Old Dorms Advice?

I am an incoming First Year, and was assigned to one of the McCormick Road dorms. I am really struggling with the prospect of shopping for storage and decor as UVA does not provide any measurements or information regarding the furniture already in the room. I would really appreciate any advice from upperclassmen who have lived in old dorms about maximizing storage space, the types of products that would be most useful to buy, and any layout tips you may have!

Something specific that I am wondering about is the possibility of putting a headboard/shelf bed cubby behind the bed against the window wall–is that possible with the odd shape of the corner, and can the beds be moved?

Thank you so much!

The ceilings are tall. There is room for one tall strong storage unit that you can share with your roommate. Buy one that you can assemble in the room because there are no elevators. You can order stuff online from a chain store, and it will be ready for you to pick up at the Cville store on move-in day.

(The old dorms are being renovated in phases over the next few years but that won’t help the incoming class).

Then, be thankful that you can roll out of bed and be in most classes within 8 minutes.
