I want to get into the med school, but damn the maximum unit limit! I can't take all the required classes I need to apply before I hit the 216 limit. Can I take all the classes I'd need for my B.A., and defer graduaton at UCLA, so I can complete all those required classes? Or would they just laugh at me and shoo me away? :/

you have to be under the unit limit when you graduate.

how are you up on the unit limit already? what major/year are you?

**** im concerned bout this..im only a rising sophmore but i already have nearly 100 units!

Yeah, someone clear this up, I've heard a lot of diff things about this too, and I'm not sure what to believe.

I just transferred, actually, as an Anthropology major.

I calculate that after fulfilling the requirements for my B.A., I'd have taken about 174 units (since I need 60 upper division units). If I'm doing my math correctly, I don't think I can fit in all the science and math classes (one year Physics, one year Chemistry, one year math, etc) before I reach 216 units.

Am I thinking about this correctly? Or did I confuse myself along the way? :/

As long as you finish in 4 years (plus the summer after your 4th year), you can use as many units as you please. You say you would have to defer - how many more quarters would you need? Could you finish in summers and the summer after your 4th year? UCLA only cares if you go over the unit limit AND go beyond your 4th year. Then they'll start pestering you, but you can still apply for a unit cap waiver.

AP units do not count against the unit max.

So if you take more than 216 units will they force you to graduate? what if you are getting a minor or a double major?

I'm not sure about double majoring, but I think getting your minor shouldn't be too much of a problem, depending on the subject. Most minors are only about eight classes, right?

Can't you just petition to stay longer? I know engineers do this all the time, but engineers have perks.

What I heard about petitioning is that they, whoever they are, basically what to know that you have a plan and just need to finish up a few things before you finish your degree, and that you didn't **** up an STILL have to take 1023912098310283 more classes.

I suppose I can try petitioning, when the time rolls around. Thanks :D

I'm having second thoughts on med school. Is it really worth it? I'd love to continue studying anthro, but I don't know. I hope the grad program for that at UCLA isn't too competitive.

Haha. Med school is worth it if you're sure you want to be a doctor. It and all the prereqs are actually a few of the reasons I don't plan to pursue that career.

Yeah, depends on if you want to be a Doc or not. LOL. What subfield of anthro!? I love anthro! I do not like archaeology much though, but I've never been in field, so I can't say for sure.

Haha, I think Archaeology is too competitive. And I'm not too interested in pot shards. I like biological anthro (especially primates) and cultural anthro's pretty interesting, as well.

UCLA's summer archaeology program looks pretty badass!

Have you ever thought of doing the Anthro B.S. degree instead of the B.A.? That's what I'm doing, and it's great because all the pre-med requirements are built into the Anthro B.S., and you don't have to take as many upper-division classes for it, which will be better for your unit cap. You should check it out! Anthro at UCLA is great, hehe.

I was thinking of getting the B.S., but then again, the unit limit plays a role. That is, if my calculations are correct. I should ask my advisor for help...

The Anthro B.S. at LA is badass. Does any other school offer an anthro program with that many south campus courses in it?

Wow, that's cool. I didn't know there were even majors that have a B.S./ B.A. option. Now I want to take the anthro fiat lux on food and identity :P

Any thoughts of the anthro B.A.?

A lot easier than anthro B.S.

^Yup. More upper divs though, I think.
