If I hypothetically get into Penn (which I probably won’t lol), when I announce on facebook to my friends and family that I got in, should I say UPenn class of 2022, or University of Pennsylvania Class of 2022? Like if I get into Penn, I don’t want people to think I got into a state school but an Ivy ranked higher than Brown, Cornell, and Dartmouth instead. Sorry this sounds so arrogant lol, but just curious what y’all think.
Some people seem to confuse Penn with Penn State no matter what you call it. If you were really worried you could add something about being excited to be a Quaker or whatever.
Maybe something to consider when decisions are out, though, instead of before.
Haha, EVERYONE probably thinks this so don’t worry about arrogance… I would say either works cause the “U” in UPenn sets it apart from Penn State and your latter option is self-explanatory. Personally, I would use the second choice so there’s no chance for confusion. BEST OF LUCK AND HOPE WE ALL GET TO POST THIS!!
@bodangles Lol, after I get in, I’m gonna post, take the rest of the week off, and binge watch Netflix.
@Burrito12 if you go to a reasonably sophisticated high school and move in similarly educated and sophisticated circles, rest assured that your classmates and acquaintances will now what Penn is and that it is not Penn State.
The people who confuse the two tend to be those who are not highly educated and familiar with elite higher ed. These people usually can’t name a single ivy past Harvard and Yale (maybe Princeton too), and will not know that Penn (or UPenn) ranked higher or lower this or that ivy.
Btw all ivy and elite school grads and people who are really in-the-know, say Penn never UPenn. UPenn is only used when talking to people unfamiliar with these things so that you can distinguish it from Penn State which is known amongst the lay public because of college football.
Finally no, this is not arrogant, it is perfectly natural to want wide recognition for your years and years of hard work that enabled you to get into Penn (hopefully, good luck!!). Unfortunately, for the non-HYPSM elite schools this kind of recognition is very unusual when it comes to the lay public.
Reconsider posting now. It just makes those who didn’t get into their ED schools feel bad. Wait until the end of April when everyone is saying where they are going and post then.
Agree with @intparent. If you are fortunate enough to be accepted ED, share the happiness with your family via email. Save the public postings (Facebook, Twitter, et al) until spring.
@Burrito12, Penn as articulated by Penn95. If one is interested in elite schools, s/he knows Penn. Hopefully, you would be fortunately admitted to Penn M&T. Calm down, one more day. GL
As pointed out, people in the know, know that Penn means The University of Pennsylvania, so Penn should suffice. What do you care where the rest of the uneducated schmucks think you were admitted anyway, you may as well say you got into Penn Community College, they don’t know, nor care, about the academic selectivity of your college choice. Does this sort of thing normally keep you awake at night? Because you understand, that for those in the know, to them, the fact that you are actually thinking about this sort of thing really is a reflection of your class. Pomposity sometimes knows no bounds.
This is easy - if you get in, just say “Accepted at the University of Pennsylvania! Excited to go to the Ivy League this fall!”
As you want recognition for your accomplishments, just mention the ivy league - everyone knows this is synonymous with status, because Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are in it. (And many think Stanford and Duke and Notre Dame and Berkeley are in it too.)
8-| “Excited to go to the Ivy League this fall!” That is arrogant. Don’t be that guy.
@intparent he already IS that guy.
@intparent - I agree with @labegg - the OP IS that guy. The question is just how to convey this.
I wanna be that guy too! I am completely serious. If I get accepted to Penn, I would be the first person in my entire family ever to go to an Ivy League school. And there’s no shame in being proud of it, well at least not to me. It’s such a hard (approaching impossible) college to get into. And it’s costly. And most people I know and love actually would think I meant Penn State…
When you’re someone this arrogant, it’s embarrassing and no one really cares
This is the kind of thing I think about fleetingly, and then reprimand myself because it seems far too elitist and arrogant to be even entertained seriously. In any case, like others here have already said, the people who would care would know that Penn is an Ivy League, and any other misconceptions are an inevitable and harmless side-effect of applying to Penn. I agree that there’s a strong sense of pride in being a top student and applying to an Ivy League school and you shouldn’t stifle it, but openly discussing how terrible you think it would be for people to think you’re going to Penn state instead of UPenn is a bit incredible to me lol. Kinda reinforces the stereotype of kids applying to Ivies just for the prestige.
You can have your parent make the big boast on FB about the Ivy league, and tag you in the post. That way it gets announced to your connections, but not by you.
You already come across as very pretentious and arrogant so I’m sure your spelling of the university to impress your friends should be the least of your concerns.
Well, did you get in?
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Closing thread; not much left to say, plus, at this point, it’s moot.
