Hi, I am a Californian who is considering going to Ole Miss because of their great aid packages and fun environment. I have only ever lived on the West and East Coast so I’m a little worried about making such a big move to a totally new environment. I am conservative and Christian so I think I’ll be pretty similar to the student body there, but I’m still concerned about fitting in down there. Is it a culture shock to go to Ole Miss? Do Californians (or OOS kids in general) typically adapt pretty well? Thanks!
My son is a Midwesterner and headed there in the fall, due to the great OoS scholarships. He fell in love with it when he visited a second time over Spring Break. We are conservative (he leans more to the middle) Catholics so he was actually inquisitive and received a lot of great feedback. We will be participating in our city’s Ole Miss family picnic at the end of June. There are about 40 kids or so that attend from the Kansas City area. I may have more feedback after that time but everyone I have talked to says it’s a warm and welcome experience! Any chance you could visit?
Thanks for the input! I’ll be visiting this summer to get a better feel for it. Good luck to your son!
Ole Miss is gorgeous as is the town in which its located. Its kind off in the middle of nowhere. Its very Greek. Yes It will be different coming from California. It will be yes ma’am and yes sir. It will be preppy dress. If you are fine with all that you should not have any problem. Kids who go there tend to like it.
It will be a culture shock but I don’t think in a bad way. The campus is beautiful and there are enough groups of students for you to find friends with similar interests as yours. My daughter is probably left of liberal but has enjoyed her years at Ole Miss. The OOS scholarship was the selling point and she is reaping the benefits of their special academic programs. If you have an open mind, you’ll do just fine.
