Ohio U Mechanical Engineering

Hey just registered on the site and had a question or two. First off I'll start by saying I wasn't the greatest student in high school. I went to a real crappy middle school before my parents took me out after a few kids were killed and I was thrown into a prep school. My grades sucked but slowly increased every year. I was a D average student my freshman year but managed to work it up to about a 3.0 by the time i graduated :/ I was always a lazy student but could easily get good grades when I worked for it. Problem is I'd rather sit around and play CoD and what not which is why I'm not bringing my PS3. I got into Auburn and Bama as well if that counts for anything.

My dad made a deal with me that if I get a 3.25 my first semester/any semester that he'll give me a significant amount of money. I was just wondering how hard that is to achieve and what good habits should I get into early on besides the obvious studying, going to class, etc. I understand that OU is seen as the party school but that's not at all why I'm going their.

Also from any other ME majors or engineering in general, what should I be expecting? I start school in 10 days so is there anything course wise that I should do to prep?

Help is appreciated and thanks in advance

First off, don’t do it for the money, do it for yourself. It seems like you have potential to do well but you just need motivation. That said, a 3.25 is doable but you should definitely aim as high as you can, possibly 4.0?

Most engineering curriculum is the same for the first two years. You’ll take your basic calc/chem/physics courses and maybe a few gen eds. This doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be easy. I can’t say for OU, but at some (most?) universities these are weed out classes, meaning they’re tougher than they have to be (unfortunately). It’s very easy to get lazy, fall behind, and not do well from the get go.

I don’t really know if there’s much you can do right now. You should plan ahead and study accordingly for your classes, get to know someone in your classes, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

You should enjoy yourself too, now while you can. Any engineering major just gets harder the further along you get.

Your Pops is wrong for bribing you money just to do well. You should want to do well out of your own will. I honestly don’t think you will go to far in college.

Wow well this looks is bad. Believe me I want to shoot as high as I can gpa wise and trust me I’m not just doing it for the money. I’m also going to be in AFROTC waking up and working out 3 days a week at 6:30 in the morning. I would love to do way better but I was just throwing a number out their. Thanks to the ******* that said I won’t make it far btw. Just more incentive to do even better.

I have more motivation to do well in college aside from a $800 a semester considering I’ve been working 40 hour a week summers since I was 14 making enough to pay for my first year and half in straight cash almost.
