Daughter needs to choose between Bioengineering at U of Toledo and Bio-Medical Engineering at Ohio State. Here are the basic facts.

Out of State for both schools.
Good student based on hard work, 27 ACT (32 math, 26 science)
Pre-Med.
Ohio State will cost about $8000 per year more.
Ohio State undergraduate bio-medical engineering program is new - 1st sophmore class this year. She has always wanted to go to OSU. OSU has big classes for first year math, chem, physics. Small classes 2nd - 4th years. She loves the school. Will live with friend, business major, at OSU.

U of Toledo honors program. Established 5 year bio-engineering co-op program. Small classes for honor program. First year math, chem, physics less that 15 per class with prof. teaching all classes. She thinks school is OK. Will meet roomate at school.

Which school will provide better prep for med school?
Which school will give best chance for good grades and MCAT?
Is OSU reputation worth extra cost?

OSU by a mile.

I live in Ohio, and, at least where i go to school and live, Toledo is basically the school that kids who can’t get into any other schools go to. It is just not nearly as highly respected as OSU. OSU’s reputation is far better than Toledo’s and will open up so many more doors, not to mention the fact that OSU has a highly ranked engineering program.

Ohio State used to be a party school, but it is quickly becoming an excellent university. It is big, but there are many ways to shrink a school like that (sports, clubs, greek life, etc). Additionally, Columbus > Toledo… By a landslide

At OSU you will get better research opportunities, a better city, better sports and student life, better academics, and significantly better prestige. I can’t see any reason to pass that up. (not even 32,000)

I don’t know much about medical admissions, but I really think that Toledo will limit your options for medical school. It’s just not a highly respected university. OSU should be fine for getting you into med school, it just might take time to get used to a school that big.

I agree with mvmanno, Ohio State is worth the extra money in this case, Ohio State doesn’t really even compare with Toledo.

Just curious, aren’t there any good state schools where you are from? Personally, I wouldn’t pay OOS fees for any public schools in Ohio.

I agree with rjkofnovi, Ohio publics leave much to be desired.

Strong family roots in ohio. All 6 in our family born in ohio. Mom and dad went to OSU.

well Ohio public schools are actually quite good, Ohio has several ok to great public schools including Miami University, Ohio State, Ohio University and University Of Cincinnati

Yeah, if you have your heart set on Ohio, I would recommend OSU, Miami, or Case.

Of those three, I think OSU is the best overall choice. The only thing holding OSU back I think is its size which I find deters many students who fear an impersonal “sink-or-swim” environment.
