What about late teacher recs?

My daughter is applying to selective schools such as Ivies, Georgetown and U.Va., which have Jan. 1 deadlines. We live in a small town in Georgia in which nearly all the students aspire to public in-state schools. Those schools have later deadlines and minimal application requirements, and teachers here aren't accustomed to doing the types of recommendations that my D requested. The counselor got her recommendation and the transcripts in before Jan. 1, but both of her teacher recs were sent during the first week of January. Do you think this will cause any problem? Should D feel compelled to e-mail or write Admissions Offices to explain the reason for the lateness?

no, it is okay. the january first deadline mainly represents the deadline for the stuff that she is personally responsible for - essays, supplements, etc. they understand that counselor/teacher stuff will trickle in and they will not penalize her for that.

she should get some kind of letter around early february that states what admission materials the college has and has not received....if the teacher recs are still not in, then that is when you should worry. but she should be fine if they are already mailed.

Don't worry! Especially for the large and competitive schools you listed, materials aren't even sorted through for several weeks. If they have already been sent, there is no issue at all.

Also, you should never be hesitant to call an admission office if you are worried.

Thanks....
