet project.

How did the Bevo 10 fair in the bowl games this year? That’s what I thought…

The B10 also follows the spirit of recruiting rules rather than running off 10 recruits every year to make more room under the 85 cap. The SEC is the cesspool of college sports.

I’d say go with Pitt it’s very good with pre professions and science related majors.

“The B10 also follows the spirit of recruiting rules rather than running off 10 recruits every year to make more room under the 85 cap. The SEC is the cesspool of college sports.”

This is so true barrons and one of my biggest complaints about the NCAA in general and the SEC in particular. Not only does it totally give an unfair althletic advantage to schools that do it, but it also undermines the importance of becoming a student athlete in the first place. Shame on those who let these nefarious practices to continue.

Are you instate for either school?

Go to the school that will cost you less money so you’ll have more money for med school.

They’re going to be viewed as “peer schools” by med schools.

Once you get past the top 10-20 schools…the rest are viewed the same except once you get down to unknown schools.

“Once you get past the top 10-20 schools…the rest are viewed the same except once you get down to unknown schools.”

I think you’ve made a bit of an overstatement with that remark mom.

Mom makes a good point.

Anyone who denies that is just fooling themselves.

Any of the top 100-150 schools are great. Go beyond that and you will still find great schools.

rjk…

seriously…

Med schools aren’t going to distinguish between a school that is ranked like #30 and one that is ranked #80. think about it, those rankings are only 40% based on academics…the rest of the rankings are based on irrelevant things like alumni giving and such…not things that have to do with how qualified a student is.

Med schools care about GPA, MCAT, and ECs (usually medically related).

^^^That wasn’t your original statement.

My original statement…

*“Once you get past the top 10-20 schools…the rest are viewed the same except once you get down to unknown schools.”
*

And, I stand by it. What’s your beef?

Once you’re past the top elites, no one cares…until maybe the unknown schools.
