I am currently a senior in high school and i am looking to attend ole miss in the fall. However, because it is out of state i will not have a lot of spare change hanging around and i was wondering how much more it costs to be in a fraternity rather than just attending there? Also, i've heard the social scene is largely greek and that not being in a greek organization makes you somewhat of an outcast. Is this true?

Check out the Ole Miss Interfraternity Council website for more details. The quick answer is that fraternity costs for houses serving meals (M-F, 3 meals per day) are about $350-450 per month, plus about $150 in initiation fees. The site notes that housing costs are similar between fraternity housing and on-campus housing. The Office of Greek Life can be reached by phone for more specific questions.

I don’t know about Ol Miss, but the costs of an average fraternity are often offset by cheaper food and cheaper housing, plus money you save on activities. Remember if you rent a private apt., you will have a year long lease, you may have to furnish it, and may be charged extra for utilities.

I have a few questions. How many months must members pay for, 8? And are you served meals as a pledge in the fall after bid day? Finally, how much extra does it typically cost to live in the house?

The majority of Ole Miss fraternity members don’t live in the house. They have some gigantic chapters, and the houses are largely gathering places where only a segment of the population lives.

If I were going to Ole Miss, I would certainly at least try rushing in order to meet people. However, be aware that many houses do most of their recruiting over the summer. If you are in Houston, Memphis, or another out-of-state city that sends a lot of students to Ole Miss, there may be local events you can attend.
