Okay, this is a really important question about stamps.

Unfortunately, my school is stuck in the 90s and forces us to send in our letters of recommendations through the mail. It's absolutely awful - especially considering that I have not sent anything through the mail since ~2003. But anyway, I recently gave my teachers and guidance counselor my envelopes and did not think much of it. A couple weeks later, one of my teachers told me that I put the stamps on the envelopes upside down (I put the stamps on at 2 AM, keep in mind). As you can imagine, I find this pretty embarrassing. (And I am applying to pretty selective universities too!) So I went to go give my recommenders new envelopes, but they had already sent them in! And now I'm sitting here wondering if the admissions committees are just automatically going to reject my application because I'm some stupid fool who can't even put stamps on the correct way etc. etc.

Funny thing is, I googled "upside-down stamps" and apparently it means "I love you."

Of course, I do love those colleges but... well, you get the idea.
It's seriously stressing me out!

So my question to you is: Will I automatically be rejected? (Be honest.) Do the admissions committees even see these envelopes? I've heard that most schools have office workers open the envelopes and scan the letters into the computer for review by admissions - is this true?

My stress level is so high. And if I don't get into one of my schools, I will never know if it was because of the stamps or because of my application! :(

I feel like an absolute idiot.

I’m going to assume that this is not a serious post

It depends; how brightly coloured were the stamps? I have heard of case of this happening before, but only those whose stamps were bright red or orange were rejected due to the noticeable nature of such stamps.

I’m cracking up over your post because the college counselors at my senior’s school told the parents we should thank them for teaching our kids how to address and stamp an envelope!

No worries…you are correct in assuming clerical staff will handle all of that paper stuff. And so what if an admission officer saw your upside down stamps?! I’m pretty sure they’ve seen it all, including upside down stamps. In fact, they probably know the “I love you” lore and suspect that some kids do it intentionally just to have a little fun with “showing the love.”

Good luck with your apps!

It also might depend on when you bought the stamp. After they jacked up the price to 44 cents a pop, colleges have been ruthless with stamp placement etiquette.

If you bought the stamps when they cost 43 cents or less then you should be alright.

If there was no price listed on the stamp… god help you.

hahah, alright alright. thanks guys.
