I know some schools state that things out of the student's control, such as the teacher recs, can arrive after the application deadline. Does anyone know whether Duke has this same policy? I can't find anything about this on the website and the admissions office, while saying it's open till 4:00 today, just has a recording. My daughter's second teacher still has not submitted the rec. and has not responded to emails.

This is usually decided on a case-by-case basis, so you should probably call on monday and ask.

Personally I don’t think it matters all that much, I mean, if they can wait for the January SAT scores to complete some applicants’ files, I don’t see why they can’t wait for a delayed rec.

But then again, I don’t make the decisions so all I can say is best of luck.

SBR, do you mean a student-by-student basis or school-by-school?

Since you were specifically asking about Duke my answer is geared toward Duke. So it’s student-by-student.

Their website said their checklist for viewing what you don’t have in your file won’t be online until January 26 or so. I took this to mean that you have plenty of time to get anything in, and they will notify you around the end of January if your file is missing anything.

crazyday, I think you’re right. I have yet to see a school that specifically says that non-receipt of recommendations, transcripts, or scores by the deadline will disqualify one’s application. But it’s good to know about the Jan. 26 date for Duke. Thanks!

I also had a question about this. I decided today to apply to Duke (I know that’s really late). IF I turn in all the application stuff tonight and get all my teacher and counselor stuff sent first thing Monday, do you think they will care?

If the common app, supplement, and payment were submitted by midnight on the due date, then having the other components arrive a bit later seems to be okay – see the comment above about getting everything there by Jan. 26th, a date that was apparently somewhere on Duke’s website.
