Ole Miss it is!

So after all of my angst about my S getting into UNH, UConn etc...we go to visit Ole Miss (just started a club hockey team, looking for players) and he LOVES it! He was having tons of anxiety about which school to attend as he surprised himeslf and got into most that he applied to. Then he went to Ole Miss for a visit and it was all over. Spouse and I were very impressed with the school as well. A big bonus is that it costs HALF of what oos NE schools would have cost. S is basically "undecided" for a major so I really don't mind investing less at this point. S was very relieved when we got home and seems excited about the prospect of Ole Miss. It's funny how the stars align sometimes...Thanks for listening to my angst through these posts. I appreciate the good advice/suggestions that I always got from others. I wish everyone the best...

Congrats to your family, momrules. Best of luck to your S at Ole Miss.

talk to mantori suzuki!

Congratulations! I would be hard pressed to name another school whose graduates love it as much as alumni love Ole Miss.

Congratulations! Isn’t it wonderful when it all works out so well??? So glad your S found his match!

Cool! My son’s going there, too, as Pizzagirl indicated. Feel free to PM me with any questions…not that I know more than anyone else at this point, but I’m glad to help if I can. Good luck!

^^Oh wow I must have missed the post where your son decided^^ My 3rd son is interested in Ole Miss which shocked the heck out of me after two sons that had under 2500 and within a half hour of skiing as must have criteria. All the best to the OP’s son and to Manori Suzuki son!!

Congrats! I’ve heard great things about it too!

I’m glad to see people on CC looking into Ole Miss and choosing it for their college careers. Congratulations to both of your sons.

Congrats! I know he’ll love Ole Miss. I wish I could talk DS#2 into looking at it - but no luck so far!

That is so true!

When you receive acceptance from Ole Miss do you also find out if you were accepted to special programs such as the honors college, Croft school of international affairs and flagship Chinese program at the same time? How early can you apply and find out? When do you find out about financial/merit aid? I have a rising junior who will be interested in these programs.

Congrats to the Ole Miss matriculants!

Congratulations!!
Good for your son to look at a newly presented option and running with it! I hope he has a great college experience!

You can apply anytime, as they have rolling admissions. My son was admitted to the university last year.

Special programs (Honors, Croft, Chinese Flagship) have separate applications, deadlines, and notification dates. Conveniently, they are all handled on the same online system, which is well-designed to make it easy to apply to everything at once, or one at a time over an extended period, as you wish. They even contact your references for you electronically. We did nothing on paper. I wish every school would model their application process on Ole Miss’s. Here’s the link:

<a href=“SAP NetWeaver Portal”>SAP NetWeaver Portal;

The general scholarship application is part of the online system as well. For the most part, the application for admission also serves as the application for general scholarships, but there is a list of special scholarships you can apply for if you meet certain criteria. You check off all the boxes that apply to you, click “send”, and you’re on your way.

You are automatically considered for program-specific scholarships when you apply to each program. We found out about general scholarships in January (or maybe even before), but didn’t get notification about Honors or Chinese Flagship admissions and scholarships until a month or two later. The Residential College didn’t even notify my son that he was admitted until about a week ago, more than three months after he applied.

But again, even though the admission and scholarship decisions were spaced out over an extended time period, we submitted all of the applications at the same time, on the same website, so it really was painless. Anytime we had questions, we called the appropriate office, and always reached a human being who was friendly and helpful. (That’s partly what sold this dad on Ole Miss.)

I believe you can apply for admission to the university immediately after your junior year of high school. No hurry, though; with an acceptance rate of over 80%, there’s not much chance of losing your spot to someone else! Just pay close attention to the deadlines for the individual programs, which are more competitive.

I hope this answered some of your questions. I PM’d you as well.

Agreed. They have a very comprehensive application process and webpage for newly admitted students. My S received a lengthy, handwritten letter from an assistant dean with information on selecting a major and other issues. HANDWRITTEN in cursive no less! I can only imagine this poor woman’s hand after hundreds of these??? Of course this doesn’t mean the Miss is better or worse than other schools but it certainly impressed me!

That sounds, great to me! We’ll visit next year when my daughter is a junior. If she likes the programs and can handle the size of the campus, I think we will be very fortunate to have such a good opportunity for her that we can afford. Congratulations to you all. I hope your children settle in well in the fall and find it a good match for their interests and talents.

mantori: Ole Miss is the one? I must have missed it… Congrats to all who chose Ole Miss! My Ds have never looked back!

Oh, yes! Sorry I didn’t make that clearer. We’re all very happy with the decision, even my son, who just a few months ago stated flatly, “I am not going to college in Mississippi.” About two hours into the visit I forced him to make, he said, “Dad, I think this is where I’m going to college.” It was a red-letter day.

I believe I heard those exact words mantori! It’s really an amazing event to behold when you see that they have found their home. Momrules…if I can be of any assistance with any questions that arise, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Congrats!
