Okay to take science classes at CC?

Hi everyone!

This is my senior year at UCLA, and after a lot of decision making, I've decided that I wanted to go pre-med (I'm north-campus). I know I can't take all the science classes needed before I reach the unit cap maximum. So, I was hoping to take as many as I can, and possibly stay another year here, before graduating. Is it possible for me to do this, without the school kicking me out or not giving me financial aid? Also, since I can't take all the classes here, would it be advisable that I take the rest of the required classes at a community college?

Thanks. :D

I don’t think the school will kick you out until you hit the unit cap. How many more units would you have left after you finish your current major?

There’s also post-bacc programs.

I have about 40 free units or so. I was hoping to get some chemistry and life science classes out of the way. I know they’re not easy classes, but if I take them at the same time, they’re manageable, right? Any advice for a terrified north campus student? :D

I actually know someone who is doing something like you are doing, except she decided that she wanted to go to dental school. She also completely finished her degree before her decision and I think she went over her unit cap, too. Regardless, she is a fifth year now and she’s IP of taking all the classes she needs for dental school. I’d suggest talking to your counselor.

Oh, and then they didn’t let her walk even though she finished her degree, fyi.

Make sure that you are sure that you are going pre-med and stay motivated so you do well in all the classes especially if you’re (or at least attempting to) taking them all within a year.

Thanks so much, transpublic. Now, I feel less alone and not so lame.

Why didn’t they let her walk? That’s pretty messed up. Anyways, I don’t plan on taking all my requirements here, just a nice chunk of it. Best of luck to your friend!

I believe after a certain number of units at UCLA, you can’t take CC classes for credit anymore (has to be at a 4 year college/university)

@ arklogic, gettin credit at CC won’t matter in regards to being premed. When he applies to med school, his CC pre-reqs would still be accepted
