Is there a way that someone like me (who has not been on this forum for years and years) can access threads and topics from, say, three to four years ago or longer?
Once in awhile, people reference discussions that took place back then, and I have repeatedly tried to search for these ... sometimes searching the username, sometimes trying relevant words. No dice. It doesn't work.
I am guessing that these threads or discussions have been deleted or are archived somewhere.
If so, can people access them?
Inquiring minds want to know ...

Go to the "IMPORTANT: FAQ link" just above the last current post and follow the link to the FAQ page. Click on "The Thread" and then click on one of the parts. Then you can use the search function from that old format. I'll have to warn you that it was more than slightly scattershot and the discussion consisted of extremely long single threads, so it is kind of hard to do a pointed search. You may as well just read the whole thing.

Wow. I just looked at the first post and it was by Cathy Brant on April 5, 2002! Most of them peeps done gradumicated by now! ;)

I don't know how far back it goes, but if you click on the FAQ at the top of the page- and then click on the FAQ that comes up on THAT page- over on the left is a menu that goes back to the archives.

Whoops- great minds think alike!

fishbowlfreshman, how are you? We've missed you round these parts. Please post more often. Parents of kids who are now rising seniors will especially want the benefit of your opinion as they slide into gear for auditions in the fall. Love to have an update about how your year went, what you are doing and so on, and know I am not the only one.

Aw thanks NMR. I thought I was more of an annoyance around these parts! :) I'll try to pop in and help out when I can but the whole college/conservatory audition thing now seems so far in the past that I'm not so sure how much help I can really be. Overall, the year went swimmingly although the big fishies would occasionally nip my tail causing me to dart about the tank a bit ... but it always grew back stronger. Just part of the process. This summer I'm staying close to home and working an old haunt where a good friend of mine from h/s will be playing Celia to my Rosalind. Should be a blast! Other than that, it's just the normal table waiting except this time I got my applications in soon enough to come up with a somewhat slightly classier gig than last year's "All American Cheerleader/Surfer Girl Next Door" experience ... LOL

Fishbowl, nice to hear an update. You are a very valuable participant and contributer to this forum and have lots to share from your own experiences. I hope to see you pop in more in the future when you have time. Break a leg playing Rosalind and also charming diners for tips!

Using the button for "discussion classic" at the bottom of this page, I found Parts 1-14 of the musical theater major discussion threads, which take me through April 2004, approx. But I am at a dead end there. At the end of that thread (Part 14), it says something such as "discussion on this topic disabled." How can I access parts 14 and on up? Yes, I am crazy, but reading from the beginning is very instructive. If anyone can assist me, please PM me with specific instructions. I am pretty good with computers and such, but am sometimes more blonde than I ought to be about navigating CC in particular. Thanks so much! :)

I don't know about using "classic" function, but here are links to all 38 parts in the old format ... http://www.geocities.com/musicaltheatercolleges/thread.html

NMR...I don't have any button called "discussion classic" on my window. But like Fishbowl says, you can access every part of the original MT threads (they were one very very very long thread in PARTS originally and not its own forum with topic threads), by going ot the FAQ link and accessing links to all the parts of the original threads on MT Colleges.

Also, once you get ONTO the old forums through those links to the PARTS threads, you can search those archival forums.

By the way, that page only lists links to Parts 1-38 and the LONG thread actually now has 40 PARTS. But you can get to parts 39 and 40 by directions within the threads of how to go where the discussion is continued.

Soozie, if you scroll down to the very, very bottom of this page, you will see (in white writing on a grey bar) stuff that says: "Contact Us: and "College Confidential Home" and "College Discussion Classic," among other things. You can actually click on those and it links you to lists of old archived discussions. Thanks to fishbowl for the link to all discussions. Very interesting reading!

NMR>>>>thanks for pointing out a button on CC that I did not see before considering I have been on CC for five years, LOL! However, I clicked on that link and all I got was jibberish. This may be due to the server I am using and it doesn't work on this server. I am also on a Mac though I am not sure that is related. Right now, I am on CC using Safari. So, that link doesn't work for me. However, the old MT threads can be accessed in the FAQ area.

Thanks, everyone. Thanks to fishbowl's link, I read all the way through to -- what was it? Part 38, I think -- but for the life of me, I cannot then find how to go to Part 39 and on, until the discussions became split into specific areas. Can anyone point me to those? It's been fascinating to follow different people's kids' journeys through the college selection process, auditions, and so on. (Susan, it's been especially fun to watch as you went from being a newbie to an expert! :) and to read about your D's amazing success as it happened. I want more! ;)) If anyone can tell me how to do that, it would be great. You can simply PM or email me, or just post here. But I want the rest of the story ...... wah!

I'm gooooood ... :D

Colleges for Musical Theater - Part 39

College for Musical Theater - Part 40

Weird how the beginning date on Part 40 is earlier than Part 39. Go figure ...

Tonys time! Yay!

I haven't been there in awhile, but in the old days when the thread was one long running discussion, and I spent months trying to go through all the old stuff, I could usually go to the beginning of a tread and find a link to the previous thread. Same with the ending of a thread - I think a link to take you to the next one.

Good luck!
